July 29, 20213 yr Now there's some exciting news! I feel bad for Jodie as she certainly gave it her best shot and she always came across as so enthusiastic about the role, but the writing and characterisation has been really below par (There's by the Youtuber, Jay Exci that I'm working my way through that takes a deep dive into what went wrong over the last two seasons, it's a long one but I'd recommend parts of it at least, and it's not from one of those 'SJW/Woke agenda' idiots either) and that is certainly Chibnall's fault. I never had a good feeling about him as a writer judging by his past form and he pretty much proved my point. I count maybe two memorable episodes over the last two seasons that he's done. I do really want the show to succeed again and I agree that I do hope it is another female doctor with a competent showrunner as the discourse around the show has become so toxic. It just needs a more wide range of stories, less and better developed characters and a more subtle and mature handling of themes.
July 29, 20213 yr Author It's such a massive shame to be losing Jodie, so we can only hope Chibnall's really upped his game for Series 13 (and these specials) to give her the send-off she really deserves. Honestly, kinda ecstatic at the news of Chibnall leaving, and let's PRAY the BBC have learned just how divisive and disengaging the show has been during his time and give us a new show-runner like RTD/Moffat that just... get the show and the fans a lot more than Chibnall does. Series 13 being 6 episodes now though
July 29, 20213 yr FINALLY!!! Chibnall was the worst thing to EVER happen to Doc Who. It could handle terrible drips like Martha Jones, appalling acting and special effects, terrible storylines and bad doctors like with Capaldi's era, but it cannot survive Chibnall. Jodie has unfortunately been a terrible doctor too. Sp much potential, but so shit.
July 29, 20213 yr Glad to be losing Chibnall as, whilst I have enjoyed the majority of the past two series, it does feel like the energy has been zapped away from it and in ways you’re trying to encourage the show to get to a point that it’s continually struggling to reach. He’s introduced three companions void of agency and personality and writes the Doctor to be Ms Exposition. The ideas are there but it just doesn’t come through in the execution in one form or another. The historicals have largely been fantastic though, so there’s a positive x It does worry me though that we’re not going to get proper development of what Series 12 introduced, the success of which feels slightly dependent on what is to come after. It’s odd to have a plan and introduce so many elements and then just… leave? Maybe that’s what the ongoing storyline of Series 13 will focus on but it feels like it should be something to unravel over a couple of series given they were such big ideas and changes to the whole continuity. I’m not as shocked to see Jodie leave given it’s now been a few years and it’s been the only project she’s done in that time. I do feel bad though that she’s not been given the full chance to explore her incarnation through having less episodes and suffering some poor writing. She’s such a joyous person and you can tell how much fun she’s had, I just wish they’d been able to configure her Doctor better. Also if Yaz is there until her final episode then Thirteen has had a really short lifetime oops. Dan coming for shortest running ‘proper’ companion as well. tbh it does make me worry slightly about the future of the show, which is natural given the showrunner and lead actor are leaving but I’m sure they would have announced any indefinite break at the same time (hopefully). It just doesn’t feel that long ago since it had it’s big relaunch so it would feel odd to go through another one. I’m intrigued as to who would even be in the running for showrunner too….
July 29, 20213 yr FWIW the show continuing has been confirmed by the BBC, their press release reads "We will announce plans for the new generation of Doctor Who in due course - watch this space!"
July 30, 20213 yr It’s gonna suck because if the next doctor will be a man (just out of pure casting choices I’m sure) but a better show runner will take the job also without a doubt, then people will automatically think of the one female doctor as the most unpopular one and we’ll never get one again. I’d love a relatively unknown actor to take the helm and really make it their own. Somewhere between Tennant and Capaldi would be perfect imo but building on from 13’s compassion/heart Edited July 30, 20213 yr by Dexton
July 30, 20213 yr I have similar thoughts to the majority in here - really sad that Jodie's going as I'd have loved to see another couple of series from her at least, but I'm not gutted to be losing Chibnall. I've not hated this era of the show at all, far from it, but there's a load of tweaks that need to be made and a new showrunner is a positive sign that we're gonna get a fresh outlook. I'm excited for the future and it's good to know that the BBC are committed to Doctor Who still (I mean, they have no reason not to be but the doom-mongers on some Doctor Who forums would have you think otherwise).
August 4, 20213 yr FWIW John Barrowman's hair is now dyed brown again. It'll be interesting to see if he does return to the show given what's been in the news recently about him. I suspect he will do, as it seems he isn't being kicked off any of his ITV shows. (Dancing on Ice, All Stad Musicals)
August 19, 20213 yr Creator of Babylon 5 and Sense8 J. Michael Straczynski has confirmed that he has been contacted by the BBC about the showrunner role. I can't say I've seen any of his works, but he seems like a popular choice from the social media discussion! And I do remember Sense8 being very well recieved a couple of years ago. (And of course, he clearly has a strong background in sci-fi writing)

August 23, 20213 yr 14 years today since Peter Capaldi was announced as the Doctor 7 years ago i remember it well
August 23, 20213 yr Spoilers for a "character" returning: Filming commences again soon (likely for one of Jodie's 2022 specials), and extras have been recruited to act as UNIT soldiers! Of course the organisation was said to be shut down in the last series.
September 14, 20213 yr Author Apparently we're to expect a new trailer at some point this week, but not sure how reliable that will turn out to be! Honestly I can't wait until this era's over now and we can hopefully have the buzz of a new era / new Doctor / new showrunner with a major emphasis on marketing and promotion, because given that we're potentially now only over a few weeks away from the show starting, I feel literally no excitement whatsoever. No promo shots, no posters, not a trailer to be massively excited by, nothing. It's so frustrating considering how massively hyped you'd be for every new series in the RTD/Moffat eras.

I'm sure all the promo pics will be as exciting as the ones for the New Years special... wasn't one just Graham, Yaz and Ryan sitting around a dinner table  It does seem a bit meh in terms of promo and excitement. You're right RTD/ Moff were on it in terms of hooks and gunning on the promo....
September 14, 20213 yr Trailers are important to build hype - they don't have to reveal loads about the plotlines but even something relatively action packed to show on BBC1 to lead up to the new series, with a "coming soon" tag for now, would do wonders. Right now, you wouldn't believe the show's meant to be back within the next couple of months...!
September 14, 20213 yr The only way trailers have influenced my viewing habits has been when I have decided NOT to watch a programme because I'm already bored with it even before it has started.
September 18, 20213 yr Looks like Jack won't be returning again anytime soon, on the main show or Big Finish. @1439215857348055042
September 19, 20213 yr I don't really get why he was blacklisted in the first place. His antics were known way back at the time and even discussed at times on the DVD commentaries for Series 1. The whole Noel Clarke thing is obviously wrong, I'm not saying what John did was right, however given John has apologised for making anyone feel uncomfortable, its not like he can do much else. So I can understand his frustration and anger.
September 19, 20213 yr Eh?? What's the John Barrowman story? Tbh, like Chez, Doc Who trailers would never make me want to watch. The only thing they did was turn me off some episodes. I would see Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, the pirates, the haunted house, the devil, and be like ... nope. Hard pass for next week.
