Given the impressive second half performance of Edinson Cavani in the second half of United’s game today, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on and rate the former players to wear the infamous #7 shirt for the club since the time of Eric Cantona to present.

This is how I would rate the players from best to worst based on their performances with Manchester United;

1. Cristiano Ronaldo
2. David Beckham
3. Eric Cantona
4. Michael Owen
5. Antonio Valencia
6. Edinson Cavani
7. Angel Di Maria
8. Memphis Depay
9. Alexis Sanchez

Anyone have anything to add?

As someone completely biased against Manchester United I'll do this and give my commentrary on their performances for Man Utd!

 

1. Cantona - he was just a brilliant player and I'd say he was the catalyst for the "Golden Generation" that followed along with all the trophies

2. Ronaldo - againt, his transformation was amazing. From a teenager with potential to the best player in the Premier League

3. Beckham - controversial, but he was never a top, top player imo. He was great at set pieces and was a good player of course, but his media fame propelled him

4. Valencia - good servant to the club, think he is really unsung

5. Di Maria - huge flop but then the rest of this bunch are

6. Depay - I can't work out if he just couldn't cut it in the league or he was played out of the position. I'll go with the former as he is clearly a good player

7. Cavani - he's got Man Utd 3 points, which is something

8. Owen - medal thief

9. Sanchez - probably the worst transfer that I can remember in the past 10 years in all of English football

Cantona, Ronaldo, Beckham, Valencia, Owen, Cavani, Di Maria, Depay, Sanchez

 

 

Kanchelskis, Ince, Strachan, Coppell and Wilkins are surely worth a mention but most of these players aren't fit to lick the boots of Denis Law, Georgie Best or Bryan Robson

That’s quite true actually and it was at this time of Manchester United history that I pledged to become a lifelong fan.

 

As for your other point...

 

9. Sanchez - probably the worst transfer that I can remember in the past 10 years in all of English football

I think it is an interesting subject for discussion and I might just open up a thread of worst football transfers to date and see where Sanchez ranks in that! :o

1 Cristiano Ronaldo [the GOAT, no one will ever achieve more in the shirt]

2 David Beckham [club legend]

3 Eric Cantona [a boss on the pitch]

4 Antonio Valencia [very good player for most of his tenure]

5 Michael Owen [for the City winner alone]

6 Edinson Cavani [early days but he's already done more than the 3 flops below]

7 Angel Di Maria [should have been great but never adapted]

8 Memphis Depay [overrated & arrogant, only good in farmers leagues]

9 Alexis Sanchez [the worst signing of all time]

This is based on the impact that they had while they were wearing the number 7 shirt at Man Utd and not what they've done at other clubs or at international level. Not seen all of these players play while they were at the club but I've heard about them or seen some video clips of them.
