Based on their form heading into Euro 2020 and during the tournament itself I would have had Italy as strong favourites to win the World Cup next year so it will be crazy if they fail to qualify. They seem to have dropped off a lot since winning the Euros.

Italy are still good, Switzerland are a good team. Jorginho missed two of his stupid penalties in the same game. These qualifier groups can be a bit mad sometimes, just look at Portugal too. All it takes really is one bad result and an off day and then you jepordise your chance to qualify. The gulf at international level is so big at times, so even a really average side can trash some of the part-time teams.
Seems like Iceland have gone back to where they were pre-2016 Euros :( They had their time in the sun I guess!

Always gonna happen with a small nation like Iceland everything needs to be perfect for them to do well and qualify for tournaments!

Robbed" South Africa are set to make a "formal complaint" about "questionable decisions" made by the match officials in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Ghana, says their football association chief.

Bafana Bafana needed a draw to reach the third and final round of African qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, but Ghana won with a controversial penalty.

"The match officials have decided the game, which is not what is supposed to happen," claimed South Africa Football Association's (Safa) chief executive Tebogo Mothlante.

"We will be writing to both Caf [the Confederation of African Football] and [world governing body] Fifa - firstly to investigate how the game was handled and secondly to challenge some of these decisions.

"We have already registered with the match commissioner that we will be making a formal complaint."

The Black Stars' narrow win enabled them to reach the African World Cup play-offs by the narrowest of margins, ousting South Africa at the top of the group on goals scored

Yes, double figures with 10-0 win over San Marino. England’s captain scored four goals – all in the first half.

Welcome to the Sports forum. It was probably the biggest mismatch I've seen in an England game last night.

Wales captain Gareth Bale will play no part in Tuesday's decisive World Cup qualifier against Belgium.

The Real Madrid forward has been left out of manager Robert Page's squad of 23 for the game in Cardiff.

Bale, 32, was taken off at half-time in Saturday's 5-1 thrashing of Belarus, a precautionary substitution he described as "planned" afterwards.

Serbia and Switzerland knock Portugal and Italy to playoffs! Norway looks to try to do the same thing today in Amsterdam, but I have my doubts.

In a similar manor to the Euros, the play-offs will consist of a one-legged semi final and final where 3 teams will qualify. In the draw, a seeded team will be drawn at home to an unseeded team. Another draw will then be made to match each semi-final to another so we knew who will then play each other in the three finals.

*Russia are actually banned from the 2022 World Cup but can play under a neutral name.

Did they miss out based on the worst second placed aides?

Did they miss out based on the worst second placed aides?

They both finished third in their group.

I don't like how the seeded teams get to play a one game playoff at home, it should be a home-and-away aggregate.
The play offs used to be 2 legs. But there were 8 teams playing for four places back then. Now there are 12 teams playing for 3 places. This is due to there now being 10 qualifying groups instead of 9 after Kosovo, Gibraltar etc joined. There’s only 2 games window to play the play-offs so 2 legs are no longer possible without dropping it to only 6 teams taking part.
The play-off scenario is almost certainly the best it could be. The Nations League can turn the number of teams into one which mathematically works with the number of places available, and the next Nations League starts in the summer so there's only the March dates available.

England manager Gareth Southgate has signed a new contract to keep him in the role until December 2024.

Scotland and Wales will play each other in the final if the both win their semis. The same with Portugal and Italy.

At least one of Portugal/Italy are going to miss the World Cup :o It can't be Italy again surely.
