The only entry here from the highly-anticipated team-up album from Skepta, Chip & Young Adz is 'St Tropez'. It just missed out on being one of the 3 charting songs from the album officially but found more success here. Featuring a very-prominent sample of M.I.A's 'Paper Planes', the track does rely quite heavily on nostalgia for that track. All the verses are solid and they all show some nice personality but it's the sample that shines the most. You'll come away singing 'bonafide hustler making my name'.

I still can't believe this missed the top 10 in the official chart. This took it's time to grow on me but has held up brilliantly through the year. On the surface, it's a pretty simple track. A basic sex track that relies on a bunch of metaphors relating guns to love, it's a song we've heard before but there's a little spark here that elevates it above similar songs. J Hus is obviously an incredible talented lyricist which doesn't really get chance to shine here even if some of the wordplay is particularly fun. However it's Burna Boy's chorus that has kept the song in my head all year. Paired with a really bouncy beat it makes a track that's always worth going back to.

WAP is a song that doesn't really need much commentary. One of the biggest hits of the year and one that everyone seems to have an opinion on. We hear a lot of generic sex jams, so to make this type of song work, you need to be uber-explicit and offensive which is a task that both artists are successful with (Cardi's 'throat' line and Meg's 'spell my name'. The video is obviously another massive part of the appeal, even if the censoring to 'gushy' makes the song sound 100x worse. The Macaroni line must be a reference to the Vine though surely otherwise that is really not a sexy way of describing that :lol:

Hailee's first song to hold up well another to make my EOY top 100 since the holy trilogy of singles she opened her chart career with that just kept sneaking higher in my rankings. And while this might not quite live up to the same standards, it was a massive grower in my affections. It's a lot easier to make a catchy song when you base it on an already popular hit and that's what they did here with this reworking of Annie Lennox's 'No More I Love You's' (which I've only just found out was a cover in itself). Shame that there was not really much else to shout about from the EP. Although I think Hailee does her best work when acting so I'm incredibly excited for her role in Disney+'s upcoming Hawkeye series.

Despite her being rap's favourite female vocalist with her numerous appearances on the biggest rap albums of the 2010's, I'd never really listened to Jhené's own music. But this hooked me in on the first listen. The contrast between Jhené's quiet, sweet gentle tones and the overtly sexual lyrics is what completely makes the song. It's addictive to listen to and the video that is very 90's R&B inspired and is much less explicit than you think showing her and another dancing showing off some choreography is cute and plays well for the song. Also how much did Big Sean pay her to write his song? :lol:

One of the flukiest #1's in my chart in 2020, 'Miss Me' was the role-reversed follow-up to superior mega-hit they earlier in the year. The song this pipped to the top spot managed to hold up much better and is yet to appear. While it might be no 'Dinner Guest', I feel like this still deserved to do better. AJ has mastered the flow he uses in the chorus, Mo always produces his best when he's paired with AJ and the video is really fun too with homages to Migos/Drake's 'Walk It Talk It' & Kanye/Lil Pump 'I Love It'.

Just missing out on a top-half appearance is 21 Savage's foray into R&B. The song features Summer Walker reworking 90's R&B classic 'My Little Secret' by Xscape in the chorus. She also gets her own verse where her vocals really shine. We're most used to 21 for his dark and heavily explicit trap hits like Bank Account, but 21 is also a self-proclaimed R&B jam lover. In fact he did an Instagram live where he sang Beyoncé, Usher & Aaliyah. 21's monotone drawl shouldn't work on this type of track but it somehow does and ended up being one of tracks that really got me through the first lockdown.

Kicking off the top half is a song that was a new entry to yesterday's top 40! I did enjoy The Weeknd's latest but no single track really stood out for me apart from this one. The chorus is so smooth and it reminds me of another one of my favourites from Abel: Rockin'. So happy to see it get some belated chart success.

Save Your Tears sounded nice from hearing it on the chart show yesterday. Miss Me was okay but not on the same level as Dinner Guest for me!

One of the standout tracks from 'Confetti' is this absolute crowd-pleasing Sia-esque ballad. Very bold and very brash, it's the sort of song that hits you right in the face and demands attention from the first second. The girls already said they had big plans for this one on tour which I'm very excited to see and its such an anthem and seems designed for extravagant choreography.

While the world was loving Rockstar, it was instead the remake of Ashanti's 2002 'Baby' with an additional verse from Megan that was dominating my chart. It feels like an audition from Meg for WAP with another highly sexually explicit rap track. Both of the rappers glide through the track effortlessly and Ashanti's vocals are beautiful and too pure for this track. It's so good to hear from Ashanti again and Baby's certainly a better rapper than Ja Rule.

Who would have thought that Juice's punk-rap and Marshmello's heavy EDM stylings would gel so well together? Tion Wayne got his first hit as the lead artist by recruiting Stormzy and the up-and-coming Dutchavelli to create the annoyingly catchy 'I Dunno'. Dutch felt like he was due for a breakthrough after 'Only If You Knew' was one of the biggest underground hits of recent times and he completely steals the song with his unbelievably gruff and low voice. While it was certainly a song that smashed (winning single of the year at GRM Daily's 2020 Rated Awards), it's legacy is probably going to be as being the song that inspired a hundred diss tracks. Stormzy's verse was seen as being an indirect at Chip and gets a mention in 'Flowers' but it's more unambiguously referenced in Abra Cadabra's On Deck that even goes far as sampling the hook is his disses at Tion.

The best-performing album track from 'positions' is Safety Net. I wasn't too excited about a Ty feature when it was announced but he always has a way of popping up on songs I love and he's done it again. The chorus is absolutely killer and so lush on the ears. Ty really surprised with a memorable verse that actually enhances the song. Ariana's voice is heavenly like it always is, especially in the song's bridge. This would certainly be my choice for the next single.
