Just popping in to firstly give our Kath someone else to talk to but secondly to say I'm also in love with this. It's very coherent and definitely rewards multiple plays, she's just amazing in the way she can completely master a sound and change from album to album :wub:

It's quite crazy to think how different all albums are yet they sound very her.

 

Giving it my first listen having only heard Pay Your Way in Pain before and purposefully ignoring the rest of the singles.

It's a really interesting album with some great tracks - I particularly love “Down and Out Downtown” which is far too short IMO, and I'm warming to it/into into it more than the last one- there's still something not quite clicking with me to fully love it however, and still quite a few mis-steps. That's nothing to do with the subject matter and what inspired the title of the album, I believe in letting the music and whatnot speak more than the context or any views the artist may have, but yeah- it's good but nowhere near great unfortunately.

After three listens the 2nd half definitely feels stronger particularly My Baby Wants a Baby, ...At the Holiday Party and Down although I really love Live in the Dream

I hope a bird sh*ts on the face of that Pitchfork reviewer trying to be woke with their pretentious write-up. To think Annie is headlining their festival but they have staff writing that she is being insensitive and ignorant towards black people and racial issues with this album :/

I wasn't immediately hooked at first but it has got its claws into me now — the second half of the album is especially fantastic. The title track is a little too pastiche for me, however.

 

She really doesn't get enough credit for completely committing to the sound and the aesthetics of each album. She truly inhabits each era.
