The Masked Singer doesnt seem to do much for the winner anyway just look at Nicola Roberts.

I fully expected another album from her after her win.

It doesn't seem like Nicola has much interest in doing another album unfortunately. It seemed that Nicola taking part in The Masked Singer was partly to promote the fact she was starring in a West End show, but it got cancelled in the end because of coronavirus. So arguably that was going to be the "did something for the winner" moment, her embarking on a career in the West End.

Didn't you know Nicola was about to do a West end show! :w00t:

Wait she got the west end show gig BEFORE the masked singer? Jesus some people in here really did scrape the barrel to justify Mel C maybe doing it.

All I can say for Mel B is she got paid for this. Let's be honest this is washed up singers or B list celebs getting some money not a new career and it doesn't need to be painted as more and I love Mel B.

I think the issue is that both Sophie and Mel B have such recognizable voices which are not that versatile, so when they try to hide it, it becomes eh...

That is most definitely true.. She sounded so much better after her reveal. And it makes sense both her and Sophie did not sound as good as usual while trying to hide your voice. Wish they both hadn't done that, Skin didn't do it last year and neither did Nicola, and they were both guessed immediately which did not effect their chances of winning (at least for Nicola).

I love how Mel was described as a 'pop icon' after her reveal though. Damn right!

Yes but shes been talking about releasing a second solo album for years.

This is a bit off topic, but did she not recently confirm she's releasing new music next year? She was about to do the West End show but only for a short run, until July. I am sure that without Covid happening, she would have had more up her sleeve in 2020 after The Masked Singer. There was quite some buzz and press attention around her this time last year and the show would have only helped that even more. Such a shame, but oh well.

It's a pity, but I suppose for a few months she was in limbo waiting to see whether she could or couldn't do those theatre shows, I guess this meant she couldn't really make any other commitments. By the time it was cancelled it was quite a few months after Masked Singer. I hope she's able to release a new album eventually, if that really is coming - I guess it's not been considered to be the right time yet (and oops yes, this is definitely off topic  )
Shame she was gone so early. I somehow didn't click on her voice on the 1st performance but as soon as she said the clue about toilet paper.

Well Gabrielle is through atleast 🙌

Dont know who the others are yet !

Loved hearing Mel B's upper register. Reminding me of how she used to blend so beautifully with Emma.

I don't watch the show usually, but she seemed to do a great job. I would say it sounds like it's difficult to breathe in those masks though.

I guess part of the fun for these celebs is seeing if they can disguise themselves from the judges. But. Honestly, I wish she'd just come strutting out...sang in her comfort zone...and maybe slayed some 80s rock song or something.

I don't think she sounded bad or anything, per se. Probably starting with her being miscast in Rent, I've felt like every time she's sung on her own, it's been uncomfortably out of her range. I feel this way about Rent, LA State of Mind, the times she sang on It's a Scary Life, For Once in My Life (though I like the song), some of the Chicago recordings I've heard, and now this. In the past 20 years, I think she's only truly shined as the amazing performer on stage she is...when she was with the Spice Girls...ROTSG tour, Olympics, 2019 tour.

Anyway. Like I said, I don't think she was bad here or anything. I didn't watch this full episode, but I do think she would've gone home first week doing this on the US version. It's less about having an amazing voice on this show than it is coming to entertain. This was too subdued, and I don't think her showing some moves would have given away who she is. But. Credit where it's due. She DID sing live...and I'm convinced most of the acts on the US version are performing to a recording.

Mel B sounds best singing in her lower register and softer. She is at her best like that in 2 become 1, viva Forever and Mama.

Just like all the Spice Girls their voices aren't very versatile but are distinctive and sound best when doing their parts of group songs.

This is all true. I often found her to be lost on her own. I mean, so did Mel C for 20years, and half of Emma's solo career, but with Mel B it always seemed to me that she was being wrongly advised.

Cant Get You Out of My Head is a great song and she did really well, but yeah it wasnt great for her. I do think she can do rock and r'n'b really well on her own, rather than pop. YET because of the Spice Girls being seen as a mainly pop act (even though they are much more musically rich than that), I guess it is expected of her to sing pop music. But this is wrong. She is at her most confident elsewhere on her own. Of course, she shines on stage with the Spice Girls and given the ruight team, I bet she would have been excellent on her own too eventually.

Yes, the other Spice Girls' voices arent very versatile. Perhaps Emma's is the most adaptable as she has done, and very well, many genres that she excelled at. Mel C too, although her voice is more versatile in terms of scale rather than genres.

Basically, Mel B could have been better here and throughout her career. If only she had focused on her music and singing instead of putting out so much bad music  She is the one, for me, that has plenty of cross-over appeal both in rock fans, pop fans, r'n'b, etc, and she has the best stage presence overall. She just needs to get better at singing and making music...

I think that's a common issue with people who try to break out of groups - they usually end up feeling like they were typecast and forced to do a certain role within the group, so when they finally go solo they want to show that they're more than that. The issue is of course that there's usually a reason why they ended up being pushed in that direction within in the group, which is why so many solo members of groups end up failing. They simply don't know - or accept - their strengths and weaknesses.

As is often the case when groups go solo they aim for the music to be very different from the group they were part of.

Rarely do members go with similar sounding music to their groups music which can a mistake.

Smiles awkwardly in Geri Halliwell

Oh I don't know she had moments of brilliance in I want you back and Feels so good and then strong singles in Word up and Tell me (and Hotter would have been another one), yet none of them really sold at mass appeal... not saying they weren't hits I mean silver for IWYB is very decent but isn't it actually the lowest selling #1 for instance? I think the public just weren't here for her anyway for various reasons, one being that they had the impression she was this 'bitch' who pushed Geri out of the band, two being systematic racism.
