Commentary

Happy New Year everyone! Sadly I don't have the time for a traditional countdown this year, but the lists have been compiled as ever, despite not having a weekly chart anymore. 2020 has been a shockingly great year for music (the best since 2014 by my count!), considering the world was crumbling around us, and really helped me through it personally.

The cancellation of Eurovision led to a potential vacuum at the top end this year, with an entry from the contest or a national final quite often topping my end of year chart - last year Zero Gravity by Kate Miller-Heidke was victorious, though in 2018 no Eurovision related songs featured in my end of year top 15, so it's not an exact science. It's impossible to say whether any of this year's would-be entries would have made a much bigger impact with the benefit of the hype/more plays/performances and everything else, but nevertheless the surprise UK top 40 hit Think About Things by Icelandic singer Daði Freyr does manage to represent Eurovision in the top 10, at No.9.

A tight four-way tussle for the top was eventually won by one of my BJSC DNQs, Monster by US duo Pomplamoose and British singer/songwriter dodie, an absolutely stunning percussive rendition of a song from her 2019 EP Human, the original version of which was in my 2019 top 100. Easily my most played song of the year, Monster just edged out Goliath by Smith & Thell, an early 2020 BJSC winner for Hendinia which I'd have confirmed myself if they hadn't. A stirring Scandipop-folk anthem with a huge chorus by a talented Swedish duo who have been delivering the goods for years, it's the sort of thing that Radio 2 listeners would lap up and you wonder why on earth it's had no airplay in this country.

For the second year running, a German language song finishes in the top three, this time courtesy of Swiss singer Beatrice Egli, whose 80s power schlager track Bunt manages to be the best example of its genre for many a long year, pure colourful joy that brightened up a gloomier summer than usual (although the weather was good, at least!).

The new Steps album, What The Future Holds, just edged out Dua Lipa's mammoth Future Nostalgia to top my end of year chart - their second such victory after Tears On The Dancefloor did the same in 2017. Lead single, the Sia-penned What The Future Holds, finishes at No.7 for the year but follow-up Something In Your Eyes, a triumphant cover of Jenny Silver's 2011 Melodifestivalen entry, does even better and finishes in a closely fought fourth place, and is easily the most 'classic Steps' single since their heydey.

One of my two third placed BJSC entries this year rounds off the top five, US electro-pop act Midnight Kids having previously appeared in the 2018 EOY chart thanks to a remix for Goldfish, but this time going it alone they do even better and finish fifth with the 80s-influenced beauty Run It, a song which manages to feel both fresh and nostalgic at the same time.

Elsewhere in the top ten, Delta Goodrem had a productive year with various singles, a Christmas album and a new b-side, but surprisingly doesn't make the top five with anything, however Paralyzed was an absolute stunner and details the own battles she went through when she lost her ability to speak following surgery, and her long journey to recovery. The aforementioned Dua Lipa absolutely ruled the charts and the airwaves in 2020, with everything she touched this year turning to gold, and Physical represents her in the top 10, another wonderful 80s throwback with perhaps the biggest mainstream pop chorus of the year.

And rounding off the top 10 is the triumphant disco collaboration from Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, Rain On Me, probably the best superstar pairing in many years and a song that gave the duo a well deserved UK No.1.

Many other home and 'foreign' BJSC entries are scattered throughout, as are a few older songs that I only cottoned onto this year (Deborah Harry, Donna Lewis, H & Claire) and more big UK hits, including the huge summer No.1 Head & Heart from Joel Corry & MNEK (No.11), Little Mix's best single in years Sweet Melody (No.14), a rare fantastic biggest seller of the year, Blinding Lights by The Weeknd (No. 25) and a surprising top 40 appearance from K-pop giants BTS with their career best single Dynamite (No.37).

Aside from Steps and Dua (shout out to her great remix album Club Future Nostalgia too, which I've lumped in with the original here), the other main albums that got me through the year were Lady Gaga's triumphant return to pop, Chromatica, Kylie's brilliant Disco, two lockdown beauties from Taylor Swift, folklore and everglow, and Little Mix's Confetti, a real return to form after LM5 for me. Katy Perry's better than expected Smile, Patricia Kelly's solo album One More Year and Kate Miller-Hedike's quirky Child In Reverse also finish top ten.

So that was 2020, I really hope 2021 is far better for us all, but if music can continue at this quality I'll be happy, though let's just ignore the majority of the charts, but there has been more good stuff than usual!

Hi Rich! Here are my favourites:

2. Smith & Thell - Goliath

9. Daði Freyr - Think About Things Really delighted that this did so well in the chart, would have been great to have seen it at Eurovision though :(

11. Joel Corry feat MNEK - Head & Heart

16. Capulets - Stranger Love Enjoyed this from the recent BJSC! I don't know much about Capulets so will need to give more of their music a listen

21. Diodato - Fai Rumore

29. Taylor Swift feat HAIM - no body, no crime My favourite of the three charting songs from evermore, it's catchy in a bizarre sort of way

33. Ndlovu Youth Choir - We Will Rise

36. Dua Lipa - Levitating

39. SACHI feat Naïka - Enchanté This was also incredibly catchy, had this in my head for months

42. Dua Lipa - Break My Heart

44. beabadoobee - Care

52. Paul Woolford, Diplo & Kareen Lomax - Looking For Me

53. Julie Bergan with Seeb - Kiss Somebody I preferred Colourblind from this year but this wasn't bad at all either!

67. Matt Maeson - Hallucinogenics (Seeb Remix)

71. Montaigne - Don't Break Me

81. Master KG feat Nomcebo Zikode - Jerusalema I'm not the biggest fan of this but would have loved it to go Top 40 just because of how different it is from everything else in the chart

82. Eden - Feker Libi

95. Ed Sheeran - Afterglow

100. Powfu feat beabadoobee - death bed (coffee for your head)

Great list, thanks for posting!

It's only one Year-end chart, where I like something and can do a big comment.

ESC 2020 could be the worst Eurovision ever and now we will have almost the same awful line-up in 2021. I liked only Irish choice.

"Cicciolina" - not a big fan of song, but iconic NF performance pushed her into my chart together with interval act (Krista Siegfrids - 6 On Parempi Kuin 1)

Krista :

"Kingdom Come" - weaker than Anna's previous attempts, "We Are One" was my favourite in Melodifestivalen.

"The World We Left Behind", "Winning Ways" - I even prefer new Bucks Fizz songs over 80s material, of course if don't count perfect "The Land of Make Believe".

"Bunt" - two schlager Youtube channels became the important music source for my re-launched weekly chart in March 2019, so some German, Swiss, Austrian acts had some big hits in "Grozio Dainos". "Bunt" was represented in my chart, but the most successful schlager song in 2020 was Melissa Naschenweng - Dein Herz Verliert.

"Mini Schwiiz, Mini Heimat" - current # 7 in my chart, "Was Geht Ab" still her best song and video too.

"Don't Give Up (Don't Let Go)" - What is it ? I'm a big fan of H and Claire debut album, but don't remember this track. :)

"I Want That Man" - Why this old Debbie's single was included in top 2020 songs list ?

No love for "Majakad" or you just don't know this Eesti Laul entry ?

P.S : I didn't compile full Year-end charts in 2019 and 2020, maybe will do special "Grozio Dainos" 100th edition with top 100 best songs, but my top 2 songs from already the past year are ...

Janet Buterus - Flying Free (half Belarusian / half Lithuanian singer, it was her 8th unsuccessful attempt in National ESC pre-selection)

Marija Akelan - Visa Dangu (very underrated Lithuanian beauty with the highlight of her short career, she knows 3 languages and perform her songs on Lithuanian, Russian and English, but Lithuanian versions sounds more magical, "Meile" is wonderful too)

Thanks for commenting Pete! Yes would have absolutely loved to have seen Think About Things at Eurovision, would have got a much higher chart peak too I guess. Glad you like the Capulets track, they have a lot of potential and a few other solid songs so far. I think you were one of the biggest fans of Enchanté too, thanks for the support!

Thanks very much for the big comment, much appreciated!

I thought the 2021 line-up was pretty solid, not incredible though and I'm hoping a lot of the returning artists return with better songs.

I preferred Ashes to Ashes to Kingdom Come (in fact, that was in my top ten of 2019), but still liked it. I did enjoy We Are One too, it was very anthemic.

Yes, The Fizz are really good, perfect pop from Mike Stock, especially these two songs, although The Land Of Make Believe is certainly a pop classic.

Thanks for all the links, I'll check them out. I received an album/DVD for Christmas called Schlager 2020 which has a lot of fantastic songs on it, including the Melissa Naschenweng you mentioned: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Schlager-2020-die-...s/dp/B08DQL8HMZ

I've always liked Beatrice Egli right back to her debut single, but really love her recent material, hence her two appearances this year.

Don't Give Up (Don't Let Go) is a b-side from H & Claire from the same time as their album, apparently it was on the CD single to one of their singles, possibly Half A Heart. It's a really good song, just been added to iTunes/Spotify etc a few weeks ago as part of a b-sides EP.

I only just heard I Want That Man in 2020, as it was part of the old Top Of The Pops 1989 reruns on the BBC, so I wanted to show it some love in my end of year chart as I do include old songs if it's the first time I heard them in that year.

I've never heard Majakad, I don't always check out all of the Eesti Laul entries, I will have a listen to it, thanks.

Thanks for those links too, I will also check those out.

Thanks AH! Yes I liked Storm, although probably need to relisten as don't remember it that well! A Forest is indeed a Eurodance cover of The Cure, which actually works surprisingly well! It was on the same album as Close Cover, which was added belatedly to streaming platforms last year - good album too.

"Majakad" was a fan favourite, that's why I thought that you heard it.

It's typical schlager. Synne was third in My Ideal Eurovision - 2019 with "I'll Do It My Way" and had some other hits in "Grozio Dainos" (Levist Valjas, Teemant, Naita Ennast)

Thanks, I checked out the songs you posted earlier on and I liked but didn't love Majakad. Meile was good, and I loved Was Geht Ab - Beatrice Egli has a fantastic back catalogue! Dein Herz Verliert is good too - rock chick schlager!

Will add the others here to my playlist to check.

Hey Rich! From your top 40:

2. Smith & Thell - Goliath

4. Steps - Something In Your Eyes

6. Delta Goodrem - Paralyzed  Definitely my favourite of her 2020 singles as well, an absolute stunner even before her Instagram video explaining her actual paralysis.

7. Steps - What The Future Holds

8. Dua Lipa - Physical

9. Daði Freyr - Think About Things The winner that got away...! Still so weird to think this was a multi-week top 40 hit but it really grew on me, such a fun little track.

10. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me

11. Joel Corry feat MNEK - Head & Heart

13. Delta Goodrem - Keep Climbing

14. Little Mix - Sweet Melody

18. Delta Goodrem - Let It Rain

22. Steps - To The Beat Of My Heart

23. Dotter - Bulletproof I was rooting for Dotter or Anna to win Melfest, though Move was still a strong winner

25. The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

29. Taylor Swift feat HAIM - no body, no crime

30. Ella Henderson - Take Care Of You

35. Dua Lipa - Love Again

36. Dua Lipa - Levitating My personal favourite from Future Nostalgia

Hey Rich, eventually commenting

1. Pomplamoose feat dodie - Monster I was initially going to say I didn't think much of this but it did grow quickly on second listen. Sad it didn't qualify for you but sometimes the songs we love don't get the success we want.

2. Smith & Thell - Goliath a stomping entry, only 'Pyramids' beat it for me from Hendinia.

5. Midnight Kids feat Annika Wells - Run It amazing song and my favourite of your entries since joining as I've already told you.

8. Dua Lipa - Physical

9. Daði Freyr - Think About Things amazing to see this get Spotify support, a big moment for Eurovision getting in the official top 40 chart when it seemed unlikely to happen ever again!

10. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me

11. Joel Corry feat MNEK - Head & Heart

14. Little Mix - Sweet Melody definitely one of their very best now I'd say, certainly the best since 'Touch' imo. Was lovely albeit a fan campaign to see them actually get to #1 in the end!

15. Way Out West - Mindcircus

16. Capulets - Stranger Love

20. Hayley Ross - Come Back (N-Joi Remix) Brighton represent .*

24. Loods - Gummi another solid entry!

25. The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

29. Taylor Swift feat HAIM - no body, no crime

30. Ella Henderson - Take Care Of You

31. Erika Vikman - Cicciolina

33. Ndlovu Youth Choir - We Will Rise

36. Dua Lipa - Levitating wasn't initially wowed by this but now I see why it sounded like it could be a hit lol!

37. BTS - Dynamite so damn catchy

39. SACHI feat Naïka - Enchanté

40. Ava Max - Kings & Queens

41. The Weeknd - In Your Eyes

42. Dua Lipa - Break My Heart

43. Lady Gaga - Stupid Love

45. Little Mix - Break Up Song

48. Agnes - Fingers Crossed

50. Lady Gaga - Babylon

52. Paul Woolford, Diplo & Kareen Lomax - Looking For Me

58. Katy Perry - Daisies

61. Kylie Minogue - Say Something

64. PS1 feat Alex Hosking - Fake Friends

67. Matt Maeson - Hallucinogenics (Seeb Remix)

70. Noonie Bao - Pyramids

75. Julia - SEXTO loved this, european pop to a T!

85. Doja Cat - Say So

86. Will Ferrell & My Marianne - Husavik (My Hometown)

91. Lady Gaga - Alice One of the big standouts off the album!

95. Ed Sheeran - Afterglow surprised a little to see this not smashing as big despite it's #2 peak as I thought. I suspect he'll be back to #1's later in the year though lol

96. EVERGLOW - LA DI DA

Fab stuff, wasn't massive on Katy or Kylie's material this era though sadly (although I have only heard SS by Kylie tbf so maybe not a good argument there) :(
