I know the stakes were very different but it's interesting to see the difference in the radio communication between the 2 McLaren drivers and the team. Whilst Lando told them to shut up, Daniel was in almost constant communication, saw how it was going down and he was the one to make the call to change tyres.

End result was a solid 4th for him.

He'd have come out a very comfortable second yes but the problem would have been had it cleared up again and everyone behind him remained on dries then he'd have to pit again back for slicks so would have probably fell out of the points altogether. Impossible to say though.

I think even the wrong weather forecast didn't have it getting better, with so few laps left it'd have to have been quite wrong the other way to not have finished 2nd.

On another note, and he had a solid drive yesterday until the rain so perhaps a bit unfair, but Perez recent run of results is 6, 16, R, 19, 8, 5, 9. Must be a long while since a RBR driver scored as few as 24 points from 7 races, and only Hungary where it's not been down to him.

Edit: Or not  Albon 22 between Italy and Turkey last season!

In an announcement that surprises no-one Qatar has been confirmed this year for 21st November as the replacement for Australia's race.

The circuit also holds a 10 year contract commencing in 2023.

Another dull circuit with little passing opportunities (under current spec) and no character has been added long term, once again

The circuit was clearly designed for Moto GP, I can't see any obvious high-speed to hard breaking points for F1?

Mugello surprised (with fears of a lack of overtaking), with its long straight - I can't see this managing the same. The circuit isn't a complete no hoper, maybe some tweaks for an F1 extension could help. (whilst still maintaining their Moto layout... The straight could be extended and Turn 1 sharpened, likewise Turn 10 (maybe with a little banking there?).

EDIT: Oh, a new circuit is being planned for F1... NEW TILKEDROME INCOMING. :nocheer:

Oh lord give us strength. No one wants a new flat dull Sand Prix. We don’t even want the ones we have!!

I would not go that far.

But in any event, the Sand Prix‘s Are universally dull. Can you name a single one from the UAE that didn’t make you fall into a coma from boredom by lap 10?

There are two things I can remember from the baffling 3 Sand Prix‘s we had last year (and tbh from the last 5 years of then too) and that was Ocon for a podium on the Bahrain Ring and Romains fireball.

Abu Dhabi has had a bit of advantage in that it's held 3 season finales (2010, 2014 & 2016) so there was always natural interest in how the championship would end but in terms of an exciting race in itself then the only one that comes to mind was 2012 which was a genuinely great race.

I would rank Abu Dhabi as the worst circuit yes, at least they have actually made some changes to the layout this year so we'll see if that does anything.

Aside from the issues with racing in a country with a dubious political system in place (but lets face it the sport's never had a problem with that ever) I don't have issue with having a race at any of the circuits in the Middle East (even if they are dull but then so are Spain and France), the problem is that region is over represented on the calendar.

Personally, I'd really like to see S. Africa back on the circuit, a race in Scandinavia and at least one more South American race.

My ideal calendar would be 22 races and would take in as many regions across the world as possible like the following

Europe - 8 races

UK - Silverstone

France - Dijon (re-profiled)

Germany - Hockenheimring (old layout re-profiled)

Italy - Monza

Belgium - Spa

Monaco - Monte Carlo

Austria - Osterreichring

European GP - Rotates between Russia, Portugal, Spain, San Marino, Hungary, Netherlands, Finland and others

N. America - 3 races

USA - Watkins Glen (re-profiled)

Mexico - Hermanos Rodriguez

Canada - Gilles Villenueve

S.America - 2 races

Brazil - Sao Paolo

Argentina - Buenos Aires

Asia - 5 races

Japan - Suzuka

Malaysia - Sepang

Asian Gp - Rotates between China, Turkey, S. Korea, Singapore

Azerbaijahn - Baku

India - Buddh

Africa - 2 races

S. Africa - Kyalami

Egypt - Purpose built

Oceania 1 race

Australia - Adelaide (re-profiled)

Middle East - 1 race

Middle East GP - rotates between, Bahrain, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia

France, UK, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Belgium are 1st tier nations whose races are permanent fixtures due to their historical significance and cultural contribution to the sport

Japan, Brazil, Australia, S. Africa, Canada are 2nd tier nations whose races are prestige events in order to guarantee a genuine World Championship on all continents.

There is a maximum of 10 sprint races per season. Circuits will be chosen on a rotating basis. Each team will start one race in first, one in second, one in third etc. until they have begun a race in every possible grid position. Each of the teams may run only only 1 car per sprint race. Any driver entered in the the FIA F1 World Drivers Championship may not compete in a sprint race. Points will go to the Constructor Championship.

I really like the look of the absolute majority of that!!

Id not say that India was particularly deserving of a permanent spot, Baku either but I would give one of those spots to Turkey as the circuit is generally pretty decent.

Having Sepang back would be mega.

I know what you mean about India, but I put it in because there's nothing else in that part of the world. It was difficult to leave Turkey out but I wouldn't complain about swapping those 2 around.

I was hugely tempted to put the Nordschleife in as well but it seemed a step too far from reality

As great as that looks a lot of them aren't grade 1 FIA circuits sadly.

My calendar would be:

Albert Park

Red Bull Ring

Baku

Bahrain

Spa

Interlagos

Montreal

Shanghai

Magny-Cours (not Paul Ricard)

Nurburgring/Hockenheim (switching each season like they used to for a few years)

Hungaroring

Buddh

Fuji (NOT suzuka perhaps controversially)

Sepang

Mexico City

Zanvoort

Portimao

Marina Bay

Jerez (better than Barcelona/Valencia)

Istanbul

Silverstone

Indianapolis (better than COTA)

But yes Kyalami needs a revamp and put that on the calendar to get Africa representation.

As great as that looks a lot of them aren't grade 1 FIA circuits sadly.

Yeah I know, but it was a fantasy list (although i had to draw the line with the nordschleife as that's beyond making suitable for F1. Same with Circuit de la Sarthe which i'd have put in over Dijon otherwise.

I really like the Fuji circuit too but Suzuka has 130R and Spoon so it wins. Although I'd return 130r to its original design

They’ve been “entering” F1 for longer than MKS have been releasing a new album so I’ll believe it when I see it.

The grid needs new blood tho. And not buy a current team but like full on new expand the grid teams

F1 hasn't had a full grid since the collapse of Simtek.

In 1995...

Someone needs to talk Toyota into coming back. If this entry from the VW group does happen, then that would be VW, Stellantis and the Alliance on the grid, bring back Toyota and thats the worlds 4 largest manufacturers.

Tho I am not sure with how money grabbing LibertyMedia have been, how they haven't made overt overtures towards a major Chinese manufacturer yet. Many of them want to crack the western market for "legitimacy" and other marketing reasons (like Hyundai-Kia), would be weird for them not to pursue this given the Chinese GP.

Would be great to see Toyota back on the grid or have Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen but I just can't see that happening. The last thing we want if there are new teams is another Campos/Hispania/HRT situation.
