Gaga releases lead single Born This Way

10 years ago Lady Gaga released “Born This Way“ as the lead single from her album of the same name. The song debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 6 weeks at number one. Praised by fans and criticss alike, “Born This Way“ has sold over 8 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. The LGBT anthem broke numerous records and was the fist number one single in history to feature the word “transgender“ in its lyrics.

“It’s very literal,“ Gaga said of the song’s lyrics. “I said, ‘this-is-who-the-fuсk-I-am anthem,’ but I don’t want it to be hidden in poetic wizardry and metaphors. I want it to be an attack, an assault on the issue because I think, especially in today's music, everything gets kind of washy sometimes and the message gets hidden in the lyrical play.“

I feel super emotional waking up this morning seeing my Twitter timeline flooded with people reminiscing about the release of this song. It changed so many lives :snif:

10 years ago! :drama:  The release of this was legitimately such a major event, it really felt like it was the main topic of conversation for everyone. Incredibly impactful! Admittedly I wasn't head over heels with the song or video at the time, not to the extent of some previous Gaga releases, but I did like it! (I ended up much preferring Judas :kink: , and then The Edge of Glory was the one for me).

I certainly appreciated the importance of Born This Way's message... it was still pretty outspoken and bold of her to be so direct like that, in 2011. It's so clear now how important the song (and Lady Gaga herself) was particularly for the kids/teens who may have been questioning themselves, or in a difficult situation at school/at home, and Gaga was a source of light for them...

Its iTunes performance was INSANE on this day. It topped iTunes EVERYWHERE and sold 1 million in just 5 days!! The immediate impact was phenomenal helped by how hyped the single was in the weeks before it dropped.

The stats and records it broke are still to this day some of her best chart achievements <3

Oh wow yes I definitely remember the monstrous iTunes sales for this and the frustration over its robbed UK #1 position! It was like the opposite of 'Bad Romance' - that missed out on a US #1 but made it here, while 'Born This Way' did get that chart-topping status over there. What an important song! I was 13 when this came out and felt like a bit of a socially awkward misfit who was unsure about her identity, in the pressurised secondary school social environment, but this song was a safety blanket away from all of that teenage confusion  I remember Glee S2 containing an episode called 'Born This Way' too - the kids singing this song with t-shirts depicting something 'different' about them is probably one of the most iconic images to come out of that series.

Thankfully I did have a tight knit group of friends who were into Gaga too so I got to share the whole experience of the build up and single release with them, what a time to be alive! I can vividly picture listening to this in several different locations - with friends in the lecture theatre, the music video coming on in the school gym, spamming it at my grandma's house... an era that I truly treasured! I remember being on Twitter the day it premiered too and 'Express Yourself' trending due to the similarities

Express Yourself trends on Twitter as many compare the song to Madonna’s hit single

Is Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' a Rip-Off of Madonna's 'Express Yourself'?

FEBRUARY 11, 2011

Lady Gaga's new single "Born This Way" debuted this morning, after months of hype. To say that the musical world is excited for Gaga's new song—which she will perform this Sunday at the Grammys—is an understatement (a local D.C. radio station has pledged to play it at the top of the hour every hour for the rest of the day).

How does it sound? Pretty familiar, actually. Many music critics are noticing the similarities between "Born This Way" and Madonna's hit "Express Yourself." As The Guardian points out, the comparisons have even propelled "Express Yourself" to a trending topic on Twitter. The publication, however, thinks Gaga's song is more of a loving nod to her pop star predecessor than a direct rip-off:

There's also some spoken-word bits a la the Material Girl (as no one calls her any more), but it doesn't sound copycat, more a knowing nod and a cute wink.

Pop Buzz! blog also thinks there are striking differences between the two tracks:

I can't deny the similarities are striking between the two, but the up tempo beat and added techno sounds does give 'Born This Way' a distinct difference. Plus, Gaga's lyrics are much better, sorry Madonna.

Are the songs too similar? Decide for yourself.

Do you remember this trend happening? Did you think it was similar or a rip-off? What about now, can you see what the fuss is about 10 years on?

I can sort of hear the similarities but I don't think it's as glaring as everyone made out at the time. The choruses are a different tempos for one.

Agreed. I can definitely see some similarities but it's not enough for me to not enjoy both.

And being compared to Madonna's is certainly not a bad thing!

'Born This Way' is my favourite of the two. It undeniably helped me through so much and its explosive energy is still so exhilarating

It certainly isn't no bad thing, and I think I was most happy at the time that Madonna was getting some recognition!

I prefer 'Born This Way' too, although 'Express Yourself' tops it music video wise.

Madonna mashing up the two songs on tour with 'She's Not Me'.. she was never subtle was she?

I thought that was pretty funny tbf. :heehee: I don't think either Gaga or Madonna took the 'feud' over the songs that seriously, but played upon it for the laughs.

My favourite album of all time. So many treasured memories associated with that entire album campaign.

10 years...where has time gone?
