Hi all! I've been toying with the idea of running a record of the decade contest, pretty much an exact copy of the record of the decade contest that is run annually in the UK chart forum but instead here the focus would be on the 1990s. An example of the chart forum one is here if you're not already familiar with it.

It would be quite a large undertaking so I'm looking to see whether anyone would be interested in the concept and be willing to organise and host it? Whilst I do think it could be really fun, I think the main sticking point is whether any of us are likely to have the time to run the event... so it would be good to get a sense of whether you'd like to see this happen in the forum and, if so, whether you'd be interested in helping run it at some point this year.

Yes I am interested in the concept, and I think you should co-host it if possible with some other 90s music experts on the site.

I've often thought about how to do this! Would be a perfect fit for the decade forums if we can get it running, obviously maybe not the 00s one right now as I feel over the years we went through those years quite a bit with normal ROTD, but a 90s one would be a really good way to revisit a bunch of hits from then.

If we can get a few people on board to make it easier to host and don't worry about rushing through the rounds (space these things out, honestly things I'd change about ROTD if I were starting it right now would be to not run it every year and even one year per week) it shouldn't be too bad. I can probably find the time to help out a bit, I know uh... late 90s music pretty well and I certainly know adding up things for my pains.

Sounds good to me. I'm thinking we'd likely have to promote it in the chart forum too as I'm not sure how many participants we'd have if it was just in here, especially as a large proportion of potential fans of this era are chart posters.

I'm happy to help. I've done this sort of stuff before and I've got the Excel skill😁

I'm not working at the moment so I have the time and the necessary fixation on the 90s.

This is a great idea and very fitting for this forum! I wouldn't call myself a 90s expert but I would definitely be interested in voting/following it. :D

So how is it done? year by year, one year at a time?

and which songs qualify? all top 40 songs?

Usually the format is year by year - we have a nomination round where any single from that year is eligible plus maybe the top 40 best selling ones by default. They don't have to have reached the top 40, the idea is to find out our collective favourites from the era and we shouldn't be limited by what was popular at the time. Then a voting round to decide which tracks qualify for the decade final. Then once all years are complete there is an overall final for the tracks that made it, followed by a countdown of the results.

sounds like a titanic task, especially if there's a nomination round first

I'd thought about one of these like a few months ago when I was helping to run the normal decade one.... well my thought was a 00's one :D

If you need anyone to help just shout - although looks like there are a few volunteers already :)

That's much appreciated, thank you!! I know my own limits and whilst I love the idea, I know I'd never get it completed on my own - let's face it, it takes me ages just to get the next round of the survivors up!

I've actually always been interested in an idea like this and toyed with running it one summer, but I don't think I have time these days. I would definitely take part though.

I will partake and more than happy to run a round or two doing the counting, I'd let the 90s experts do the final result reveals though.

It should be a good chance to discover more older songs I'm not familiar with.

I like the sound of this - the ROTD is one of my favourite parts of Buzzjack each year - I've always thought one for the 90s would be a good idea but it's a lot work. I definitely think some sort of link to the chart forum would make it better.

I'd be happy to help add up some of the results if needed but I'm not the best at commentary etc.

I'll try to remember to partake in this, I've got BJSC hosting coming up though so I won't volunteer here.
