This is slowly growing on me tbh. I'll take this over monstrosities like 'Afterglow' and 'I Don't Care' any day

His best remains 'Castle on the Hill' for me!

I’m actually really liking this on first listen! Definitely in the top half of his singles discography for sure.

I don’t really get the incessant dogpiling Ed gets on here whenever he releases something like sure it’s overexposed and this song isn’t revolutionary but it doesn’t pretend to be. Y’all would be living for this if it was a Bebe Rexha song lol

I find his voice doesn’t really fit the song, it feels too soft and is drowned out by the music. It needs a more powerful voice to really make it a BIG pop song.

His voice has always been too weak for me. If you want a stronger voice and frankly better song to go with a Bronski Beat sample, look no further than Brandon Flowers.

You’re kind of just dismissing differing opinions here. Some of us just don’t like the song and/or Ed in general. I don’t think anyone has come in here to slate it for the lols. And for anyone’s info, I dislike the song and artists like Rita Ora/Bebe Rexha so please don’t tar me with some generalisation brush.

How I wish more people could defend Maroon 5 when the constant dog piling happens.

I don't really get the "omg you would love this I'd it was Bebe rexha or rota ora" - they're not huge stars on the same scale as Ed and a lot of people have actually fairly critiqued him/this song. Have we really not moved on to "omg buzzjack hates all male artists!!!11" when that has been proved time and time again to not be true and actually one of the only forums to actually have the likes of Ed in their favour.
I don't know what BuzzJack you're reading if you think Ed is 'in favour' on here frankly, his name is constantly brought up in a negative light even in conversations that have nothing to do with him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (maybe it's a little less so outside the chart forum but the anti Ed circlejerk is beyond tiring in there)

I don't think it's anti Ed at all, go to other forums, certain Twitter circles and it's waaaay worse. I haven't seen that many people be like omg worst thing ever or not offer constructive critiques at all. Obviously there is always going to be the odd exception but that's the same with everything.

I personally can appreciate the song as being catchy and chart friendly etc, I get why people like it. It's just hollow for me, personally, in the sense that he could easily be a much more interesting artist and is very talented, but chooses this path.

I like the track, it's catchy and I appreciate that it's different to Ed's usual style, though I wish the production built more as it goes on. I'll play it quite a bit I think! I agree that it's somewhat hollow though - it feels crafted specifically to be a big global #1 single and therefore it lacks the spark that a song like this should really have. It's better than I Don't Care (decent but both artists are capable of so much better, both before and after that song came out) but not as good as Shape of You for me.

I hope the relative underperformance of this on day 1 will make Ed reconsider the game he's playing. He's talented and generally a great songwriter, so he's absolutely capable of writing a cracking song without the charts in the back of his mind while he's doing so - and then the success will follow him. I'm here for bops like this but I'd appreciate them even more if they actually felt more genuine.

I mean if we're comparing BuzzJack to stan Twitter then I guess. But stan Twitter is a complete cesspool of hatred from what I understand  I wouldn't say there are really any artists on BuzzJack who get that level of extreme vitriol (except like 6ix9ine and XXXTENTACION obvz) - in terms of mainstream pop artists I'd be hard pressed to think of another artist who gets such consistently negative reactions from BuzzJack as Ed Sheeran, there are maybe 2 or 3 songs from the last 5 years that were generally liked here. I guess Maroon 5 may be arguably on a similar level. Though ironically I, as historically probably the most avid hater of Maroon 5 on here, actually think their latest material has been mostly fairly decent lol

edit: and Jessie J if we count her as mainstream still lol

I wouldn't make the 'BuzzJack would like this more if it was by [x female artist]' claim about most of his songs (hence my post acknowledging it as a cliché) but I genuinely feel like the shoe fits here, it's a pretty radical change of pace for Ed instrumentally. Of course if that's down to people not liking how Ed's voice sounds over it then fair enough.

But I don’t see why it’s such a problem that we express ourselves. All of the negative comments in this thread have been critiquing the song and Ed’s general approach to his music. Even most of the positive posts have been along the lines of ‘I like it but it’s basic and lazy’. So I don’t think any of the opinions here should be described as a ‘circlejerk’.

My issues with Ed are mainly that I think he’s severely overrated and there are artists doing what he does better and not getting the recognition. Jack Garratt is just one example. I find Ed very insincere and songs like this don’t help with that impression.

Bre, your preference of Maroon 5’s crappy new music to their classic old stuff is a different issue. One problem at a time x

I think it's more to the type of star he is, someone like Bebe Rexha does throwaway pop/dance songs, she's not trying to be innovative or anything where I feel like Ed is. So yes, I would like it more by her on that basis.

Like I said, the "negative" reactions you see are critiques on a fair basis and I'm sure the likes of you and others would be quick to critique or hate on Rita Ora etc. - I'm really struggling to see why it's such an issue, no one has been nasty!

It's not the posts in here that I am calling a tiring circlejerk, it's more like stuff in the chart forum where any discussion of chart rule changes (real or hypothetical) will almost invariably have someone chiming in with some spiel about how big bad Ed Sheeran will obviously find a way to exploit or get around it.

(and my point isn't that people can't post negative opinions, I think you have misconstrued me a bit here - I'm just responding to the claim that Ed is 'in favour' on BuzzJack which seems pretty objectively false)

What do you expect in the chart forum though? They used to be called iloons for a reason, lots of poster in there fall apart of a track has been top 5 for 3 weeks.

Ed may not be in favour on here per se, but I’d say this thread is evenly spread which certainly puts him in a more favoured light on this site than Maroon 5 or Jess Glynne.

If that is what you meant then I completely concede that point but just saying that seems more like an argument for BuzzJack having a basic standard of decency compared to other parts of the Internet (i.e. that even the most disliked artists on here are still generally discussed in good faith) than any argument about Ed Sheeran personally

Truly a glowing endorsement :kink:

Jess Glynne has done something that warrants the hate tho :P as for Maroon 5... well what can I say the vaccine can't cure every loss of taste x

also comparing Buzzjack to Stan Twitter is like comparing Versace to the local dumpster; at least people on Buzzjack think with their brains.

See I don’t see what the difference is between people disliking Ed and expressing so and your comments here. It’s pure hypocrisy on your part.

I have actually liked some of Ed's music and liked Afterglow a lot. It was a sweet little song. However, he has ability to write smash hits to everyone and he is pretty much in favour in the UK music industry. And I know he is capable of creating something very special and it bothers me that ALL he sees is a chart success. He looks at where the bar is and then barely leaps over it. I Don't Care is the most horrible example of that (Shape of You copycat with Bieber added for maximum success).

The No 6 project had some nice moments, but overall it felt very hollow ego projects to listeners. It was like "look at all these people I'm friends with! (but it is not a proper album!!!)" He and Taylor have lots of in common in that sense but at least Taylor seem to address all this energy towards making cohesive albums and writing inspiring melodies without using familiar elements so much that it turns into plagiarism.

It's just really boring! And the video is doing way too much to make him look more charismatic than he is. It's all just falling a bit flat.

Just dropping in to say that I like this song x

My earlier comment still stands but it’s grown on me a lot. It’s a reasonable progression from his No 6. Collaborations album while still being typically Ed

I am very excited to see the chart thread hate every Friday though

I like it, but I feel like it's a very watery beige version of what it could be, like this really needs a remix to come alive. It needs some buildup/progression throughout the song, once you've heard the first chorus you've heard the whole song unfortunately. I just wish he went even further down the dance route and went for it in the production, this sounds like it's trying to toe the line between both and doing neither that well! It's not awful at all, but I do agree this will probably age quite quickly and not be an Ed 'classic', glad to see he's not sailing to #1 when he can do much better!
