Better Man review by Bobby Blakey Throughout the years there have been a ton of biographical films focusing on the careers of musicians and bands. Within them there are a select few that took a more

I'm hoping the US numbers help it along a little, although I don't know how long it can run in theatres before they replace it. Only a few weeks I think.

There's still more to come though -I feel it's a marathon not a sprint. See what the next few weeks reveal.

I read somewhere recently that the average screening was 2.4 weeks before a movie goes to streaming platform but I guess that depends on how successful the ticket sales are

Completely off topic- I hope something comes of his self awareness. He could be such a good ambassador for a mental wellbeing charity. With his eloquency, he could add such a lot to the awareness and openness re mental health.

I agree Laura , he has become more vocal & confident in speaking about it in recent years .

Do we believe that if this was a conventional film with an actor it would have done better? They should have re-introduced him during the production so that once the film opened there could have been some current reference of Robbie.

George Michael fine, ok. But the Geri Halliwell reference there is a bit strange. He definitely has the same profile in the UK as her and would people in Britain ''stampede'' for a Geri Halliwell/Spice Girls film? I don't think so, I think this journalist is outdated in his views on British pop culture.

People forget that now both Robbie and Take That have over DOUBLE the sales of the Spice Girls in Britain, over a much longer period.

Edited by nirvanamusic

Robbie is currently trending on X in the music category. About 5k posts. Mostly people who enjoyed the movie getting attacked that it is payed adds and vice versa. People who don't know who Robbie Williams getting called out.

This is going on for weeks now 🤦‍♂️

I am posting the fill article here so folk can read it without translating . Interesting that 56% of the audience was male, I am not surprised at that really as I always thought the posters for Better Man had a more male orientated feel to them than female hence why the movie may not have appealed to a female audience . I did say in my review that my nephews wife was not that in awe of Robbie being represented by a monkey & she has been to his concerts etc & while she is not an avid fan she does like his songs & him as a performer .

Really good article nirvanamusic, thanks for posting ....

Den Of Thieves 2: Pantera’ Delivering Lionsgate First No. 1 Win Since 2023’s ‘Hunger Games: Songbirds & Snakes’ With $15.5M; ‘Better Man’ Bombs With $1M – Sunday AM Box Office Update

SUNDAY AM WRITETHRU after Saturday update…Lionsgate can relish a No. 1 win in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera this weekend which is now on its way to $15.5M opening, which is $300K more than the start of the 2018 original. Let’s hear it for great dating.

The studio known for counterprogramming found a great release date on the schedule and maximized it. The results here are better than 3-day of Gerard Butler‘s last movie with Lionsgate, 2023’s Plane ($10.2M 3-day, $11.8M 4-day).

It’s interesting to note that the LA market, which is still under siege from the wildfires, still turned out a solid 8% of the nation’s business which is part with its 52-week norm of 7.9%. Los Angeles generated 10.4% of the box office for Den of Thieves 2, which is more than the market did for the opening weekend of the original Den of Thieves with 9.3%. Note the LA market in box office speak goes as far north as Santa Barbara, includes the O.C., and as far East as San Bernardino.

A third of the audience was between 25-34 years old, which was the largest demo, while, 52% of the audience was over 35. No Imax on the sequel, but PLFs are driving 31% of the business. Best markets are in the South, South Central, West and Midwest with Harkins Estrella Falls leading the way with over $41K through Saturday.

In PostTrak exits those attending Den of Thieves 2 were largely frequent moviegoers with 23% attending at least once a week and 37% attending once or twice a month. Close to a third of the audience, which was largely male at 63%, came with a spouse or partner. A majority of moviegoers seeing this film bought their tickets same day at 76%.

Of those buying tickets, 46% came for Gerard Butler, while 29% came because the movie is part of a franchise they love.

Social media universe for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera spanning X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok, counts 108.4M which is in the vicinity of STX/Miramax’s The Gentlemen (104M), which opened to $10.6M during pre-Covid 2020. The sequel is further boosted by 50 Cent’s social media reach, who starred in the first film and produces here. He’s activated with 119.3M fans as well as Butler with 13.1M and O’Shea Jackson at 1.5M. Overall the influencer campaign developed content with nine content creators including Harry Mack yielding over 12M views.

Says RelishMix on the chatter, “Convo on Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is running positive as many fans of the original 2018 film excitedly anticipate the story’s return with viewers finding similarities in other popular crime movies, comments include, ‘Just watched the first one for the first time yesterday, was seriously impressed. This trailer has Fast and the Furious 8 vibes,’ and, ‘I love robbery movies and Den of the Thieves 1 is such an under rated movie. Big fan of The Town.’ The new direction for the sequel has piqued the interest of many, with fans writing, ‘If Nick really has swapped sides this is gonna be epic,’ while newcomers are being enticed with the trailer: ‘Hmm. Looks good. I did not see part one. I’ll check both of them out when this drops.'”

Other beats of the marketing campaign including a rewatch component which revived interest in the original film. The Ringer’s Rewatchables Podcast revisited the original film with a live audience marked a first-of-its-kind partnership for a film campaign. This highly curated experience offered fans a unique opportunity to revisit the original film and promote Den of Thieves: Pantera. Also collaborating with the studio’s paid media and home entertainment teams, the studio promoted the title as a Black Friday steal on Fanflix for $1.10 – a tie-in with the film’s release date. Partnering with MAX, Lionsgate brought the film back to streaming, securing Den of Thieves as a top-performing title on the platform.

Partner collaborations also included a never-been-done partnership with Paul Sheer’s How Did This Get Made podcast.

Given the pic’s high speed chases, the filmmakers created a heist driving experience at Porsche Experience Centers in Los Angeles and Atlanta where filmmakers and talent hosted press and influencers and leveraged the fanship of Porsche and the pic franchise around the globe.

Officially opening this weekend after an exclusive Academy run back in December is Roadside Attractions’ pick-up of Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl starring Pamela Anderson at 870 theaters. The movie grossed $620K on Friday for a $1.5M 3-day. Last Showgirl counts two SAG noms this week for Pamela Anderson lead actress and Jamie Lee Curtis supporting actress. With Curtis and Anderson on the late night circuit, the movie, which has been buzzed about by awards for voters for months, is finally getting into the national word of mouth.

‘Better Man‘

Paramount’s expansion of Better Man (which I’ve recently learned the studio co-financed their pick-up cost of $25M) is unfortunately tanking with $1.05M despite notching great audience exits (83% on PostTrak, 63% definite recommend). The pic’s lackluster exclusive release over the holiday ($3K per theater, yikes) said it all despite Paramount believing in this movie throughout festival season and giving it an awards season push. The pic’s song “Forbidden Road” getting pulled from the Academy’s short list didn’t help.

Also, an indicator that Better Man was bound to bomb here was the fact that it fell on its face in its UK homeland with just under $5M to date where pop star Robbie Williams is known. If the movie was going to work anywhere, it was there. I’m told he isn’t exactly George Michael as far as reputation goes over there, or even Geri Halliwell (that’s Ginger Spice for you, the Spice Girls unfaithful), hence no stampede. He’s certainly not Harry Styles on this side of the pond.

Despite a reach of 101M on social media for the film, buzz was negative according to RelishMix: “There are those who find the creative liberty to be unnecessary and irritating. Primarily, many are shocked there is a film being made and centered around Robbie Williams, considering his fame is outdated. His irrelevance is making it difficult for many audiences to care about the film: ‘Why does this exist? Has anyone cared about or heard anything from Robbie Williams since the ‘90s?’ Others are highly distracted by the lead being a monkey, ‘It seems like a great idea, but I just can’t take it seriously with Cesar from Planet of the Apes as the lead’ and ‘I always wondered what would happen if we started running out of ideas for movies, and I think this just answered it.'”

What provoked Paramount execs to buy this movie? Essentially, they were bowled over by the story and Michael Gracey’s filmmaking, and yet knew it was a stretch. The gut gamble? The chance that at the very least Better Man would become a cult title with dividends in the downstream, particularly Paramount+. In addition, Paramount was in business with Gracey on the feature take of the Jessica Townsend novel, Nevermoor. At the end of the day, we can’t entirely say that Paramount was irresponsible in their spend. Leave it to a streamer and they would have blown over $100M for Better Man with even more downside.

Men at 56% largely showed up for this movie in which Williams is played by a CGI monkey with 52% of the audience over 25, and largest demo being 25-34 at 28%. Diversity demos were 65% Caucasian, 18% Latino and Hispanic, 8% Black, 7% Asian, and 2% other. Any cash made by Better Man can be found in the West, Mountain and South regions with AMC Disney Springs the highest grossing venue in the nation with $4K through Saturday (eeeek). Paramount had better luck this weekend with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 racing past the two century mark stateside, the movie already the highest grossing in the franchise.

Other notables:

A24’s multi Golden Globe winning The Brutalist expanded into 68 total locations this weekend (+65 from last week) with some pretty good ticket sales. Friday delivered $400K on its way to a 3-day of $1.38M (theater average of $16,1K). The movie was made for under $10M before A24 acquired it out of Venice.

Amazon MGM Studios’ Nickel Boys expanded in its fifth frame to 26 theaters (from last weekend’s eight) including NYC, LA, DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Nashville, Philly and Toronto with pretty good numbers after a Friday of $34K, 3-day of $112K, and running total of $578K.

Bleecker Street’s Hard Truths from Mike Leigh with 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, 15+ award wins, and positive word of mouth opened to $165,6K this weekend in 22 locations for $7,5K theater average.

Overall weekend is $77.9M, which is 20% from a year ago because it was MLK weekend when Mean Girls opened to $28.6M (over 3-days). The first 12 days of 2025 are estimated to be around $285.8M, still 22% ahead of last year.

The chart is updating…:

Notables

Better Man (Par) 1,291 (+1,285) theaters, Fri $560K Sat $295K Sun $195K 3-day $1.05M, Total $1.1M/Wk 3

FRIDAY PM: Lionsgate looks to celebrate this weekend with their first No. 1 opening since November 2023’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera which is currently seeing a $14M+ opening with room for upside. You’ll remember the Santa Monica, CA-based studio wasn’t exactly jumping into piles of cash last year in a slate that was starving for tentpoles. Friday is $5.5M-$6.5M on Pantera. For Gerard Butler, it reps his first No. 1 opening since August 2019’s Angel Has Fallen ($21.3M). Lionsgate has PLF and motion seats on Den of Thieves 2.

We’ll know as the weekend plays out how bad LA is with around a dozen closures; in total about 84 including those impacted by winter conditions in Texas.

Lionsgate inherited Den of Thieves 2 via their acquisition of eOne (which owned Sierra/Affinity). Their exposure on the $40M sequel after foreign sales is $15M with another mid $20M P&A being spent. Tucker Tooley co-financed the sequel with eOne and oversaw the segue of the title from STX to eOne. The studios has made a reported business out of these meat and potatoes action dude movies with upside in the PVOD windows and beyond. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be releasing them. Early Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak exits last night are at 72% positive, 3 1/2 stars with 64% men, 79% over 25.

Paramount Pictures

Paramount’s wide break of Better Man is not looking sexy at $1M from 1,291 sites. The studio acquired the Michael Gracey directed movie for $25M including France and Japan territories.

Mufasa crossed the half billion mark at the global box office this AM. Moana 2 yesterday clocked $971.1M worldwide, overtaking Despicable Me 4 ($969.1M) as the No. 3 global release of 2024 and 13th highest grossing animated title of all-time.

Rest of the top 5 is as follows:

Den of Thieves 2 (LG) 3,008 theaters, Fri $5.5M-$6.5M, 3-day $14M+/Wk 1

Mufasa (Dis) 3,620 theaters, Fri 3M, 3-day $13M (-44%), Total $188.5M/Wk 4

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Par) 3,582 theaters, Fri $2.3M, 3-day $9.2M (-57%), Total $202.7M/Wk 4

Nosferatu (Foc) 3,082 theaters, Fri $2M, 3-day $6.8M (-48%), Total $81.8M/Wk 3

Moana 2 (Dis) 3,170 theaters, Fri $1M 3-day $4.8M (-61%), Total $433.1M/Wk 7

FRIDAY AM: Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera made $1.35M yesterday from showtimes that began at 6PM, a figure that’s ahead of the $950K previews of the original 2018 movie by +42%, but under last year’s other guy meat and potatoes movie, The Beekeeper which did $2.4M in overall previews ($1.5M strictly in its Thursday) on its way to a $16.5M 3-day.

Previews for Den of Thieves 2 are also higher than that of Gerard Butler’s Plane back in January 2023 which did $625K on its way to $3.5M Friday and $10.2M 3-day.

Den of Thieves 2 is expected to open between $11M-$13M at 3,008 in what is a soft early January frame. Part of that has to do with the offerings here, however, business is certain to be slow in the No. 1 market of the country, LA, due to the wildfires. Of 14 cinemas that were closed, two reopened: The AMC Americana in Glendale and the AMC Topanga 12 in Canoga Park. Prime LA venues AMC Century City, AMC Burbank and AMC Grove remain open. Den of Thieves 2 could get beat by Mufasa or Sonic the Hedgehog 3 which are looking to do about the same.

The previous movie was released by STX when it was in its full glory. The sequel here with Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. returning as well as director Christian Gudegast, isn’t part of STX’s output deal with Lionsgate. Foreign sales for the sequel were announced at Cannes 2019 by Sierra/Affinity. Why a sequel? The first movie overperformed its single digit opening in January 2018 to $15.2M and wound up with $44.9M domestic and $80.5M worldwide.

Part two sees Big Nick (Butler) back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange. The movie was produced and co-financed by Tucker Tooley, and produced by Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, and Mark Canton.

Deadline’s Pete Hammond enjoyed the sequel, which is 70% fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Other offerings this weekend include the 1,200 theater expansion of Paramount’s biopic about pop star Robbie Williams, Better Man, which isn’t expected to do much in the single digits after an exclusive run that only put up an –eek–$3K to $4k theater average in its first two weekends.

Real shame about Better Man, but understandable. It is a very well made, emotional, entertaining and unconventional movie. It will find its audience on streaming.

Back during the late 90’s and 00’s Robbie williams was massive in the uk! But hasn’t been for last 15 years, hasn’t really been in the limelight much either.

I think all the girls who fancied him grew up and found him too cocky and self involved.

I’m surprised that they’ve given it such a wide release in the states as it really was only uk him and the original band take that were popular.

The documentary on Netflix was fine. He did not need a movie.

Nobody cares about Robbie Williams.

Thats why its flopping. Who thought making a biopic about him was a good idea.

Making a biopic about Robbie Williams and especially making him a monkey is probably the dumbest idea ever. It’s only rivaled by the recent Pharrell Williams Lego movie which flopped even though it cost only 16 million.

It’s a shame BETTER MAN will barely make a ripple at the box office, it’s a hugely entertaining movie.

I’m sure it’s great, but I’m surprised it got any kind of US release at all. Robbie Williams didn’t exactly take this country by storm like Oasis or The Beatles.

No. I’m a yank and I haven’t heard of them before the movie. Took a look at their touring history and it seems like I’m not the exception. Williams has absolutely zero clout in the states. Good movie, but another misguided effort by Paramount to get nominations.

They may (and should) get a Best Visual Effects nom and could have gotten Best Song too if not for the latest d*ck move by the music branch. They weren’t really selling this on Robbie Williams in the States, but on “From the director of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN,” hoping for a similar sleeper success. Too bad that isn’t happening.

Hi folks!

Amost haven't been in web today so thanks for posting the news.

Back at home exactly at El Classico (well done, Barca!)

Many emotions in my head today about the movie, sucess or not, further perspectives, etc.

Many of you pointed on very interesting topics what I would like to discuss with you, especially in live, not by web. Interesting mixed feelings during today - up and down and up again.

Now is very late in Moscow = 2 am and need to go to sleep because a very difficult working week is coming.

But I decided to come for a moment when I've seen the new photos of Robbie with her daughter in New Yourk during special Q&A session earlier today!

It happened 3 hours after my 4th time of screening of Better Man with my friends today.

As I told you some theaters finally show it in original language so it was my first time to watch the movie in English.

Guys, it's even better! I heard Robbie's voice and it's already another story!! Was a little bit difficult with Northern English accent in the beginning but all is fine in the end.

1rw.png

I don't get tired of the film at all.

I'm very proud that Robbie's movie is the best movie of 2024.

How many details I've found during all these screenings... every time I find new a new interesting easter eggs and clever parts.

The film helps me at the moment.

There are some internal experiences and doubts, but the film is like those Robbie's pills in the film.

I want to say BIG thanks to Michael Gracey for this healing feeling. It makes a lot for me.

Many times in my life Rob helped me emotinally in the very important moments.

Now again. With a big help of Mr Gracey.

I really don't understand how he felt Robbie so good and how he found this chemistry between them and between all parts of the story in Better Man.

For me it reminds me only one chemistry - Robbie & Guy.

I think Robbie and Michael can continue their collaboration and I would be very happy if he would help him with some music videos or so.

While Robbie's team is strong, his team is older than before and he needs an INPUT of fresh people around him. New visions and his image.

So, don't worry about Box Office. Film will be OK with money response in the end (in Box or Streaming - doesn't matter) but it's a kind of magic and the last time I felt IT when I heard Bodies on radio.

p.s. I have answers on 'strange' Take That songs in the movie, 'strange' Land Of 1000, many other points... But let me do it when all of you will watch the movie. It's fully deserved be a cult movie not only for fans.

p.p.s I'm sorry for this chaotic message. It's because of a lot of mixed feelings in my head today.

Yes, I think it would have sold better here in the U.K. without the monkey. It is very rare

for films to do well without star performers in lead parts and having the main character be CGI robs the film of that.

The monkey is not attractive to look at, and does not get across Robbie’s charisma.

That is no slight on Weta or Jonno, who have done fine work, but it’s just not visually appealing.

You get used to it after 10 minutes but the trailers only last for 4 minutes.

Also you miss out on the charisma of an actor playing the part.

Basically the mainstream audience that usually goes to biopics for a bit of nostalgia and relive the

heyday of their favourite artist is not going to show up if they don’t recognise the lead.

Michael Gracey kept saying that Robbie is not visually iconic but he absolutely is if you were a teenager in the 90s!

Also I have seen a lot of people attribute the monkey to Robbie’s ego and narcissism.

The conclusions people leapt to are:

So he can play himself

Because he couldn’t bear to have a hot young actor playing him

And he does himself no favours by describing himself as a narcissist all the time!

He is not actually a narcissist! Narcissists do not spend their time running themselves down!

There’s also the ‘why does he deserve a biopic’ thing. People have a weird thing about biopics

being celebrations of culturally significant or relevant artists, and not just interesting stories about people.

Again, Rob and Michael Gracey constantly talking down his talent was not at all helpful.

I like to read your analysis, Katheryn. The discussion about Rob being a legend or not is one I do not understand since I became a fan. Why is George Michael more a legend, Rod Stewart? I also think that the coquettish way of using terms like 'narcissism' was not helpful. The monkey part I understand as I disliked this as only bit from the start but understood it as trigger, which unfortunately did not pan out.

I just read it will open on the 27th of February.

How sweet does Teddy look, so 'normal' considering many celebrity daughters looking far older due to their make up and dresses

Again, why such a long wait?

It is intentional. Staggered release to allow the positive word of mouth to spread. Some big European countries are getting a release only next week.

It is one of the most bizarre marketing campaigns I've ever seen.
