Posted March 30, 20214 yr Does anybody happen to have an exhaustive list of these, and maybe a reason as to why they climbed if there is one. I'm guessing there can't be that many - especially after 1998 when climbing to a new peak after entry was incredibly rare until downloads were introduced in 2005. Polyhex is down so it's been more fiddly to compile than usual on the OCC site. I can just about remember the No.1s in this period that climbed to their peak (not including stuff like Three Lions which climbed back to its peak, or all the imports that 'climbed' from low down after a full release). Although I may have missed some: Gina G - Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit (1996 - Eurovision week hype propelled her to No.1) Spice Girls - Wannabe (1996 - immense growing publicity and buzz around them and this song helped them to the top) Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's (1996 - not sure about this, a slower grower/growing airplay perhaps?) Tori Amos - Professional Widow (1997 - guessing this benefitted from the new year lull when the Christmas chart records were slipping away) R Kelly - I Believe I Can Fly (1997 - film hype/increased airplay?) Aqua - Barbie Girl (1997 - they were never going to beat Spice Up Your Life on week 1) All Saints - Never Ever (1998 - took advantage of the new year lull after a long run in the top 10) The Tamperer feat Maya - Feel It (1998 - not sure why this went to No.1 after a few weeks, there was talk at the time about the odd lyrics so maybe that plus a slow release schedule enabled it to slip through) Steps - Heartbeat/Tragedy (1999 - Tragedy becoming 'the song' of New Year 1999 parties, plus taking advantage of the new year lull after a long run in the top 10) Cliff Richard - The Millennium Prayer (1999 - the hype around this was huge iirc due to his usual record label not wanting to release it) DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide (2004 - this ran into Toxic on its first week, so I guess climbed to the top because that declined faster) Edited March 30, 20214 yr by gooddelta
March 30, 20214 yr Macy Gray's 'I Try' always springs to mind as it climbed week on week which was so rare for a song from that era
March 30, 20214 yr Leann Rimes How Do I Live longevity was a rarity around this time I recall as it kept a yo-yo chart run
March 30, 20214 yr This is a very interesting one. Up to and including the current chart, I have 35620 entries making the Top 75. I caveat with that in that each entry gets it's own TrackID, so it's this which has been the "link" to sort this out. 16537 entries (14 Nov 1952 to 3 Apr 2021) have climbed from their entry position. March 30, 20214 yr Author Macy Gray's 'I Try' always springs to mind as it climbed week on week which was so rare for a song from that era Yes that was another one that came on in the car yesterday and I recalled its slow and strange inch up the lower half of the top 10. Shame Better Off Alone by DJ Jurgen/Alice Deejay never quite managed to go all the way to No.1. It went 4-3-2 in 1999 but then stalled behind a few different No.1s, just a few hundred copies adrift of Westlife one week. Another one I thought of was Fly On The Wings Of Love by XTM, such a strange run: 9-8-12-9-8-9-11-10-8-10-12 etc...eight weeks in the top ten despite peaking at No.8 is quite the feat now, let alone back in 2003!
March 30, 20214 yr outkast hey ya is one of the most memorable for me, but at the time i'm not really sure why it rebounded? i know that good charlotte's lifestyles of the rich and famous did something like 12-20-8 from memory which was v unusual at the time too.
March 30, 20214 yr Author This is a very interesting one. Thanks for this, very interesting to see! Forgot about Mark Morrison, Fugees, Chef and Bob The Builder of the No.1s! It's particularly interesting to see some of the songs lower down, especially the likes of Jewel and Third Eye Blind - you think that upward momentum would have continued for them, both were huge in the US. It's crazy how few there were in 2001 - for the big hits you literally were done after the first week in terms of peaking, save for a couple of examples.

I think Hey Ya may have got lost a bit during the 2003 Christmas rush after debuting decently and then airplay picked up in early 2004, plus a lack of other hot new releases around helped it get a second wind. And then it just took off from there. Cannot recall at all what happened with that Good Charlotte song, very strange indeed! Also Baha Men's Who Let The Dogs out going 13-14-2 was slightly bizarre, what happened on the third week - was it after Top Of The Pops or something?
March 30, 20214 yr I think the answer for many of them will be that they were released "too early". The aim was to get biggest first week sales as possible so you held off for as long as possible, doing all your TV apperarances ahead of the release etc and waiting till every man and his dog knew you had a single coming out. But sometimes singles with hit potential hadn't quite reached saturation point at the time of release, so you might enter a bit lower than expected, but high enough to continue to grow at radio and people would continue to discover the track. I always thought this was a better tactic as you "lost" fewer sales by not being available earlier, and staying in the chart longer might mean that you actually sell more copies in the long run. Another one is that a single might sell better than expected in week 1 and run into supply issues. Stacie Orrico's Stuck is one I know about. I heard that the label were expecting it to only go top 30 but it started selling out midweek, which caused to enter at 11. It climbed to 9 the following week once it had been restocked. I suspect Kaci's I Think I Love You may have been a similar kind of thing!

Also Baha Men's Who Let The Dogs out going 13-14-2 was slightly bizarre, what happened on the third week - was it after Top Of The Pops or something? Baha Men was a funny one! Somehow that week I'd managed to miss the midweeks on Dotmusic and CD:UK so had no idea it was going to happen. Listening to the top 40 in the car and after U2 had slipped to 3 I knew Steps were left to play but couldn't think what the other record left was. Was very surprised to hear the Baha Men climb! TOTP might have helped but I wouldn't be surprised if that was another one that was held back at the start by the stores underestimating demand.
March 30, 20214 yr Leann Rimes How Do I Live longevity was a rarity around this time I recall as it kept a yo-yo chart run Though interestingly never managed to climb beyond its week one entry position!
March 30, 20214 yr Also Baha Men's Who Let The Dogs out going 13-14-2 was slightly bizarre, what happened on the third week - was it after Top Of The Pops or something? I remember that suddenly became a HUGE thing everyone at school was obsessed with around the point it blew up (and subsequently went on for months, I was sick of hearing people saying the chorus in the end  ) so I don't know if it became a country-wide phenomenon in a similar way?
March 30, 20214 yr 1996-01-20 - 11 - 35 - 7 - Upside Down - Change Your Mind - a BBC documentary about their formation was aired the week after they charted 1996-01-27 - 15 - 21 - 6 - Ace Of Base - Beautiful Life - I remember getting to about 17 on the chart and thinking "oh no it's fallen out the top 40".. was so happy it had climbed! 1996-04-06 - 1 - 6 - 25 - Gina G - Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit - apart from Eurovision hype, she was on TOTP 6 times before she even hit number 1, which must have helped! 1997-01-18 - 2 - 10 - 15 - No Mercy - Where Do You Go - aside from being January, again I think their TOTP (and National Lottery) performances helped. They were excellent live and really lifted the song.

Yeah I'd agree with this... you used to essentially get different levels of promotion - so you'd have the big pop bands etc promoting heavily on all sorts of shows ahead of release and that would translate to immediate high sales. Then you'd have other tracks, such as Macy Gray, Outkast, Junior Senior etc that wouldn't have had quite the same level of committed fanbase purchases and promotion that would regularly enter lower but continue to sell as airplay increased and people got to know more about the act.
March 30, 20214 yr James Masterton said at the time that the weird chart run for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous had been attributable to barcode problems preventing some early sales registering correctly. Also it was a pretty dead week when it moved 20-8.
March 30, 20214 yr Also Baha Men's Who Let The Dogs out going 13-14-2 was slightly bizarre, what happened on the third week - was it after Top Of The Pops or something? Music Week cited Top of the Pops as the main factor for its climb: http://scans.chartarchive.org/UK/2000/UK%2...02000.10.28.pdf
March 30, 20214 yr I think a few from the late 90’s and early 2000’s charted on import sales, hence massive they’re climb up when they were officially released in the UK.
March 30, 20214 yr Music Week cited Top of the Pops as the main factor for its climb: http://scans.chartarchive.org/UK/2000/UK%2...02000.10.28.pdf That's quite surprising that TOTP was the reason for its climb. I've been watching some of the old TOTP 1990 re-runs that are being shown, and I've actually noticed that a performance doesn't usually result in much of an boost for the song on the next chart. Quite often a song actually falls the week after, which I find really odd given how popular TOTP was back then!

Weird that No Mercy released the song in January when it is so summery sounding.
