HAHAHA at how badly this has fallen on its ass! What a crazy evening of news, so much going on all at once.

And Woodward is gone hallelujah! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Extremely glad and reassured that fan power/pressure has put pay to this ridiculous idea.

And for the record I do think there will be some form of "Super League" within the next 10 or so years but ANYTHING that's a complete elitist set-up where any competitors are untouchable is a massive no no.

Cannot believe how faceless & spineless these owners were. Yeah can understand them not addressing the fans (and even not uttering a single word to the media for that matter) but to not even let your OWN EMPLOYEES know about it?! That's f***ign disgraceful.

The new Champions League Swiss model is essentially the Super League, only without the governance and control from the bigger clubs. Only its slipped in through the backdoor and will take fans and the media a couple of years to actually realise what it's going to mean..

Yeah reading about it now there's definitely shades of what they were trying to achieve thru this Super League but at least it's adding places rather than taking away. It's not so 'closed door' either which I think was the one biggest bugbear.

It's not closed door, but there are at least two (and I suspect three now) guaranteed VIP places for the bigger clubs. There are not enough midweeks free for all of the extra games to be played either, so that will mean the big clubs either withdraw from the League Cup or fully enter their U23 squads (and won't be allowed past the QFs or something daft).

I totally agree the Super League was unworkable in the current format, but something like that is going to get pushed through.

Knockout stage of Champions League already belongs to 5 countries.

The rebels main mistake was a cancellation of sport results in national leagues. They (or UEFA itself) easily can create something like this possible format.

"Core" 20

England - 5 teams

Spain - 4 teams

Italy - 4 teams

Germany - 4 teams

France - 3 teams

+ maybe will add 4 champions from the rest Europe, based on UEFA rankings. On this moment of time they are Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Belgium.

Something like it will work well and get the support from the majority.

I know it's a stupid idea but really the "Champions League" should be for.... the champions of each country?

Yeh exactly those new rules are ridiculous

It will get support from the majority, but teams are going to be playing extra games, 2 of the Big 6 English clubs that miss out via the domestic league will always qualify and we're going to end up with a similar situation as we have in the European and World Cup qualifiers - Real Madrid and Man City smashing European minnows 5 or 6 nil every year quickly loses it's appeal.

The new format is going to have implications for Domestic Leagues as there aren't enough midweeks free. So either the cups will go, or the bigger teams will pish for something like Project Big Picture again, which I suspect is what will happen again.

Do you then create a Europe wide league then with 4/5 divisions and competition for promotion and relegation or both then, that’s the big question. The smaller leagues wouldn’t be able to afford the travel due to lack of money and professionalism and have a big fa cup style knock out tournament?

That's the problem. A European League with promotion and relegation can only work either if it is limited to a few countries or with several layers with geographical splits starting at the second level.

Yeh I’m not sure about the overall affordability of certain leagues as some leagues we don’t follow much will actually be able to afford travel and do travel quite a bit within their own country it would only be the smallest least developed leagues who wouldn’t find it affordable. Like in NI, them clubs could afford 1 or 2 European away games a season after that it would be difficult and unrealistic to see them playing a league Europe wide in the 6th tier against teams similar to them in Malta, Latvia and Azerbaijan for example but then maybe the money would be great and long term it may be a goal to look towards.

It used to be once upon a time..

The super league furore did at least work in one instance, people are now talking seriously about the future of the game , after this short sharp shock !

The six English clubs which secretly agreed to play in a European Super League will pay £22m to draw a line under their ensuing row with the Premier League.

I think that is a fair punishment. I know rival fans/owners wanted points deductions etc. - but not sure any of those would have stood up in a court as they would most certainly have been appealed. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't as the Premier League needs the Top 6, with Manchester United and Liverpool in particular. Good to see there is a framework if this happens again (which it will).
