Was 5, 6, 7, 8 just not as well received in the UK?

 

It went #1 in Australia and #2 in New Zealand. Maybe it just hit a chord with us.

The major radio stations didn't support it, that's for sure. Maybe their promotion and music TV channel exposure was significant enough to make it a hit? I have to admit I didn't pay them attention at the time, so I'm not completely sure what made it turn into such a long-running hit despite the low-ish peak! It was an incredibly unusual chart performance, considering that most singles peaked in week 1 and would gradually (or quickly) go down the chart.

Some of the singles since scared of the dark have great peaks in Scotland, id have loved those in the UK.
