Ultimately though it has to be a song people are willing to listen to, it's not just because of the challenge. There's been even bigger ones on there where the song has done nothing in the charts.

It's not a sample and it's a bit of a stretch to even call it an 'interpolation' but the 'body-ody' in the chorus is presumably referencing the Megan song (Tion Wayne directly namedrops her in the song as well, although it appears that line was taken out of the remix version).

 

Quite remarkable that 'Body' has become so big worldwide - 'Keisha & Becky' never charted on Spotify anywhere other than the UK and Ireland so it's a huge step up from that to being a top 10 in Aus/NZ and a minor hit in Europe and Canada. Interested to see if it will ever show up anywhere at all in the US, UK rap songs very rarely do but 'Don't Rush' proved that TikTok virality can be enough for them to at least make a small splash there. (Actually just checked and it is at #255 & #1303 on US Apple Music so that's at least something!)

Guess ‘Keisha and Becky’ being pre Tik Tok is the reason. Although think ‘Body’ is a bit catchier than K&B too

Keisha & Becky's remix was released in April 2019, that was around the time we first started having big TikTok hits! Though you can't really guess what will blow up on their anyway
oh they should do a new version with Megan, then they would totally break the US market!!

Having looked up this 'Body' TikTok trend it looks like the person who can be 'blamed' for it getting so big is more the music video director than anyone else, since the trend is based on a transition from the video. (It is a pretty slick transition xx)

 

Some of the YouTube comments on the video from confused Americans are kind of hilarious. Lots of comments along the lines of 'I don't understand what they're saying but it's a banger', as if it's not in English. :lol:

Apparently ArrDee's verse from the remix has gone viral too (there's already a YT compilation of it) which probably explains somewhat the recent massive boost the remix got.

 

 

Inb4 ArrDee becomes a huge name after this, exactly repeating history after the 'Keisha & Becky' remix essentially launched Aitch's career. (as I understand it ArrDee is basically just a bootleg version of Aitch that they probably put on the remix because they wanted to copy the same formula but Aitch himself would never work with Russ again lol)
The start of ArrDee's rap actually reminded me of The Shamen a little bit when he was talking about the 'geezer'. So yay for that.
