June 13, 20214 yr As far as the boyband stakes go I think 5ive were probably the best of their era. Seems odd that they went ahead with releasing against the football anthems though, you would have thought the Cowell/Walsh mindset that rules such boyband projects would have recognised this and moved the release to an 'easier' week.
June 13, 20214 yr Yeah, Got The Feeling was 5ive at their best. So catchy. They were a great boyband... who just happened to be imploding behind the scenes.
June 14, 20214 yr Love all three of those, particularly Carly and Derulo  Five going up against two football anthems was unfortunate!
June 14, 20214 yr labels should know better, this was 5ive's first new material since their debut and an easy #1 if they picked up the right week not sure why they had to release against the football songs, could easily have waited a bit
June 14, 20214 yr Author labels should know better, this was 5ive's first new material since their debut and an easy #1 if they picked up the right week not sure why they had to release against the football songs, could easily have waited a bit It was their third single not their second. Unless you're referring to their album which wasn't out until 3 weeks later
June 14, 20214 yr Author 17. BAGGY TROUSERS- Madness (117,000) #3 No 1 in 22 weeks in 1980 Co-written by Suggs about his schooldays and as an antidote to the version of the childhood portrayed in the (then) current hit “Another Brick In The Wall” by Pink Floyd, this chirpy upbeat number flew out of stores in late 1980. It became one of their 15 top 10 singles between 1979 and 1983 and their equal highest peaking to that point. L2afXCii5n0
June 14, 20214 yr Author 16.SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (67,000) #3 No 1 in 23 weeks in 1988 Originally a No 2 hit in his native Australia in 1987 when it was featured in the “Neighbours” episode where Charlene & Scott married it was only prevented from making the top by Minogue’s own “The Locomotion”. Such was the time delay between airings the episode was finally shown in the UK in November 1988 thrusting the song up the charts to No 3 again denied in part by another Kylie record! eXnQPF8YpVM
June 14, 20214 yr Author 15. CLINT EASTWOOD- Gorillaz (86,000) #4 No 1 in 23 weeks in 2001 Taking its name from the supposed similarity to the theme to “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly” this served as the introductory single to the band and was unfortunate to be released in the strong sales period of March 2001 when million sellers abounded like Shaggy, Atomic Kitten and Hear’Say. This is our highest placed non No 3 hit on the list! xxLWuM_SHcI
June 14, 20214 yr The Angry Anderson record haven’t heard in years. Last time I did it sounded pretty baaad. “Clint Eastwood” a bit like “Beautiful Liar” by Shakira/Beyoncé was one of those massive hits I pretty much exclusively heard the remix on the radio and never heard the original. This one was the Ed Case/Sweetie Irie remix
June 14, 20214 yr 'Baggy Trousers' and 'Clint Eastwood' <3 (once again had no idea the latter had such high sales).
June 14, 20214 yr Adore both Baggy Trousers and Clint Eastwood, both would have made fantastic #1s. The latter was incredibly unlucky to be stuck behind the biggest sellers of the year. Worth noting that Clint Eastwood was actually the 12th biggest seller of 2001 on the Year End list which makes it the second highest ranking non Number 1 of the year behind Teenage Dirtbag!!
June 15, 20214 yr Clint Eastwood  Sounded so refreshing when it was released, completely unlike anything else around at the time
June 15, 20214 yr Once again love all three of those and 'Suddenly' is legit one of my favourite 80s songs ever  I've always had a thing for a good power ballad (see also 'Alone' by Heart and 'Listen To Your Heart' by Roxette) and they don't make power ballads like that any more!
June 15, 20214 yr Author 14. LIVE WHILE WE’RE YOUNG- One Direction (87,008) #3 No 1 in 23 weeks in 2012 Released as a first single from their second album “Take Me Home” there was so much pent up demand that the track took an early lead in the charts but had slipped to No 3 by Sunday. Facing criticism for the song’s theme (something to do with sex apparently) and it’s similarity to “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” didn’t appear to hamper sales, it also opened with the second biggest debut week sales by a UK artist in the US chart (after Elton’s “Candle In The Wind 97”). _LSRHEimv1Y
June 15, 20214 yr Author 13. HANDS UP (GIVE ME YOUR HAND)- Ottawan (116,000) #3 No 1 in 24 weeks in 1981 Whilst it may not be as its more famous brother “D.I.S.C.O” this was still a massive continental hit from Ottawan who were essentially a front for producers Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger. The original “group” were only together for a couple of years before the public face of the group changed on a regular basis. 0bKsxc-S7QM
June 15, 20214 yr Looking at the top 5 on the week One Direction made it to #3, they were pretty far from Rihanna but only 400 copies away from PSY! Adele was a mid-week release... 1 E Diamonds Rihanna (105K) 2 1 Gangnam Style PSY (87.4K) 3 E Live while we’re young One Direction (87.0K) 4 E Skyfall Adele (84K) 5 E Anything could happen Ellie Goulding (49K)
