May 12, 20214 yr I’m another fan of ‘Under Your Thumb’ KR, they produced some great tracks in the early 80s. I’m not a fan of ‘The Birdie Song’ but it was HUGE in 1981 and massive in Europe with holiday makers. Is ‘Love The Way You Lie’ going to be on this? Undeservedly missed the top spot many times! Apart from the Rick song the rest of the top 5 are classics for me. His biggest tracks is Never Gonna Give You Up’ and ‘Together Forever’ for me.
May 12, 20214 yr Rick Astley got a lot of great songs from SAW for his debut but by album 2 he was only getting shitty songs and the best SAW songs were going to Jason Donovan instead :o good he broke free from them, his 1991 single Cry for Help was pretty good
May 12, 20214 yr Author Rick Astley got a lot of great songs from SAW for his debut but by album 2 he was only getting shitty songs and the best SAW songs were going to Jason Donovan instead :o good he broke free from them, his 1991 single Cry for Help was pretty good Not really. Only 4 of the 10 tracks on his second album were by SAW as he had fallen out with them by the Autumn of 1988. Rather famously he rejected "Nothing can divide us" and it ended up with Jason.
May 12, 20214 yr I really think we were related in a past life. *.* <3 (btw forgot to reply to your previous comment - yes will need to share my 80s playlist in the retro forum or something, it's pretty chunky! and free of Birdie Song :magic:) Just remembered that I'm pretty sure 'Got My Mind Set On You' did make it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 - George still smashing in the late 80s!
May 12, 20214 yr I don’t consider Missing You as one of The Saturdays best songs, so I’m not to disappointed it missed out.
May 13, 20214 yr Is ‘Love The Way You Lie’ going to be on this? Undeservedly missed the top spot many times!I believe this thread is only for songs that peaked at #3 or lower, LTWYL wouldn't be eligible since it peaked at #2.
May 13, 20214 yr Missing You is very forgettable among the Saturdays discography, would have been disappointing if that had been their only #1 instead of What About Us. Don't even know that Rick Astley song tbh but the Top 3 in that 1987 are all amazing! I love China In Your Hand but wish George Harrison could have got at least a week at #1, Got My Mind Set On You is just brilliant!
May 13, 20214 yr I believe this thread is only for songs that peaked at #3 or lower, LTWYL wouldn't be eligible since it peaked at #2. Ah no worries thanks!
May 13, 20214 yr Author 911- Bodyshakin (94.3%) W/E 3/5/1997 1- BLOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR- Michael Jackson (83,700) 2- I BELIEVE I CAN FLY- R Kelly (80,000) 3- BODYSHAKIN- 911 (79,000) The king of the comeback finally failed to pull it off! In all three of R Kelly’s weeks at No 1 he had overturned midweek deficit’s to top the survey, this however was the week when it didn’t do enough. 911 were riding high with their biggest hit to date and were indeed no 2 in the midweeks before being beaten at the last, the song itself was co-written by two former members of 80s pop group Dead Or Alive. 8ALugvLWkKY
May 13, 20214 yr Author ELO- Hold On Tight (94.8%) W/E 29/8/1981 1- JAPANESE BOY- Aneka (78,000) 2- TAINTED LOVE- Soft Cell (76,000) 3- HOOKED ON CLASSICS- Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (75,000) 4- GREEN DOOR- Shakin Stevens (74,000) 5- HOLD ON TIGHT- E.L.O (74,000) A VERY tight week in 1981 which resulted in a new number 1 as Shaky got toppled. ELO only managed one chart topper (“Xanadu”) but the track had, at the time, the most expensive promo ever made costing £40,000 (about £156,000 in today’s money). UkekqVPIc2M
May 13, 20214 yr Author CJ Lewis- Sweets For My Sweet (95.7%) W/E 7/5/1994 1- THE REAL THING- Tony Di Bart (47,000) 2- THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD- Prince (46,500) 3- SWEETS FOR MY SWEET- CJ Lewis (45,000) Commented on at the time as the tightest race for No 1 of the 90s, the entire top 5 were within 10% of each other but as all the other players made either No 1 or No 2 ultimately it’s CJ Lewis that ends up in this thread. His reggae update of the Drifters 1961 classic was ALMOST enough to grab the prize. -myamvCUsac
May 13, 20214 yr Looking forward to finding out the highest percentage song in this part of the countdown!
May 13, 20214 yr As boyband tracks go I really like Bodyshakin, definitely think it was the best thing 911 ever did. Deserved to place higher than the abysmal IBICF, how the record buying public allowed this to snatch #1 from Blur/Supergrass I will never know. Even the Robbie song would have been a far better #1. Amazing that there was a week where the #5 was as close to the sales of the #1 as that week in 1981!
May 13, 20214 yr I've never believed that wiki page fact about Hold On Tight's video. The video for Ashes To Ashes by David Bowie from the previous year cost £250,000 to make. I didn't know the single was so close in sales figures to the number 1. One of the singles ahead of it is a sort of ELO spinoff as Louis Clark arranged Hooked On Classics for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Edited May 13, 20214 yr by King Rollo
May 13, 20214 yr I didn't like 911, but I bloody love 'Bodyshakin'. I'd have loved for that to be a number one!
May 13, 20214 yr Wow, had no idea Bodyshakin' came so close, yes it definitely is their signature song and should have been their No.1 over A Little Bit More. They came to my primary school to perform in early 1998 and this song and Party People...Friday Night went OFF in the assembly hall  Impressive they were still doing school tours at that point as they'd amassed quite a string of big hits by then.
May 14, 20214 yr ...although as it isn't it the main countdown, that wouldn't have been enough for #1 in more than 10 weeks of 1997.
