In retrospect this makes the decision to put Malta on 6th rather than 10th-13th even more harsh since they were only second to Ukraine by 13 points in the televote in Semi One (in possibly the toughest semi final ever) but by the close of play at song 26 they'd been forgotten about.
Just had a quick look through the full voting data to see if the UK was anywhere near getting any points. The UK finished 11th in the Polish jury vote :( but that's pretty much the only near miss, the Czech jury put us 13th and all the others (from the jury or the public) were 14th or lower.

Really if you're going to come last at least do it in STYLE, the first ever double zero in the 50/50 split era *.*

France finally clicked with me tonight, but I have to say I'm delighted with an Italian victory, they have been pretty flawless since the year AFTER they returned. But Maneskin really have IT.

San Marino's televote was probably the biggest shock of the night, I'm still in denial that Serhat remains their best result.

Lmao  This was me but like times 30. I go absolutely mental when I'm dancing.

My mom's friend left a status on FB that if Italy wins, she will never watch Eurovision again. Oops.

We finally have an actually good Eurovision winning song by an artist whose name starts with 'Mån' :cheeseblock:
When was the last time the top 3 were not in the English language? (Sorry, I may have missed it already being said aha)

My best guess would be...1995 - back when you had to sing in your own language and Norway, Spain and Sweden were top 3.

Theres nothing quite like the excitement of a ESC vote reveal.

Then of course we’re all too wired to sleep 😭🤣

Oh thanks! I didn't realise that was a rule! I always thought it was optional!

It is indeed! :magic:

I am really happy to see so many non English language entries doing so well - so close to having no English at all in the top 4 even! It was probably for the best for them to drop the requirement to sing in a native language but a very big part of me kind of wishes that was still the rule x

Really loved the contest overall although I thought the Swiss guy was exceptional and gutted he didn’t win. Maybe a bit too serious for a win but definitely will look up more of Gjon’s Tears. Loved Bulgaria too.

I thought winner was poor though - third rate White Stripes rip off although performance was interesting.

I hope that the dropping of the rule and subsequent English flood of entries was a delayed reaction to English entries always doing better, now we've tired of that and it's become more usual for countries sending a song that represents their language and culture and succeeding - even old English-only stalwarts like Ukraine have changed and done well out of it, that it's going to become more usual. More exposure to diversity with increased interconnectivity as well - back in the 90s Eurovision was only just opening up to an until-recently completely divided continent.

on the other end of the spectrum Portugal just got one of their best results of the 21st century with an English song. Hard rules are dropping (except for Greece/Cyprus).

Some further piece of trivia:

Non-English winners since the new rule (1999):

2007 - Serbia (Molitva)

2016 - Ukraine (1944)

2017 - Portugal (Amar pelos dois)

2021 - Italy (Zitti e buoni)

This is definitely a brilliant progress and hope we'll see even more languages next year.

Italy's track record since they returned is fabulous:

2, 9 , 7, 21, 3, 16, 6, 5, 2, 1

I think only Ukraine and Sweden can compete with this, and maybe Russia.

Best. Contest. Ever.

The quality of songs has escalated in the last 15 years while the UK still thinks getting Radio 2 material in the traditional UK pop song style is a way of winning. You look at the number of banging pop dance tunes and you can see other countries do pop so much better, and niche entries are so much more interesting than the usual formula pap we enter. The UK public still is obsessed with the idea that it's just sour grapes cos everyone hates us. No it's not. It's cos we don't make the slightest effort to win and we haven't since Andrew Lloyd Webber got fed up with the system and opted to try and help.

Until we, the UK, enter contemporary and/or edgy material we will continue to come last. Radio One needs to take over the show, and it needs to take chances in entries.

Italy? Not my favourite by any stretch (Finland I liked more) but anything that boosts rock music has got my support - I like tunes, and the song was more of a rap over a rock backdrop than an actual melody. The number of great dance tunes tended to cancel each other out and let non-dance dominate. France was brilliant, ditto Malta, Cyprus and a bunch of others. Iceland so sorry they didnt win (they deserved a win after not getting their win last year), and sorry james newman got no points, nice bloke making an effort where others don;t try, but if you can't get your own nation excited about your entry in advance of the contest.....I'm old enough to remember the olden days when UK entries were big pop stars written by by successful pop writers and they'd all become big European hits before the contest even started. To the extent that they often didn't win because people had got sick of hearing them...

That should be the aim - to produce big hits that also happen to be Eurovision entries.
