Have UK ever sent a rock act before ? We definitely need to take a risk next year and not send something generic again

So glad Italy won my absolute fave and Ukraine doing so well too. Brilliant results over all

With Måneskin being #9 (and SHUM #69 despite sung in Ukranian) on global Spotify, wonder if UK artists realize that they could actually get HITS by participating.

Bill Bailey put his hat in the ring for next year on Twitter - and has revealed that he did submit a song a few years ago! He's said it was "a spoof eco-anthem in the style of Dad’s Army" I'd love to see him give it a shot!

I’d rather have Newman or Gemini back for nil points round 2

Speaking of Malta (from a bit earlier in the thread), we've got a scandal emerging around the broadcaster paying foreign people to place bets on Malta to win to inflate Destiny's odds and therefore hype: https://timesofmalta.com/articles/view/je-m...rovision.874813

This isn't personally too shocking for me, as it reminds me of Ryan mentioning a couple of years back that the Maltese delegation was famed among the juries for being the nicest, and for bringing gifts to the juries. I often wondered if Malta's "underperformance on the televote" was actually a persistant and dodgy overperformance on the jury, and seeing blatant corruption like this brings me closer to the second hypothesis. Any thoughts?

There was definitely a group of juries that prior to 2014 seemed to have a pattern of being "friendly" to each other. Hungary, Montenegro, Armenia, San Marino, Malta and Azerbaijan were among the biggest culprits.

Also I think it's been long suspected that some countries used bots to keep their odds artificially inflated but I don't think it's ever been proven - until now?

I do think 2016 and 2018 particularly strike me as more overperformance on the jury rather than underperformance on the televote. Destiny I think was maybe a bit of both leaning towards underperformance on televote (if anything, after past jury results, I thought Malta could be the jury winner this year) and is a case where I think the running order really hindered her, 2nd on the televote in the semi to 14th in the final is quite a drop, overtake by Lithuania, Russia and Sweden out of countries that were also in semi (Sweden who came 10th in the televote in the semi-final!).

With all the ads and promo they put in, I can well believe that odds were inflated too, but I do question why. Destiny has an amazing voice, she had a strong song and was already a recognisible name in the fandom before she was selected, she was someone everyone KNEW would end up in the contest someday due to the Junior Eurovision win...surely payola wasn't needed and she would've been up there in the odds anyway? Perhaps not as the favourite for a long period, but top 3 or top 5.

Hopefully Malta learn from this and realise that the days of being able to buy a win are over (a qualification and a 13th place on the other hand...) as it puts far too much pressure on their acts and it's really not nice to see the underwhelming televote scores that they get served up with at the end.

Bill Bailey has now confirmed that he's writing a song for next year! Hopefully he releases it even if it doesn't get used, because I'd be quite curious.
I’m not so sure his style of humour would translate far outside the UK, I know he’s a national treasure here but I wouldn’t be surprised at another nul points scenario if we sent him. Unless he sent a serious song!

Does anyone outside the UK really know Bill Bailey? I don't... Inside jokes won't work I'd say.

I've no idea about the rest of Europe, but he often has big tours in Australia. But I agree with you there, I imagine he'd be aware of that though!

Only here for it if it is going to be a serious song, and preferably with someone else as the performer.

But also it's clear that the BBC just do their own thing so not worried about this actually coming to anything. Aren't BMG also meant to be involved again next year? (I thought it was meant to be a 3-year deal or something, could be wrong and I'm not sure how the 2020 contest being cancelled may affect that)

dear god havent we suffered through enough

I Want Love woulda been perfect for us (definitely could've seen a top half result, if staged well)... If she can steer clear of whatever the fook she's been doing for the last few eras, I could see her doing really well!

She's known pretty much worldwide, right?

Tbf sending Jessie J would be a win/win. If she does well then that's good for the UK I guess. If not we get to laugh at her bombing.
But I think this rumour has been plucked out of thin air

Been watch some of the performances again. Is it just me or were there more bas vocal performances this year?

Poland and Moldova were particularly bad.
