November 10, 20213 yr It’s a pity it takes tik tok to get noticed chart wise these days! This! But happy that it’s getting Sam some exposure and for a good reason (The song is being used for anti Domestic Abuse). Hopefully it will introduce him to a few new people who will check out his albums now.
November 11, 20213 yr Live version of ‘Seventeen Going Under’ just added to YouTube - I guess in response to the fact it’s now taking off however they should have waited until tomorrow so that the streams count! SSrsj1rBE8Q
November 12, 20213 yr 17 weeks in the charts and reaches a new peak of #22 :cheer: Top 10 next week please
November 12, 20213 yr Get that massive hit for Sam any which way... ... but would still prefer it being because its a bloody good song rather than Tik Tok (albeit for a better reason than just dancing about a bit)
November 12, 20213 yr Get that massive hit for Sam any which way... ... but would still prefer it being because its a bloody good song rather than Tik Tok (albeit for a better reason than just dancing about a bit) ^^ This, but I’m glad it managed 3 weeks in the Top 40 off it’s own merit before the TikTok trend.
November 12, 20213 yr Get that massive hit for Sam any which way... ... but would still prefer it being because its a bloody good song rather than Tik Tok (albeit for a better reason than just dancing about a bit) Those two things aren't mutually exclusive - the song has got more visibility via TikTok but people wouldn't be then streaming the full song if they didn't like it. I really don't get this weird gatekeeping attitude, TikTok is not magically different to any other music discovery platform and if anything it's better than most others for consistently giving big platforms to smaller artists.

I really don't get this weird gatekeeping attitude, TikTok is not magically different to any other music discovery platform and if anything it's better than most others for consistently giving big platforms to smaller artists. I just think that Sam has worked incredibly hard and waited a long time for a Top 40 hit and a few weeks ago he got one off the back of his album being released. Now Seventeen Going Under is suddenly going to be labelled a TikTok hit rather than it just being about the music. As I said... get that hit however... I think I would have just preferred it to get there on music alone. It is also unlikely to lead to further hits - TikTok hits rarely do. It'll go back to him getting mid-sized successes off the back of the music. So I don't see this as a weird attitude
November 12, 20213 yr Anything that gives him more visibility is a good thing in my book, and he's headlining his first major festival next year! Tramlines alongside Kasabian & Madness: @1458519722811605000

I think I would have just preferred it to get there on music alone. It is also unlikely to lead to further hits - TikTok hits rarely do. It'll go back to him getting mid-sized successes off the back of the music. So I don't see this as a weird attitude The part I bolded is the attitude I am referring to. A 'TikTok hit' is not inherently different or worse than any other kind of hit and I see no reason why they should be derided as such (especially now basically all hit songs are also TikTok hits to at least some extent). It's just a different platform. You could argue that almost no hit singles are 'just about the music' if you choose to ostracise entire platforms - what makes people discovering a song via TikTok any different than people discovering a song via the radio for example? (apart from radio playlists being controlled by a much smaller and more powerful industry-connected group of people of course...) It is true that smaller artists who have a song blow up on TikTok rarely manage follow-up hits but the alternative to that if the platform didn't exist would be, in all likelihood, they would simply never have got a hit in the first place. Sam Fender is hardly in the same category as these TikTok one hit wonders anyway since he does have a big established fanbase already and is not going to be struggling to continue charting songs ('Seventeen Going Under' may be his biggest hit but it's not his only hit, he has had 6 other songs make the top 100 with most of those having pretty good longevity, of course not to even mention his 2 #1 albums). Him having a new crowd of people discovering this song can't be a bad thing for him, at least some of those people probably will start following the rest of his music as well, and if they don't then who cares, it's not like the people who already cared about his music are going to be driven away because he got a hit single. See also Glass Animals. I guess I would get the argument more if he was getting a big hit by purposefully changing / dumbing down his sound with the express intent of appealing to the TikTok crowd (cough Drake) but this is literally just a normal Sam Fender song - a bit too normal to a fault in my opinion lol - that has happened to become popular there.
November 12, 20213 yr Good to see ‘Spit Of You’ having some longevity as well 89-41-42-43-55-52, shame it’s likely to get kicked out shortly with the influx of Christmas songs but it’s streams are increasing (possibly off of the back of SGU and the fact SOY is in his Spotify Top 5).
November 17, 20213 yr i can’t believe this is going to go top 10 next week! i’m hoping spit of you will sneak a week top 40 too as that’s increasing, possibly this week or next!

Sam better not be robbed by the Christmas chart silliness.
November 17, 20213 yr Maybe TikTok will latch onto Winter Song instead :basil: Absolutely love Sam’s version - totally overlooked too :drama:
November 17, 20213 yr Absolutely love Sam’s version - totally overlooked too :drama: It's an okay version but nothing is ever gonna come close to Hull's version.
November 18, 20213 yr Maybe TikTok will latch onto Winter Song instead :basil: :o was thinking exactly this today, my Xmas number one last year!!
November 18, 20213 yr It's an okay version but nothing is ever gonna come close to Hull's version. Only discovered the original after hearing Sam’s version!
