Canteen assistant at St Luke's University, Bill Potts caught the Doctor's eye when she attended his lectures despite not actually being a student there. He committed to tutoring her, but when a sentient puddle follows Bill, the Doctor is forced to let his guard down to protect her, and everyone else. Much to Nardole's annoyance, the Doctor and Bill maintain a close friendship and they continue to go on adventures together, until Bill gets shot on a Mondasian colony ship. Separated from the Doctor for years, Bill is kept alive at the bottom of the ship but is cruelly converted to a Cyberman. In a somewhat happy ending, Heather (the puddle) rescues Bill's consciousness as she dies and they travel the universe together.
