I reckon that it would completely depend on the song for Weeknd to go straight to no.1 but probably not. His non album release with Calvin Harris only debuted at 33 last September for example.

 

That was basically farted out with no fanfare and nobody cared/liked it.

Because we should always take the word of Wikipedia as gospel.

It got a very prominent NMF placement, it's also fairly high on Hot Hits AND it has both a lyric and music video. That sure enough makes it a single in 2021.

Most high profile albums get a chosen song to feature high up NMF, I'm not sure whether Happier Than Ever was intended to be a single from that precise moment or not but I think its success since then has pretty much made it a single. Music video doesn't necessarily make it a single but does work in its favour. I generally use Radio 1 as the clearest indicator for an artist like Billie, whose singles are always playlisted.

It's a 5 minute track and most of the "good stuff" happens in the last 2 minutes, so not ideal for radio play. Do we know if they've released a more radio-friendly edit?

Don’t know if it was always the plan but definitely the right course of action. NDA didn’t really set the charts alight whereas Happier Than Ever has a lot more going for it.

 

Hoping Oxytocin starts climbing more as it is a clear stand out on the album.

I think it was clearly the plan from the start, why wouldn't they remove the current single (NDA) and replace it with Happier than Ever on HH on Friday morning

The song is up to #9 on Apple, new peak I think, also finally top 40 on Amazon, up to #36, the outlet where she was doing worst
