Random side note but i've always thought it was a shame that Sonnet wasn't released as a proper single in the UK. It got to #74 as an import only and although it probably would have never been a #1 contender it would surely have given them another Top 10 single and is another diamond of a track.

Agree its an amazing song

Also agree that Sonnet should have beeen a single

Not sure why they stopped after Lucky man

Cos the album kept selling well thru 1998

Sonnet was played at the time on radio if I remember correctly, probably actually boosted album sales by not being available as a single.

what other "lost" singles did we have at the time? I can only remember Coldplay - Don't Panic

but I'm sure there were others... Oasis maybe?

Champagne Supernova I assume?

I still remember the first time I heard The Drugs Don't Work. It was morning time, one Saturday morning and I was still in bed. I remember really thinking the verse and chorus were all sorts of beautiful. But then when the bass came in when Richard sings "But I know I'm a losing streak", it made me clench my fists, put a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. It spent a period in my all time top 10.

Which is bizarre because Urban Hymns had already spent 32 weeks in the Top 8 and was pushing for 1.5 millions sales.

It really is a beautiful song in all sorts of ways.

Urban Hymns is a masterpiece.

great and worthy record that almost topped my chart, but the Verve chart-toppers in my personal charts were Bittersweet Symphony (easily their top and greatest moment) and Lucky Man, and Richard Ashcroft's solo Check The Meaning.
I actually prefer The Drugs Don't Work to Bittersweet Symphony, the latter has more engaging production but the former has the emotion and the lyrics.

FOUR maximum points came this track’s way but even JackJones, Jade, AaronTM and Leonardo can only make this the forum’s third favourite chart topper of 1998 though it is our favourite Spice Girls No 1 of the decade.

Phew! Thank goodness it didn't come top! Surprise of the Contest for me, I had no idea it was that popular - that said it's the 6th-biggest Spice single in my charts, peaking at 6, behind Say You'll Be There (1st), Spice Up Your Life (2nd), Too Much (3rd), Wannabe (4th), Who Do You Think You Are (5th), and just ahead of 2 Become 1 :o :D
hw many of those who gave a 30 to Viva Forever were 7 years old when it was released? :) tell the truth!! :)

Well done Viva Forever for finishing so high. It’s pretty soulful for its genre though it didn’t come particularly close to my votes.

I’ve had a pretty good run lately, going from only 4 votes in the final 13 to 4 in the final 7. That’s not to say that I haven’t really liked some of the songs that have been revealed, particularly 3am Eternal and The Drugs Don’t Work.

I was nine!

But in seriousness, I think it’s a beautiful ballad and when doing my ranking it was the song that gave me the most nostalgia for the nineties.
