October 17, 20213 yr I actually have a conflicting relationship with Professional Widow. I love Tori and she was without a shadow of a doubt my fav artist of the 90s. Her 90s albums are all masterpieces. But out of the maybe 100 songs she released in the 90s (counting album tracks, b-sides, soundtracks), PW might be my least favourite... the dance version makes it a bit better but still... Sure it's one of the most unexpected #1s ever... I think the song is supposed to be about Courtney Love ;) funnily when looking at the top 50 songs left, I thought there were 6 songs that were a bit worst than the real and easily the weakest link and are the 6 that have left already (Sunscreen, Say you'll be there, BB, PW, 3 Lions, It's like that)
October 17, 20213 yr Author Wait! So I DIDN'T vote for Tori? I'm not a huge fan of the song in itself but I still get a buzz from hearing it and love that it was a hit. Just double checked and no you didn't- and yes I was surprised! :D
October 17, 20213 yr But out of the maybe 100 songs she released in the 90s (counting album tracks, b-sides, soundtracks), PW might be my least favourite... It's certainly in the bottom 5 of her songs of the decade.
October 17, 20213 yr I love the remix version, I think Armand Van Helden did an amazing job with it... but the original I'm not so keen on :/
October 17, 20213 yr OMG! i lost another one today, poor Tori. I totally disagree with some other comments on here, PW is the only one good Tori Amos song imo, thanks to Armand of course. :P
October 17, 20213 yr I'm on Team NO to the Widow, it's just not Tori Amos and it's irritatingly repetitive. I'll take any of her solo hits in preference, including her wonderful current revamp of A Nightingale Sang In Berkely Square. Three Lions used to give me goosebumps. Then they played the bloody thing for 25 years every two years and I just OD'd on it. I'll take any other Lightning Seeds record in preference, they are all fab. Backstreet Boys is a fab tune - it's not quite up there with Everybody or Larger Than Life, but it's better than most of their insipid ballads. I always suspected they wanted it that way.....

October 18, 20213 yr Beetlebum is my clear favourite of those three but the other two are both good examples of their respective genres, plus I must admit to loving that Meat Loaf track at the time.
October 18, 20213 yr Beetlebum is brilliant though I didn’t properly appreciate it at the time. Should probably have voted for it on reflection. Meatloaf - undeniably a classic but not for me. There’s a lot of quite formulaic pop from the late 90s and early 00s but Genie in a Bottle is a real stand-out example of how to do it well.
October 18, 20213 yr Meat Loafs huge number one must have come as a shock at the time as he didn’t have an original top 40 hit since like 1986 before that! Great song!
October 18, 20213 yr Genie in a bottle is a great pop song, undeniable that both Britney and Christina debut singles were amazing and perfect pop songs
October 18, 20213 yr Meat Loafs huge number one must have come as a shock at the time as he didn’t have an original top 40 hit since like 1986 before that! Great song! There was a huge buzz about his comeback. It didn't feel like a shock.
October 19, 20213 yr Meh at Beetlebum. It could be a classic but not for me! It would have been surprising if Meat Loaf wasn't going to be number 1 with that strong vocals, nice production and an epic video. :P I've never been a Christina Aguilera fan but Genie in a Bottle it's her best yet, so catchy and fun :D
October 19, 20213 yr Love 'Genie In A Bottle' - very playful and hooky, plus I think while Christina can be guilty of over-singing, she utilises her voice well in that song.
