November 2, 20213 yr Viva Forever is wonderful. Mel C makes it! The only SG song I would ever choose to listen to. I never liked Bittersweet Symphony. Edited November 2, 20213 yr by Colm
November 2, 20213 yr hw many of those who gave a 30 to Viva Forever were 7 years old when it was released? :) tell the truth!! :) I was 22. And I love it.
November 2, 20213 yr I don't mind Viva Forever either, it wasn't in contention for my points but I think it's held up okay - agreed this is largely down to Mel C.
November 3, 20213 yr out of the 7 left, the only one I didn't vote was Cher so thats the one that will probably win :D surprised Killer and Your Woman ended up so high, probably out next?
November 3, 20213 yr NO 8- 277 POINTS Viva Forever The Spice Girls (Voter: Chez Wombat- 16 points, JackJones- 30 points, Jade- 30 points, Vibe- 14 points, Hide&Seek- 18 points, AaronTM- 30 Points, xajnipi- 21 points, DarrenJ77- 29 points, Shoat- 14 points, Just Jack- 27 points, Leonardo- 30 points, Colm- 8 points, Jester- 10 points)- #1 for 2 weeks in August 1998 FOUR maximum points came this track’s way but even JackJones, Jade, AaronTM and Leonardo can only make this the forum’s third favourite chart topper of 1998 though it is our favourite Spice Girls No 1 of the decade. gSGqzDBR_tA Iconic song, would have got my 30 points too if I’d have voted
November 3, 20213 yr It would have been top five or therabouts for me too, SO good and definitely my favourite Spice Girls song. I was 11 at the time personally but don't see why it couldn't be enjoyed by all ages frankly, it's a superb track - particularly melodically and production wise - and probably their most 'adult'/MOR sounding song (although the animated video makes it feel less so maybe). It fit the 1998 soundscape perfectly among all the other string-laden ballads and percussive MOR acts like Tin Tin Out and The Corrs but without sounding schmaltzy or bland, it really is a very nostalgic, beautiful song and with some of the most restrained but effective vocals the Spice Girls ever delivered.
November 3, 20213 yr hw many of those who gave a 30 to Viva Forever were 7 years old when it was released? :) tell the truth!! :) I was 1 :D even if I was old enough to remember the 90s there's no need to repeatedly invalidate the taste of others just because it doesn't align with yours :kink: Stunning song, glad it did so well  hearing it live at Wembley a couple of years ago took my appreciation to a whole other level. Rooting for Oasis or Madonna to win now that's out!
November 3, 20213 yr I was 1 :D even if I was old enough to remember the 90s there's no need to repeatedly invalidate the taste of others just because it doesn't align with yours :kink: Yes, this Bjork. Take note!
November 3, 20213 yr and on the other end of the spectrum me not having a '98 nostalgia connection since I couldn't even form a sentence yet let alone be interested in music... not that I need to justify anything but society is obsessed with tearing down anything marketed towards young girls/women and it's exhausting looking forward to the next result ^_^
November 3, 20213 yr Aside from Jester and Colm being far older than 7 years old in the 90s :kink: I think he's blocked our posts because they don't suit his AGENDA
November 3, 20213 yr not that I need to justify anything but society is obsessed with tearing down anything marketed towards young girls/women and it's exhausting Yeah, it's such a weird vibe that grown adults feel the need to stake their superiority in what they like and to do it towards children of all people who have no idea these dumb arguments are even happening. People (children included!) who just like stuff because they like it will always be cooler than elitists.
November 3, 20213 yr not that I need to justify anything but society is obsessed with tearing down anything marketed towards young girls/women and it's exhausting
November 3, 20213 yr I just listened to Viva Forever and I should have given it more than 8 points. It's better than the Don't Look Back in F*ing Anger!
November 3, 20213 yr Author NO 7- 292 POINTS Killer Adamski (Voter: Jimwatts- 11 points, Steve201- 15 points, Julian T- 11 points, Jade- 13 points, Jason- 24 points, Garyfeld- 29 points, Popchartfreak- 28 points, Donnahjaneymack- 25 points, xajnipi- 4 points, Shoat- 25 points, Just Jack- 1 point, Gezza- 17 points, Dan::G- 17 points, Colm- 28 points, *Dandy- 25 points, Bjork- 19 points)- #1 for 4 weeks in May/June 1990 So this is 1990’s favourite No 1 according to us even though it didn’t make any individual’s No 1 on the votes front. t1b7DFOj4Bk
November 3, 20213 yr Great result for Killer and it’s done really well to top such a strong year. It doesn’t sound dated at all and of course Seal’s vocals are brilliant. I love the follow up, The Space Jungle, too. Not sure what happened to him after that.
November 3, 20213 yr major classic alert! Totally deserved top 10, I'd say top 3, hasn't dated at all. re: pop tastes of girls and women getting slagged off by men, that's always been a thing, and my tastes exactly coincide with both sexes so I've never paid it any attention and always argued equally for music with any gender bias, yay for me, I've never let critics influence my opinion  When I turned 9 I loved Petula Clark's This Is My song, prob the nearest equivalent to Spice Girls Viva Forever. I will admit loving any song no problem. Viva is a good record, I rated it top 10 at the time and I was 40, cough! :o  Prefer Petula Clark, though, cos I was 9 and it makes me nostalgic and Viva Forever doesn't cos you dont get as nostalgic for records from when you are 40, it's more based on how you feel about the record itself :teresa: Something you can all look forward to, you're welcome for the advance notice
November 3, 20213 yr Oh of course nostalgia can influence, but it's this angle of oh people MUST'VE given this song 30 points due to nostalgia when they were a child, there's no possible other explanation because it has no merits etc, when a few of us have explained (not that we needed to justify anything...) that this isn't the case. I was not even alive at the start of this decade and merely 2 years old by the end of it, I just love the song and don't appreciate this weird repeated dissection (as if we're trying to be caught out like it's shameful to enjoy it...) just because it's the Spice Girls. Fine if you don't like the song but the incessant invalidation is tiring. I have a very open-minded taste and there's nothing wrong with it! Elsewhere, it's also cool if people are primarily into pop music of a similar ilk, do your thing. Yeah, it's such a weird vibe that grown adults feel the need to stake their superiority in what they like and to do it towards children of all people who have no idea these dumb arguments are even happening. People (children included!) who just like stuff because they like it will always be cooler than elitists. If I could like this post then I would! There's SO MUCH I could say about vitriol that harmless young fans face and gender double standards but I'll be here for hours and don't want to distract too much from the point of Gezza's brilliant thread. So I'll leave it here because I think I'm done shouting loud in defence, when I shouldn't have to be doing that. I like what I like and there's nothing embarrassing about that! ~~~ 'Killer' now a totally different song but also brilliant! I don't know what it would've sounded like at the time but over 30 years later it feels fresh and in its own lane.
