Biography

In a short period of time German producer Jonasu’s joyful blend of house beats and an ear for catchy melodies have established him as one of pop’s rising stars. His songs, streamed millions of times, are international hits but much of his work is born from the streets of Amsterdam. Jonasu has called the Dutch capital home for over a decade after moving from his German hometown Mannheim to study music at the prestigious Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Jonasu cites the city as an influence on his sound for more than just his musical education. His music is inspired by the people and stories, both real and imagined, that he comes across on his daily bike roads across the city. “Everyone in Amsterdam cycles,” he says, explaining his unique creative process. “It’s a big influence on my life. In 20 minutes I can come up with a new melody or lyrical concept. Often I’ll arrive in the studio and have ideas ready to go.” In addition to making his own music, Jonasu has written with, and produced for, other artists including Sam Feldt's multi-platinum selling single Post Malone (feat. RANI) and Alok & Dynoro's smash single On & On. He’s spent time recording in London, Stockholm, Berlin and L.A. - Spotify

Biography

Becky Hill

With her highly resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semifinal round, Hill emerged a fan favorite and became the first Voice UK contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Dutch EDM star Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in June 2014.

Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others, before being eliminated. By her own admission, she was a novice in the music industry game and it took her 18 months to finally get a record deal. In the meantime, however, her sultry, soulful, older-than-her-years voice was highly sought-after by dance artists looking for feature vocalists. Her first recorded appearance, on British drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson's single "Afterglow," went to number eight on the U.K. singles chart. She then appeared on Rudimental's single "Powerless," singing with them at several U.K. festivals in 2013, including Glastonbury.

Following her success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." It showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and included the single "Unpredictable." The single "Sunrise in the East" followed a year later. In 2019, Hill issued a pair of upbeat singles, "I Could Get Used to This," which featured Weiss, and "Wish You Well," which featured Sigala. - Apple Music

David Guetta

From his early days playing Chicago house in French discotheques to his long reign atop the pop charts, David Guetta has revolutionised dance music multiple times. Born in Paris in 1967, Guetta began DJing in the late ’80s, when the shimmery sound known as the “French touch” was taking shape. By the early 2000s, at his F*** Me I’m Famous parties in Ibiza, he had translated that melodic style into a clever merger of pop sass and club swagger. He parlayed that mix into pure platinum with hits like 2003’s “Just for One Day”, an energy-stoking rework of David Bowie’s “Heroes”, and 2002’s “Just a Little More Love”, a sultry bump-and-grind featuring R&B singer Chris Willis. That versatility—along with a knack for killer hooks—would become one of Guetta’s principal calling cards, and as EDM exploded across pop culture at the end of the 2000s, Guetta’s shapeshifting style led the way, yielding ecstatic affirmations (“When Love Takes Over”), feisty come-ons (“Sexy Bitch”) and unstoppable singalongs (The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”, which Guetta produced). Since then, his collaborations (Sia, Nicki Minaj) have kept listeners guessing even as his choruses—triumphant as a bottle of bubbly blowing its top—have proven one of pop’s most dependable pleasures. - Apple Music

Biography

The Kid LAROI

In an Apple Music interview from mid-2020, The Kid LAROI reminisced about the short but formative time he spent in LA living with the late emo rapper Juice WRLD. They’d hang out all day, bonding, making music, seeing friends, whatever. People always coming and going, never a dull moment. Sometimes, Juice would wake LAROI up in the middle of the night, wild with excitement about a track LAROI had to put a verse on. Other mornings, LAROI would wake up to his and Juice’s managers saying it was time to pack up and head to Texas. Like, now. He was 15, 16 years old. “I’d never experienced anything like that,” he said. “Especially coming from Australia, where everything is kind of like its own bubble.”

Not that 15-year-olds outside Australia would be used to it either. But such is the meteoric ascent of a talented young rapper circa 2020. Born Charlton Howard in 2003, LAROI—whose name is a reference to the Kamilaroi Indigenous nation, in which he has family roots—grew up in the suburbs of Sydney, and began to work on music when he was a pre-teen. Like Juice WRLD, Post Malone or even Lil Peep, LAROI’s key tracks—“ALWAYS DO”, “TRAGIC” and the Juice WRLD collaboration “GO”—blend ultra-melodic trap with shades of alternative rock and classic pop, a fusion that has put him on the front burner of pop-rap. His first album, F*CK LOVE, hit the Top 10 before he turned 18. - Apple Music

Justin Bieber

There’s a moment in a 2020 interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe where Justin Bieber begins—quietly, hesitantly—to cry. “It was hard for me being that young and being in the industry, and not knowing where to turn, and everyone telling me they love me, and just turning their back on you in a second,” Bieber says, each clause kicking up memories like dust. The point isn’t to weep with or for him—he had more dreams come true in his first 25 years than most people manage in a lifetime. But he’s also one of the few pop stars of his generation to have truly grown up in public, weathering the cable newsification of celebrity culture in the internet era while still trying to develop as both an artist and a person. Even early on, you could tell he had his eye on the future, balancing a doe-eyed wholesomeness with earnest attempts at hip-hop and R&B, material that suited him as a kid with material that reflected his growth into adolescence and adulthood. Some teen-pop singers end up trapped in amber; Justin Bieber has, knocks and all, kept swimming.

Born in London, Ontario, in 1994, Bieber was famously discovered when his future manager, Scooter Braun, stumbled on some performance videos that Bieber’s mom had uploaded to YouTube to share with family and friends. Braun, who understood not only Bieber’s appeal but the potential of the internet, encouraged him to keep making videos and keep the equipment cheap—an approach that not only helped Bieber’s growing fanbase to understand that he was still just a kid like them, but drafted a new blueprint for how artists could reach audiences in the digital era. With the exception of a voice change around 2011, 2009’s My World, 2010's My World 2.0 and 2012's Believe are more or less of a piece: the sound of a boy trying to stick the landing into puberty. Released in 2015, Purpose showed Bieber developing a more thoughtful connection to his material, including collaborations with vanguard pop producers like Diplo, Skrillex and benny blanco. After a five-year break during which Bieber underwent significant personal changes—including a detox from touring life, a diagnosis of Lyme disease and a epiphanic marriage to Hailey Baldwin—he came back with 2020’s Changes. “People have been putting me on a pedestal,” Bieber told Apple Music. ""I didn’t ask for that. Obviously I love making music, but there are a lot of people that love making music and they’re not in the position that I’m in. I’m just trying to steward that wisely, steward my relationship wisely. I want people to take a look at my story—hopefully, my words can make a difference.” - Apple Music

Biography

There’s a lovely moment a little ways into Apple Music’s Songwriter documentary about Ed Sheeran in which Sheeran, jet-lagged and carrying a cup of tea, straggles out into a yard in Malibu at dawn, sits down at his laptop and begins writing a song about the moment right in front of him: the crisp air, the birdsong, the hot tea, the day ahead. He gets a full verse in, melody and all, then pauses. “Songs are weird things,” he says. “How so?” an interviewer asks. “They just come and go,” Sheeran says, smiling. “And they never give you any warning.” For Sheeran, they seem to come pretty reliably. Born in 1991 in Halifax, England, he started out gigging on the UK pub circuit before releasing his first studio album, +, in 2011, and has since become one of the most unstoppable singer-songwriters in music, forging a light blend of folk, pop, hip-hop and dance that feels slick but lived-in, intimate but universal. Whether on his own (“Sing”, “The A Team”, “Shape of You”, “Perfect”) or in collaboration with artists from Taylor Swift to Eminem to Justin Bieber, Sheeran has a unique ability to strike a chord that feels both bittersweet and redemptive, good-natured and genuine: the hopeless romantic who convinces you he might just be right. In 2017, he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, touching Prince Charles on the arm while shaking his hand—a breach of royal protocol, and an appealingly human one at that. - Apple Music

Biography

As the first group to win The X Factor, Little Mix set a high standard from their formation in 2011. In the years since, the quartet have exceeded any expectations placed on them, performing spirited pop that unapologetically shows off its members’ personalities and effortlessly fit in with the 2010s’ constantly shifting pop trends. Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall had all auditioned as solo singers when trying out for The X Factor but were put together early on in the show’s run, and their charisma and harmonies won over viewers. Little Mix’s first single from their 2012 debut album, “Wings”, was an ideal opening statement for them, its themes of empowerment boosted by a stomping beat and a sing-along-worthy chorus. Since then, they have channelled confident girl groups like the Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child as well as forward-thinking singers like Janet Jackson and Rihanna, with singles like the sparkling “Black Magic”, the defiant “Shout Out to My Ex” and 2017’s chaotic Stormzy collab “Power” combining no-nonsense lyrics with immediate beats. In 2020, they cemented their legacy both on record and with Little Mix: The Search, a reality show tasked with putting together a next-generation girl band—demonstrating that their goal since they were put together in the early 2010s has been lifting up women all over the world through energetic, danceable pop. - Apple Music

JLS

Eternal Love

Biography

In 2008 JLS came second on The X Factor, and remain the biggest self-founded group to ever emerge from the talent show. JLS have chalked up an impressive five No 1 singles, including the enduring dance floor filler Beat Again and the arms-aloft heart-tugging ballad Everybody In Love. They’ve sold over six million records and shifted more than 1.4million live tickets. Thanks to a combination of rich, harmonious vocals and the slickest dance moves a British boyband has ever delivered, the JLS live experience was so in demand they played London’s O2 Arena a whopping 16 times during their four album career.

JLS became the first X Factor act to win a BRIT Award when in 2010 they took home both British Breakthrough Act and British Single for Beat Again, the fastest-selling single of 2009. They later added 5 MOBO Awards, 4 Digital Music Awards and 3 Urban Music Awards to their collection of silverware. Their four albums – JLS, Outta This World, Jukebox and Evolution – all went multi-platinum. Then at the height of their success, they split.

“There’s unfinished business,” states Marvin. The camaraderie and genuine friendship between JLS is what makes them solid, particularly for a boyband. They finish each other’s sentences and consistently burst into peals of laughter. “When I think about JLS I think ‘family’, says Oritsé, “I missed the feeling of being in a band. It feels like coming home. These boys are my brothers.” - Spotify

Fun fact: Ed Sheeran is now the first artist in history to have two songs spend at least 10 weeks at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart.
It will end when they both go to ACR Scott, don’t worry 😂

ACR is like Voldemort for Scott Mills. Must never be mentioned under pain of death!

Bruno Brookes had a couple of hits but neither quite made the Top 40.

Not massively impressed with either of these new entries so far

Pat Sharpe had top 40 hits in the 80/90s but assume he never went on to present the chart?

Missed due to work but very pleased to see Industry Baby get Top 5 and Kiss My (Uh Oh) get Top 10. Hurricane is my favourite from Kanye's new album so i'm glad that got the Top 10 position as well, although a bit miffed he's prevented Need To Know from getting that milestone.

With 'Hurricane' ending up as the highest Kanye track, I guess that means they did end up not combining the two versions of 'Jail' after all (maybe I am wrong but I still feel like they surely have to have been combined earlier in the week for 'Jail' to have been so far ahead in the Tuesday midweeks, maybe they had them initially combined but then uncombined them after Spotify corrected its own glitch?) The Sunday release definitely seems to have screwed Kanye out of getting a second and possibly even a third top 10 hit from this album, but as it were even with only 5 days of availability he ended up having near identical chart impact to what he got with each of his last two solo albums (one song in the top 10 and two more in the top 20). The album itself of course also ending up with nearly exactly the same first week sales as 'JESUS IS KING' despite missing two days as well. Kanye now having #1 albums and top 10 singles in three consecutive decades :cheeseblock:

Great to see 'INDUSTRY BABY' going top 5, I'm not sure how much steam it has left in it to go any higher than that (especially with the Drake takeover coming next week) but #5 is a satisfactory enough peak regardless! Wow at 'Heat Waves' already getting a new peak, possibly coming to be a very belated top 10 hit at this rate. Cool to see the big rise for 'Cold Heart' although I am a tad conflicted on the song (I don't really like how the interpolations/samples of both 'Sacrifice' and 'Rocket Man' cut off just short of the crescendo moments of both songs  but it is still an enjoyable song overall, I do really like the instrumental). On the downside though, was really hoping we had now swerved the possibility of that Guetta/MistaJam song making the top 40 after it stalled for the past couple of weeks, praying it does not go much further than this.

Yes I think they split the parts 1 and 2 for Jail and Ok Ok - on the Audio Streaming chart, the former is #15 and the latter is the 9th highest Kanye song at #49 (despite the combined Ok Ok being Kanye's 4th highest early on). The part 2s aren't in the top 100, but it seems reasonable neither would have made it on their own.
