September 9, 20214 yr Now wondering if my increased distaste for commercial dance music is truly because the quality of it dramatically fell off a cliff circa 2016 onwards or if it's really just me becoming an old man who moans about current trends. No, it is the children who are wrong. (For what it's worth I don't think the quality of chart music in other genres has declined, in fact I think it has noticeably improved again since a nadir around 2016/17 if my votes in the recent chart survivors / Record of the Decade are anything to go by). I agree and I know I've mentioned her already in this thread, never thought we'd get an artist as talented as Billie Eilish getting top several smash top 10 singles. Plus I know she's more mainstream but rate Olivia Rodrigo miles better than the female pop stars of a few years back.
September 9, 20214 yr Hoping Champagne Poetry does get replaced by Way 2 Sexy as Drake's third highest track by the end of the week, would be interesting for him to have an album track spending one week in the top five before dropping out with two consecutive studio albums though. Only three things in music are constant: 1. There are currently people obsessed with telling everyone that music sucks now. 2. 10 years from now, people will pine for the music of now, as they turn into the first point. 3. This will never be self-reflected upon to realise the irony. This might be one of the best posts I've read on this forum
September 9, 20214 yr I've heard that Ed Sheeran has dropped the price of his sheet music to 59p, he truly is desperate to stay at #1. #fakesheetsales For the record I said this ironically, I don't know why we now seem to be having a serious conversation about sheet music counting towards the charts x
September 9, 20214 yr I'm hoping the same and that they can hold on. You know what if ABBA had made their comeback 10 years ago in 2011 when iTunes sales ruled the charts. They would have occupied the no.1 and no.2 position i am positive of that.
September 9, 20214 yr In any era where the chart was based on paid for sales I think ABBA could have comeback with a #1 debut. Don’t Shut Me Down has been fairly stable on Spotify so far though which is impressive as that was always less certain.

The thing I find with dance music is that once you’ve been around a couple of decades you have heard it all before whereas a 13-16 yo hearing Joel Corry is probably loving it as they are hearing it for the first time in their era!

This applies to any genre, I'm noticing more and more rock bands now immediately make me think of older rock bands - which are actually relatively modern.

Yeh true I guess but it’s more obvious with dance as a genre. I mean Brit pop was clearly linked to the 60s but was unique as well!
September 9, 20214 yr I think there's always good music being related in all decades, the 90s, the 00s, the 10s and now the same... only that in the past your favourite songs were easily charting, since the last 10 years most of my favourite music doesn't make the chart except for albums charting high on week 1 only With singer-songwriter stuff actually now there's better music and better chances that ever, in the past people depended a lot on big labels, now many artists break without the support of a big label... For me dance music peaked in the late 90s-early 00s, I still remember in 96-97 when we had Born Slippy, Insomnia, Children, Firestarter, Breathe, Chemical Brothers... then in the early 00s with Silence, 9am, Sonique... then in the mid 00s it all went downhill and don't think we've recovered... suddenly it was all lazy dance covers, with few original new dance songs, it's like dance acts cannot write original songs anymore :/

September 10, 20214 yr The EDM heydays had some great songs, but they were essentially pop hits turned into EDM, like Titanium and Don't You Worry Child. Martin Garrix's Animals and Skrillex were anomalies.
September 10, 20214 yr I guess like with any trend it became oversaturated, by the 45th time Pitbull or Flo Rida tried to emulate the same song in that style it became a bit of a parody of itself.
September 10, 20214 yr I think 2013 - 2014 was the best time for dance music in the charts, at least in recent years. Drum & bass, disco/funk, UK garage and a few sub-genres of house all started making the charts simultaneously, and quite a few genuine underground hits ended up charting, a few even going to #1. I don't really know what it's like these days, but it's nice to see see Nightcrawlers, ATB and Tiesto all get smash hits. Although Tiesto's song is basically a MEDUZA song, I guess the days of Tiesto doing anything original are over. Rasputin is outrageous how similar it is to the original. The only thing Majestic contributed to the song was being a current trendy streaming name so it could get playlisted. It's a shame because Majestic has a lot of amazing songs and remixes, I think he could've done something really good with Rasputin if he'd actually done something. It even makes Barbra Streisand seem like an actual remix in comparison. Pitbull's streams have been skyrocketing recently so he might have a comeback like Sean Paul. I thought Calle Ocho and Hotel Room Service were great but a couple of years after that the songs he was pumping out were terrible. I think Friday should have been a #1. The song it's based off is one of the most iconic and legendary club songs of all time I think, it needs to go to #1 in at least one of its many forms.
