Initially released in the 90s but not charting, White Ladder blew up for David Gray in Summer 2000. The album hit no.2 that year and took its time to eventually hit the top spot in July 2001. The biggest hit from the album was no.5 smash ‘Babylon’ which was the track that launched David into the mainstream. 4 top 30 singles followed with ‘Please Forgive Me’, ‘This Year’s Love’, ‘’Sail Away’ and ‘Say Hello, Wave Goodbye’.

 

I didn’t have this album at the time but my brother did. It definitely inspired a lot of the male singer/songwriters at the time. Sail Away is probably my favourite. It was oddly not nominated for best album at the Brits despite the fact that David himsel was-with a Lost Songs album that had just resurfaced. I think the Brits imagined they were being cool. This album, however, is still one of the biggest if the century so far.

Beautiful beautiful album. The singles are all absolutely divine but love the rest too.

Just gone through this one and have compiled my ranking. All the singles are obviously all stellar but some really solid album track in 'We're Not Right' (that eerie weird button moon sounding instrumental is really interesting) and the album track is great too and also has some cool production set up, the two after that are solid and 'Silver Lining' is a clear least essential, not as crazy on that.
