I would have liked Suedeonia and Terra Avium to be in this semi but I hope you will all enjoy my 23 minute masterpiece. It has an illustrated lyric video to help keep your attention.

I know and have charted both the Altyr and Persephonia entries

Not sure if this is a good or bad thing! But pleased to at least have some hope after the last 2 BLEAK months.

Though from what I know of the respective artists, the actual songs won't be in any danger of being confused with each other

(it's a popular month for people called Tommy as we have a Tommy Villiers in semi 2 as well!)

Happy to have been drawn with Jadakissnia and Pagasa, only needed Utopia as well to go 3 for 3 on current BJSC participants who I know like at least one Deafheaven song. Although the one Deafheaven song that made it to the dhwe charts seems to be a much older song and as I understand it their older music is several universes away from their current sound :kink: (I've only discovered them this era but I see a lot of their fans not being too keen on the new direction, I'm much more into this shoegaze/post-rock sound than I am into black metal though so no complaints from me). I was debating between sending this or 'In Blur' as that song is probably their most 'accessible' (and has a music video) but ultimately decided it's best to just go with the song I like the most, not exactly going to be winning either way xx

I think there are 4 songs in this semi I've heard already - plus Travis' AQ as he already sent it to Club Bizarre a while ago! - though none of them are ones I remember being hugely standout on first listen, will see if they prove to be growers B-)

I'm sure The Gnashing would be getting points from me, I don't love that or In Blur as much as Great Mass of Color but they're all great and I've been meaning to give their new album a listen. You're right about their old stuff, I listened to a previous album and it was a challenge to make it half way through!

9 and 3 Quarters HAS to qualify. Amazing song.

Also Come Through to qualify too pls

from what I’ve seen deafheaven are a contentious band among black metal purists bc of their roots in shoegaze…. I’m not really into black metal but I got into them bc to me they were always just heavier shoegaze so the new stuff will def appeal to me! that’s all I’ll say lol

Ahh I see - like I say I'm not familiar with their earlier stuff but I suppose the pivot does make more sense if they did always have a shoegaze element to them.

'Great Mass Of Color' was the first song I heard from them and I am a fan of that too although it's only my fourth favourite on the album (after the two other singles and 'Shellstar') - my only issue with it is that I like the second half of the song far more than the first half so it takes a while to get into! It did grow on me more after hearing the album in full though.

The closing track on the new album, 'Mombasa', seems to be the favourite among their earlier fanbase and that was my least favourite song on the album so that's not putting me in any great rush to dig into the back catalogue  Most of the album is largely along the same lines as the singles though so it's certainly worth a listen.

:( Supper's Ready is a true classic which would definitely have got points from me.

Whenever they are I'd like for someone other than me to host them this time please as I am going to be busy / away for the next few days so I'm not sure if I'll be able to commit to attending let alone hosting!

(I'll be back to host the final listenthrough unless someone else wants to tho x)

Thought I'd wait to see if anyone else came forward (but nobody did), but I can host Semi 1 listenthrough. It would have to be either Friday / Saturday / Sunday evening though, so please let me know what days you can do.

Hopefully more people show up than for MFSC II when I hosted that the other week! :kink:

I could host but it would have to be on Sunday/Monday which may be leaving it a bit late, I've got evening work today through to Saturday.

When the very first song you listen to is a gem :dancing:

(I'd be happy with Friday or Saturday btw)

Maybe Genesis could be on Friday and the rest on Saturday. About equal length? I do enjoy old Genesis though...
Let me be the first to point out that this semifinal has Tommy Farrow, Genesis, and Tommy Genesis. That won't get confusing at all
I just noticed 'Can't Sleep' and 'Losing Sleep' back-to-back too

Here's the YouTube playlist!

There is a song from the same Genesis album with Friday in the title. :P

Any day would be OK with me for the listen through.

Get Them Out By Friday? I remember you mentioning that one in awardinary's days of the week threads in the Lounge earlier this year.

Yes, that's the one. If anyone has watched the video for Supper's Ready now and was wondering why the Essex town of Harlow appears briefly in it, it's a reference to Get 'Em Out By Friday which is about people in rented properties being relocated to Harlow.
