Specifically, is there a hidden way to search for threads for artists whose names are less than 4 characters? For example, I am not able to search BuzzJack for artists like Sia, RAY BLK, Pia Mia, BTS, ATB and others. Also, some words seem to be considered too vague when entered into a search bar, such as “About”, “Everything”, “Beyond” and plenty of other examples of times when I’ve tried to find something specific containing one of those keywords.

 

What if such times exceptions are made to only search thread titles for words less than 4 letters so as to limit the results from posts instead? There must be a way to search for such terms on here. :mellow:

Because of the way the search works, returning all topics with instances of words searched, allowing shorter words would very likely make results unwieldy. And yes, I imagine because this is the way it works, certain common words are disallowed because they would be more of a hindrance than a help in finding what you want.

 

That's not to say it can't be done, I can see the setting in the Admin CP, but I would prefer to check with Phil in order to make such a change - it's already not a particularly fast search unless you're searching for a specific, unusual word.

Perhaps there’s a setting to show specific results based only on the exact search term entered. So for example, searching the keyword “cat” would not return results with “cats”, “catapult”, “scatter” and the like, but only titles containing the exact phrase searched, if under 4 characters long.

I'm pretty sure that is the way it works already.

Just put "site:buzzjack.com" in front of whatever you want to search for. It still isn't perfect but it is sometimes better than BuzzJack's own search function.

There seems to be a slight flaw with the search facility on the new site. When performing a search for a term, it is not possible to filter what part of the forum to search within before doing the search, then when you try to narrow down the results by using the advanced search options to filter what area of the forum to search within you are presented with a timeout error and you cannot complete the search and you need to start again.

Any advice? @JosephBoone

search is on the list. Ive just updated the table engine - can you try this again? Can you also let me know what you are searching for in which forums?

If this is not quick enough - should never timeout - i will add a seperate search service.

Not too sure, I still get occasional timeout errors when trying to narrow down search results. You can only enter so many parameters when you initiate the search then when you want to narrow down results only from a specific area of the forum you have to start all over again. Let's say I want to search the term "Quiz" but I only want to search within The Lounge... I cannot specify that is where I want to search until I've already done the search, after which it times out.

Surely I'm not the only one with this issue?

Whats an example keyword? For example if I am here and search for test and then change the forum to the lounge it works

If you're just searching in one forum, going to that forum and starting the search from there will automatically search only in that forum.

Perfect, that's what I'll do in future before carrying out a search! I'm just used to having to start from the index and begin searching the forum. 😄

That will eliminate the need to wait X number of seconds to narrow down the search results.

Oh just one small thing on that... when searching for topics, and within topic titles, do search results really need to return results for every single post made in that thread with the search term in the title? This didn't happen on the old site. One result per thread would suffice for a search term.

When I did a search and clicked on the second page of results, I got this message:

I couldn't find a way to go back, even to the previous page, so I had to start over.

That's the issue I was having before too @Riser but I think the method that Bré shared is a good solution.

i will upgrade the search tech in a couple of days and review

It wasn't for me, I was searching in just one forum when I got the error.
