February 9, 20223 yr Author I think it was the Eurovision 2019 interval act performance that slightly put me off Like A Prayer. It’s a long story but I was involved with the backing choir for it and it definitely wasn’t her finest moment. Still a great song and deserved winner really though. Pleased that my 29 secured the runner up position for Don’t You Want Me; definitely up there with my favourite songs ever. Thanks so much for doing this Gezza: it’s been like a little present to look forward to every day during the winter! You're welcome- in fact it was your votes that pushed IAS from No 2 to No 4 and DYWM from 4 to 2 as yours was the final set of votes I got! :D
February 9, 20223 yr I gave Like A Prayer more points than Don't You Want Me but I was still hoping the Human League would win as the underdogs. Thanks Gezza for running this poll.
February 9, 20223 yr From the Ultimate #1s poll in 2019: #1 Like A Prayer #5 Tainted Love #16 Don't You Want Me #27 Billie Jean #37 It's A Sin but who knows... I think the Human League and PSB could finish higher up the order this time. And they did! I gave Like A Prayer more points than Don't You Want Me but I was still hoping the Human League would win as the underdogs. This was also me. But it's another deserved win for Madonna. I generally prefer her 80s output and Like A Prayer is one of the greats. Thank you for running this Gezza, and at 48 pages, it's been a fun trip!
February 9, 20223 yr Ooh I put the top 2 right next to each other in my votes *.* Two fantastic songs - much as football chants try to ruin Don't You Want Me, it still remains great. Not much to say about Like a Prayer that hasn't already been said, it was an obvious winner from the start, but very deserved, she was truly at the top of her game in the 80s so it's fitting to see. Thanks once again for the great effort, Gezza, I'll miss following these x
February 9, 20223 yr I know it's an obvious choice but Like a Prayer was always getting my top score, it still fills me with utter joy whenever I hear it. I wasn't sure it would win at all, sometimes people deliberately don't vote for a likely winner and I did wonder if it would suffer from that here - but glad it hasn't ^_^ Thanks for running this Gezza, your 90s and 80s threads have been my favourites in a long time *.*
February 9, 20223 yr Thanks for hosting this as I do love the 80s - a defining era 40 years later and most of those number ones are culturally engrained in the culture of these islands. A defining decade! I like ‘Like A Prayer’ but don’t love it. ‘Don’t You Want Me’ for me mixed the unique futuristic new synth sound with an amazing pop song which showed a lot of other artists what could be done with ‘this sound of the future’!
February 10, 20223 yr Thanks for running this Gezza, a lot of fun to countdown again. I was one of the few who didn't actually vote for Like A Prayer, I don't hate it at all and its a worthy (if obvious) winner but I had to rapidly narrow things down to 30 and I much preferred Papa Don't Preach!
February 10, 20223 yr Thanks for hosting Gezza, it has been very interesting following the results of the vote on the thread! Very happy that Don't You Want Me, my 29-pointer finished up in second place, and great to see my 26-pointer Like A Prayer win! Like A Prayer is great, although Live To Tell is my absolute favourite Madonna 80s track (now THAT could have been a contender for my 30 points if it had topped the charts!) February 10, 20223 yr I liked 'Like A Prayer' when I was younger, and the dance cover by Mad'house in 2002. 'Don't You Want Me' is very good too. Can we do the Buzzjack's favourite 70s #1 next please!? I can think of a very likely winner for that but it would still be interesting to do. Edited February 10, 20223 yr by mdf
February 11, 20223 yr Thanks for all the hard work Gezza, and a good result. Human League and Madonna suffer from over-exposure a bit, so they got less points from me than they might have 10 or 20 years ago, but I still love them. Looking at that top 10, the only one I havent seen sung live in concert is Abba (got my tickets for hologram tour) and the PSB's, Human League and Madonna I've seen multiple times. Result!
