Hmmm ABBA the worst of the top 5 of 1980 for me but not surprised to see it top 10. Just kinda glad it’s not top 5

This Abba song is so cheesy in a bad way for me.

'The Winner Takes It All' is a stunning ballad

I know ABBA have denied that the song is about in-band divorce, but they obviously know a thing or two about the subject anyway so I can really feel the emotion poured in, what a knock-out vocal performance from Agnetha *.* not quite my favourite from them, that is 'Lay All Your Love On Me', but another superb 'Super Trouper' single.

Rich giving it 30 points definitely makes sense!

BuzzJack's top 3 #1s of 1980 were all in the top tier of my votes and I also gave points to 'Ashes To Ashes'.

Indeed!! At the time, as a 13-year-old, I wasn't massively aware of the Pet Shop Boys' legacy but as time has gone on, it feels weird to type that. 'Progress' Wembley tickets being an absolute nightmare to get hold of is a reflection of how big that Take That era was at the time, with Robbie rejoining :drama:

Yeh as Dot says does make sense and Take That are one of the biggest boy bands the UK has ever produced!

not an ABBA fan in general so didn't vote for this one, think it was the only one I didn't vote for from the ones left

so happy with the remaining 6, voted for them all

awww was hoping it would go top 5 and dandy would have given 30 points too

I adore Sun Always Shines On TV, I rate it as amongst the greatest 5 records of the 80's, it's epic, unusual, soaring and those vocals and that production, woah! Some days I think it's the greatest record of the 80s', some days Tears For Fears Everybody Wants To Rule The World, MJ's Billie Jean or PSB's What Have I Done.

a-ha were always good, sometimes great, Take On Me is fab, Hunting High & Low wonderful, Manhattan Skyline tinglingly dramatic, and a-ha are well worth seeing in concert, the last time I caught them was on the day of my grandma's funeral so it was strangely moving and oddly out-of-body at the same time...

funnily I went to see A-ha live, can't remember when it was, but it was a goodbye tour, cos they were spltting up

only that a few years later they went back together :D

think they've done a few farewell tours thru the years :D

If you ever thought ABBA were a twee watered-down disco act, The Winner Takes It All is the song most likely to change your mind. It's all there in Agnetha's delivery, almost choking on the words with the story clearly so close to home, while the music forces her to put on a brave face and keep the show going on. Great to see that more than a third of us put it in our top 10.

I thought I was quite a restrained ABBA Stan giving TWTIA 28 and Super Trouper 18!

The other amazing thing about The Winner Takes It All is its musical simplicity. The verses and chorus are just variations of the same little motif over and over.

1980 ended up being my favourite year; I voted for 6 including 2 ABBA, 2 Blondie, a Bowie and a Lennon.

'The Winner Takes It All' is a stunning ballad

I think I mentioned this in the ABBA rate but I do feel like The Winner Takes It All laid the template for a lot of my favourite music. Steps in general of course - but particularly One For Sorrow and After The Love Has Gone - would not exist without that song, but even the whole Scandi heartbreak genre that artists like Robyn and Lykke Li excel at wouldn't be the same without this track. It's absolutely stunning for me, and I'm so glad it made the top ten.

My 29 pointer is still in, and I've always ranked the two pretty level, I gave ABBA the 30 as I knew the other would be more popular anyway, but we'll see where it ends up.

Not a huge Abba fan but ‘The Winner Takes It All’ is stunning and beautiful!

The second most popular No 1 of 1987, indeed of all their chart toppers, and in terms of festive chart topper of the 80s! It collects maximum points from both West and Jason as it misses out on a top 5 finish.

Just realised that the top 6 all featured in my top 15 songs and that my top 3 are all still in - good going for taste Buzzjack *.*
I predicted top 3 result for "The Winner Takes It All" and "Always On My Mind".
So the best PSB song will be the highest and I voted for each of the top 5! :cheer: I haven't quite forgiven Always On My Mind for keeping Fairytale Of New York from Christmas #1, plus I prefer the Elvis version, but when such a great act are as on top of their game as PSB were at this point, it's something to be celebrated.

Always On My Mind is one of those great cover versions that really re-imagines a song so it has to get credit for that, but like I said before its probably the last one left that came under "like and appreciate" rather than "really love" to me.

It's A Sin to pull of a complete surprise win?
