ABBA_-_The_Winner_Takes_It_All-Elaine.png

Highest Scores: 11: (Jester, Nina West, gooddelta, PaulM1983, Run for Cover, Herbs, Feel the Fever, Aaron, ___∆___, Lukuzz, J00prstar, Jade, Liam, Liam.k), 10: (Qween, spiceboy, dandy, LM Fan, Slowdown73, Dante77, JulianT, Cameron, n4yr, Eduardo), Lowest Scores: 5: (Hide&Seek)

So there you have it at the #1 spot is the very fittingly titled - The Winner Takes It All, released in July 1980 as the lead single from ABBA's 7th studio album Super Trouper The song was written by Benny & Bjorn with Agnetha singing the lead vocals, reflecting on the end of a relationship. The men started writing the track in the summer of 1979 in a cottage on the island of Viggsö. According to Andersson, the idea for the song suddenly came up "from old ideas, from old small musical pieces" they had. The demo had an original title of "The Story Of My Life" with the first arrangements being uptempo, but felt that it was too stiff & then recorded another demo using nonsense French words for lyrics & the rest was history. Bjorn has denied that the song was about his divorce from Agentha, which many speculate to this day is what the song's about. Agentha has stated that this is her favourite ABBA song she has ever recorded.

Upon release the song was a major success for the group by topping the charts in Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, South Africa & UK. It reached top 5 peaks in Finland, Sweden, Austria, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Zimbabwe & France. In the USA it became the group's 4th & final top 10 hit by reaching a #8 peak & spent 26 weeks on the charts over there, making this their longest running single there. To date this is ABBA's 5th biggest selling single in UK with sales of 920,000 copies.

A more than fitting #1 ABBA song here with this showstopping number which may be one of the group's most downbeat songs at the start before the pace picks up in the 2nd half. The piano and guitar melodies of the verses are stunning with effective lyrics that really reasonates with you as well as being catchy at the same time. Eveyrthing about is not only memorable, but iconic at same time Everything about this is a masterpiece of pop music & a more than worthy winner on this rate. I would like to thank everybody for taking part & making this rate & results a resounding success.

Can't begrudge 'Lay All Your Love On Me' missing out when the champion is so strong in its own right too, the power of 'The Winner Takes It All' gives me chills.

Thanks very much for running this rate! Thoroughly enjoyed reading all the commentaries and response posts

Fantastic hosting and fantastic top two. Both got my 11!

'Lay All Your Love On Me' has always been my favourite (although 'The Day Before You Came' is snapping at its heels these days). There's something so celestial about it.

Thank you very much for hosting this Nina! The commentaries have been fab and it’s been really exciting.

I didn’t realise there were so many ABBA fans on here until they announced the new material, and it was through reading the threads about that I stumbled on this! It’s been great doing this with such a discerning group.

I hadn’t realised Lay All Your Love On Me was so popular at all - it is great but it’s not in my absolute A* league.

What an incredible score for The Winner Takes It All. It must have had far more 11s than scores below 10. A very worthy winner and it will be interesting to see how that and Super Trouper do in the Best #1 of the 80s rate!

I'm glad that it wasn't close enough that a rate from me would have made a difference x (I'd have given TWTIA a pretty high score as well anyway though, good winner).

'Lay All Your Love On Me' is just such a perfect song, easily up there with my favourite pop songs of all time and the best ABBA song by a country mile. Happy to see it coming as high as 2nd here despite not being one of their biggest hits, I've never been sure before if it's as highly regarded by other people on here.

The correct top 2. I would rank them differently depending on my mood. They're just absolutely perfect pop songs.

Thanks for all the work you put into doing this. The write ups were great and it was lots of fun!

Thanks a lot for hosting Nina, great results and brilliant write-ups.

The Winner Takes It All is one of my all-time favourite songs, and laid the blueprint for many others, safe to say Steps wouldn't have existed in the form they did without this song (they certainly never would have released One For Sorrow and After The Love Has Gone), and Scandinavian pop would be a very different sounding genre indeed.

Correct winner, amazing song ! great to see Lay All Your Love On Me so high too it’s a fab song
