Commentary

This has manged to get very high thanks to its unorthodox chart run - it scraped the Top 40 as a track from their EP, and stuck around as it continued to make an impression on me right up until the point it was made a single, when it shot up into the Top 10 and was very unlucky to miss the top spot. It's a really interesting track, with two almost distinct parts - the melody and timing changing completely midway through the song - and that's definitely a big part of its charm. I don't think I've heard many songs like it!

Commentary

Another fantastic song by an artist I'd all but forgotten about until this video popped up in a chart recap video I was watching. It's just such a smooth song, Allday's voice is at its absolute best here and there's just something about the line 'you will avoid the void' that gets it going round in your head over and over again. (it almost made me disappointed that his new single 'Door' didn't have the line 'you will adore the door' in it :kink: ) This managed five very well-deserved weeks at the top of my chart!

Commentary

Our highest-charting non-#1 makes it to Number 4 this year, and whilst this tune never made the Top 5 it has also managed overhalf a year in my Top 100. It's one of those occurrences in which an artist you've always been incredibly indifferent to releases something that is absolutely fantastic and makes you completely reconsider your view of them. This song is so funky, all the beats are places in all the right places and the chorus, which almost seems like a plea, is something you just want to scream out with him. I cannot fault this song in any way, shape or form!

Void is a lovely track, I've heard a few recent(ish) songs from Allday and I like the direction he's gone in recently, I should probably listen to more!

That Glass Animals song is great, I wish it could've been a hit but I guess Heat Waves will forever overshadow anything else they put out now! Stop Making This Hurt is another favourite of mine, as a long-time Bleachers fan their album was a bit disappointing but it's a real standout track.

I was hoping I Don't Wanna Talk might get a Top 100 spot at least given the success of Heat Waves but sadly not :( And yes, Stop Making This Hurt does really stand out - for me its the standout of everything I've heard from them so far! Thanks Ansel ^_^

Commentary

After managing a #3 which managed #1 in the EOY, Amy Shark now gets a #1 which reaches #3 in the EOY :magic: The first song to break the 6-weeks-at-#1 mark, this one had a slow start after a few singles that didn't grab me as much as the last album put her a bit lower down my pecking order. It very quickly became a favourite though, the fast-paced lyrics of the chorus combined with the way the song builds throughout made it a favourite for me this year, and whilst it's so different to I Said Hi it's difficult to compare the two, I would say it's very close to being on a par.

It feels almost criminal that this song isn't #1 given how much I obsessed with it throughout the year, but sadly only one song can get that honour :( It's definitely the most deserving #2 since at least 2018 though. Whilst I'm not too familiar with the original song, the vocals match this synth-y rework so well, in a way that makes it equally enjoyable to belt out the lyrics and to dance like an idiot all the way through the track. Of course I sent it to BJSC, where it did well (but amazingly was only my third highest-peaker of the year!), I really hope it was a discovery to some.

Commentary

By now you've probably worked out that I love a song with lyrics I can just belt out, and this song was perfect for this. I've never really been 'into' Sam Fender, but this song grabbed me with its focus on injustices of the past, and it debuted higher than any of his previous offerings. Very quickly it made #1 in my chart, and was looking to be my favourite non-Top 40 single of the year, before the album came out and it very quickly became my favourite Top 40 single of the year :magic: Even then it looked like it would make a fleeting appearance, but before we knew it it was in the Top 3 and is amazingly stil in the Top 10. Who knew this would happen?! A very deserved EOY #1 here, and I'll certainly be paying more attention to Sam from now on.

That's an amazing chart run for Seventeen Going Under! I was never really into Sam before either, but he deserved better chart fortunes for sure, and he's sure making up for that now. Not only that but SGU is such a deserving smash, brilliant success story for him and hopefully a future classic!
