Here with a casual near midnight drop in Persephonia, it is that time of the year to look back over the hits (and, as it were, the almost-hits) of the year with the 14th annual edition of The Best of BJSC, and our third run of the combined format that replaced the separate TBO & Rejects competitions. The format will be more or less exactly the same as last year so if you remember how that worked you know how it's working this year. :jump:

 

If anyone needs a refresher or is new to the concept of TBO, it's a retrospective contest where you'll all have the opportunity to vote again on a selection of songs entered across the ten contests of 2021 to elect a single winner for the whole year. But before we get to voting on songs that actually did well the first time around, this first qualifiers round is focusing on those songs that sadly fell short of a place in the final of their original contest, giving them a chance for redemption to go on to compete with the bigger fish in the later rounds. The year's 228 DNQs have been whittled down (using an objective and mathematical process - detailed in post 2 in this thread - so apologies to anyone who is missing their favourite rejects, they should have just been rejected a bit less x) to 80 songs, split into two qualifier groups of 40 songs each.

 

To submit your votes simply PM me (Michael Bubré) your 15 favourite songs from each group that you wish to vote in using the normal BJSC final voting format (18 points for your favourite, 15 for your second favourite, then 13/12/11/10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1 for your third to fifteenth favourites). Obviously as usual you cannot vote for your own song(s). Links to the songs are all provided to refresh your memory, or hear the songs for the first time as it were (for I know not all have the time or inclination to listen to opposite semi DNQs x), and hopefully someone shall kindly provide some Spotify and YouTube playlists soon as well (edit: thanks to Dan and Jordan for their playlists as usual, now also embedded in this post). I'll post the results next Thursday, so setting the deadline as 23:59 on Wednesday 15th December (although I'll accept any votes that come in the day of results at a reasonable time too).

 

Anyone who entered any contest this year is eligible to vote and you may vote in either Qualifier Group 1 or Qualifier Group 2, or both, whether or not you have a song competing in them. I encourage people to vote in both if they can. Be warned that failing to vote in a qualifier group you have a song in will incur a 15 point deduction for that song. That'll probably be a lot of people so think of it more as submitting votes being equivalent to giving yourself 15 extra points. The top 16 songs from each qualifier group will advance to the quarter-finals round and keep alive their dream of following Cavetown in 2019 and Death Grips in 2020 as scrappy underdogs making it all the way to the grand final to compete against the year's winners.

A reminder of how the songs for this were decided for anyone who is curious and does not remember from last year (don't worry about this post if it is confusing, just trust the process x):

 

- All songs that finished one place short of qualifying for their original contest (19th place in the BJSC 137 semi-finals, 21st place in all other semi-finals of the year) qualified for this first round automatically. This includes 2 songs each from Danæviia and Republic of Adonia.

- All countries who DNQed at least once during the year have their statistically best performing DNQ represented here (that is the one with the highest semi-final position and, in the case of a tie, the highest number of points), if that is not already covered by the previous bullet point.

- Countries who entered more than once during the year but did not have any qualifiers also have their second best performing DNQ represented. This applies to Cadelicia, Eastovka, Sandénia and Zaminton, and is as part of the rules that ensure every country has at least 2 songs appearing at some point during the overall TBO contest (apart from those who only entered once during the year obvz).

- The above 3 bullet points resulted in 79 eligible songs which was an inconvenient odd number so there is also one wildcard entry, which I chose to be the highest points scoring DNQ of the year which was not already eligible by the above criteria. The lucky song in question was Jupiterdonia 137.

 

The second round of TBO (the quarter-finals) will also have 80 songs in total, comprising the 32 that qualify from this round and 48 others which were selected by a similar process:

 

- All countries who did not have any top 5 hits during the year will be represented in the quarter-finals by their best performing qualifier.

- Arcodesia and Varakë will also have their second best performing qualifier included, due to them being in the edge case of having fewer than 2 top 5 hits but also no DNQs.

- A wildcard was needed for this round due to an odd number as well, that shall be the highest scoring non top 5 hit of the year that was not eligible by the above criteria which turned out to be N DNTN 134.

The third round (semi-finals) and fourth round (grand final) also have songs already qualified to them which are a little less complicated to explain. The semi-finals will comprise 40 qualifiers from the quarter-finals plus the 40 songs which finished between 2nd and 5th during the year. Then finally the grand final will comprise 30 qualifiers from the semi-finals plus the year's 10 winners.

also vote for FAKE LAND, that's a lot more of an exciting DNQ entrant than I had last year.

I know it’s a bit short notice, but if anyone would like me to host a listenthrough of the first qualifier round this evening on synctube I can do as I’m free. I guess less people would be interested but I don’t mind doing it.

It feels so odd to me that people could potentially vote for Hello Saferide here (they won't lol), but can't vote for Self Esteem which I'd have been so curious about how it would have done in TBO!

 

Oh well, throwing my entire weight behind ishi vu then! And obviously all of my other top five and DNQ faves *.*

It's not as odd when you consider that the format is explicitly a merger of the old separate TBO and Rejects contests - I actually forgot that Self Esteem finished so low in her contest, I expect it could have done quite well under the old TBO format but nevermind!

 

The format can always be amended again next year if people have issues with it, it seemed to work well enough the last two years though. For what it's worth Godford is not the song I'd have chosen to represent myself either but it was unambiguously my biggest hit of the year so! Here for some Rejects justice for 'Porcelain' tho.

I'm going to have to try and vote in both as all my favourite non qualifying songs that I've listened to most appear in the opposite one to my own entry

Yeah true, and I do accept that no format is going to please all the people all the time. It's a decent compromise and I really do appreciate this format for giving everyone a fair chance. It obviously does compile all of the biggest hits on paper but I guess there will always just be a small few cases where certain songs that could have smashed TBO are excluded.

I'm so impressed with how she's blown up this year, I got her new book today which is essentially her thoughts and iPhone notes since 2014 but makes for fascinating reading about the development of the Self Esteem project.
