December 30, 20213 yr Author Connection is one of my absolute favourite tracks from the era, I'd definitely have that one quite a lot higher! I suspect you’ll all be questioning my Britpop taste soon!
December 30, 20213 yr Well we'll see! There's lots I like from the era and I suspect I'll say that about 20 of them deserve top 10
December 30, 20213 yr This is not easy. There's so many border line bands, and pre-Britpop bands that released music during the Britpop period. I'll just have to be very liberal with my list :D Edited December 30, 20213 yr by Colm
December 30, 20213 yr Connection is an enormous BOP! I have to admit Elastica are one of the Britpop bands where I don't know a huge amount of their discography but i've loved Connection since I first heard it.
December 30, 20213 yr Author 45. Gene - Olympian Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 18 Gene first came to my attention on the seminal BBC show 'Britpop Now' (hosted by Damon Albarn). They had been building their influence for a couple of years, including the support for Pulp on tour, but the release of their debut album and its title track pushed them into the public consciousness. They were heavily influenced by the Smiths and you can really hear this on Olympian in particular, however their light shone brightly but burned itself out quickly and I feel they were overshadowed by the Britpop giants. jbh6jTI8tfE
December 31, 20213 yr Elastica were great, fav track possibly Stutter But from day 1 I got the feeling they were not gonna last long
December 31, 20213 yr Great to see Geneva in the list. One of the bands from that era I most regret never seeing live. Good to see the truncated version, Gene, in there as well. I saw the live many times in the 90s and they were always good value.
December 31, 20213 yr As far as I know both Martin Rossiter and Annie Holland still live in Brighton but I haven't seen her around town for years now. Other Britpop era 'stars' who can regularly be seen about include Louise Wener, Jake Shillingford, Gaz Coombes, and I guess you could include Zoe Ball by association
December 31, 20213 yr I didn't realise Gaz Coombes lived here as well. Yeah, although I think he has a place in Oxford still too. He has a star on the Walk of Fame at the Marina as well There's been and still is a whole bunch of non-Britpop musicians here too - McCartney, Dave Gilmour, Tim Booth, Robert Smith, Norman Cook, David Van Day, Adele, Captain Sensible, Kevin Rowland, David Gray, Phil from Orbital, half of Pop Will Eat Itself, all of Gaye Bykers on Acid, Nick Cave, Leo Sayer, Nigel Kennedy, to name a few. Cave and Kennedy have moved away now. I've never spotted Leo Sayer, Adele or Nigel Kennedy but bumped in to or seen all the others at least once. Mike from Royal Blood is at gigs quite often too but he's a local so it doesn't count. Same for the Levellers, Architects etc. It's actually quite the draw for musicians.
January 1, 20223 yr imagine going to the supermarket and bumping into Robert Smith :) wonder how he looks like in normal clothes and without makeup :) would love to meet David Grey too
January 1, 20223 yr Author 44. Supergrass - Sun Hits The Sky Release: 1997 Chart Peak: 10 Ahhh Supergrass! The punky Monkees-que cheeky chappies from Oxford. The band hot the big time in 1995 on the the release of their debut album I Should Coco (Parlophone's biggest selling debut album since the Beatles) and a certain single which will appear much later in the countdown. Sun Hits the Sky was the third single from their second album In It For The Money and I chose this over Richard III as I think Sun.. is much more euphoric and more in the spirit of Britpop and Supergrass. They would release their second best song later in the 90s (Moving) bit that was well out of the age of Britpop. OJ8TYNpJdLg
January 1, 20223 yr Never heard of that Gene band or that song but it’s really lovely, reminds me of the Smiths! Also really love the Supergrass track a classic for me!
January 2, 20223 yr was never a big fan of Supergrass, though I really liked Moving from their 3rd album
January 2, 20223 yr Author 43. The Boo Radleys – Wake Up Boo! Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 9 Slightly on the fence if this is Britpop, but given how much I love this song it was in! The best band ever named after a character from To Kill A Mockingbird, the Boos had some success before Wake Up...! (The wonderful Lazarus) but this euphoric guitar pop track about the change from Summer to Autumn really hit the big time. Its sort of an allegory of Britpop in a way, making the most of a fleeting moment before it's gone. YJXPTnPmm78
January 2, 20223 yr Yeh Boo I’d def Brit pop for me, reminds me of the Chris evans breakfast show during that era!
January 3, 20223 yr Yeah, although I think he has a place in Oxford still too. Mike from Royal Blood is at gigs quite often too but he's a local so it doesn't count. Same for the Levellers, Architects etc. It's actually quite the draw for musicians. There are definitely plenty of them living here. I've just not managed to see them  I'm not sure how much of a link some of the people on the Walk Of Fame have with Brighton.
