Echobelly were good... I think that Dark Therapy was always my favourite of theirs, I love the swooning nature of it

Some Might Say not amongst my fave Oasis songs of the era, but the Mansun popping up is good :) And lols at Noel Gallagher slagging off the Abba return when he blatantly borrowed a melody from The New Seekers coke advert chart-topper 23 years later for one of his hits. Some Might Say that was a pointless return... :P

I'm still hoping No Way Sis are in this countdown...

32. James – She’s A Star

JamesShe'sAStar.jpg

Release: 1997 Chart Peak: 9

James are, of course, most well known for their 1991 hit Sit Down.

So what are they doing on a Britpop countdown? Well, before the launch of their 7th studio album Whiplash in Spring 1997, James released lead single She's A Star. The song is defiantly Britpop to me - its vaguely Beatles sounding and is a clear inroad into the sound with piano and guitar. Its almost Suede-esque - a beautiful track and a great second wind for the band.

Whiplash is a great album- "Tomorrow" is probably my go to but that's a great choice!

I'm a big fan of Waltzing Along as well - though to me She's A Star is more of a Britpop sound.

She’s a Star is great, sure the best James track during the britpop era

Good call! :D

Also a fan of Tomorrow and Waltzing Along. I have Whiplash. I don't think I ever listened to it.

Give it a whirl. I think there's only 1 track on it which is a bit meh.

‘She’s a Star’ is a quality track how on Earth did it chart so low?

I always kind of considered ‘Sit Down’ as Britpop as well just before it began!

Having been very familiar with the original version in 1989 it always sounded a bit like Morrissey fronting Deacon Blue

It charted at number 9, but can’t edit the post as it wants me to remove the picture. I’ll fix later after work.

Shakermaker?

yes that's the one, think it keeps Roger Cook & Roger Greenaway in comfort in their old age these days... :D Not that they really need the extra income given the long list of huge hits they wrote and had hits with (they were alias popstars David & Jonathan and later on Blue Mink).

31. Super Furry Animals – Something 4 The Weekend

Sfa-something4theweekend.jpg

Release: 1996 Chart Peak: 18

Welsh rockers Super Furry Animals were on the fringe of the Britpop scene (part of the 'cool Cymru' movement in the mid-90s) but released their acclaimed album Fuzzy Logic in 1996. Something 4 The Weekend is the best know single from the album (although their biggest hit, Juxtaposed With U was released in 2001). They released their, arguably best known album Radiator in 1997 (just 4 days after Oasis's arrogant and bloated album Be Here Now) but the best track from that album Play It Cool was just pipped by Something... for me.

Apparently, the packaging of the single features a quote in Welsh, 'Bydded Ara deg mae dal iâr', which roughly translates into English as 'Slowly is the way to catch a chicken'!

The critical acclaim of the Super Furry Animals sadly didn't really translate into sales and chart positions and they are a sadly more forgotten band from the era.

Much better than the other Something For The Weekend that came out in summer '96.

Not quite my favourite SFA track but so close. Fuzzy Logic is a great album but the single version of this track is the better take.

Plus their tank was awesome
