That SFA track is great, they are such an underrated band... and contrary to Severin, I also love the other Something For The Weekend that was out at the same time too ^_^

INTERLUDE

Just missed out Part 2

So there will be 4 sections of songs that missed out my countdown for various reasons! Here is the first interlude between 31 and 30:

Blur - Country House

Country_House_CD_single.jpg
Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 1

Well, I couldn't do a Britpop countdown without commenting on the big BRITPOP BATTLE! BLUR VS OASIS! NORTH VS SOUTH! POSH VS WORKING CLASS! etc

When it comes down to it, neither Country House (Chimney Sweep Chas and Dave music) or Roll With It (Oasis Quo) are stellar or the best output from either band in 1995 by far. But, Country House is the better of the 2 tracks still for me and was the one I bought at the time from Our Price Penzance when I was on holiday in August 1995. Country House is probably the epitome of Britpop, the second number 1 of the 'genre' and its all colourful nonsense and silly lyrics (with some Prozac/Balzac rhyming!). The video is like a who's who of lads/TFI Friday mid-90s culture and you can see the band are even faintly embarrassed by the whole thing in the video. Its very much a moment in (a much better) time.

There was much better on the Great Escape album, more on that later.

=========================================

Sleeper - Vegas

SleeperVegasCover.jpg
Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 33

Vegas was the last release from the wonderful album Smart and is a bout a guy that tries of living in a dingy bedsit, flies to Las Vegas and meets Frank Sinatra! Sleeper were re-recording Vegas the same time Blur were in the studio and Graham Coxon actually guest saxophone-d and was credited as Morgan C.Hoax (and anagram of his name).

Number 30 coming up from tomorrow :D
The Super Furries were great and didn't get anything like the success they deserved :( Add me to the list of people who love the Divine Comedy track as well.
I do like the Divine Comedy track. I just think the SFA one is much better. Maybe I worded it poorly

30. Kula Shaker - Tattva

Tattvacd.jpg

Release: 1996 Chart Peak: 4

Tattva, a Sanskrit word meaning 'thatness', 'principle', 'essence', 'reality' or 'truth', was the debut single from physcadelic Britpop band Kula Shaker. A pretty divisive band and song and some negative press, the song debuted at number 4, which is pretty impassive for a new band. This was a bit offside for Britpop and again, I am not sure it is even part of the genre. Despite this, Tattva is great and the follow up Hey Dude did bigger and better things by reaching number 2 on the charts and set the album, K, up for moderate success. I am still pretty fond of the B side, Dance In Your Shadow, which is a total ripoff of Norwegian Wood.

Their lead singer is apparently an arrogant tosser, but that never stopped Oasis!

Tattva is one that I bought and then went off quite quickly... I do still like Hey Dude!, Grateful When You're Dead and Hush though from their singles.

The only Kula Shaker track I like is their cover of Billy Joe Royal's Hush.

Impressed you managed to avoid mentioning Hayley Mills though.

I kinda like Tattva, but for me thats not really Britpop

Their only other song I can recall is their Hush cover

I tried to avoid discussing much about the lead singer (and his relatives)

29. Cast – Walkaway

Release: 1996 Chart Peak: 9

Walkaway is probably Cast's best known song and the 4th single from 'All Change'. It was also their first top 10 hit and has since been used for football clips (i.e. walking away after losing etc, see Euro '96 - its the bad ending 3 Lions!).

This is by far my favourite Cast song and their most endearing track and quite the anthem. Just lovely.

‘Walk away’ is a classic but I wouldn’t have been able to tell you the band that performed it. Great song which should have been top 5!
don't think I ever heard that song, just tells what a big Cast fan I was :D but seems nice enough on 1st listen

Juxtaposed With U is classic and I also kudos the Divine Comedy (still good, the new single is in my itunes basket)

Tattva topped my charts, love it, and Cast's Walk Away is fab too. As I have never cared what is or isn't "cool" to the music press trendy journos I was a fan of both bands, and Hayley Mills is a legend of 60's Disney movies to those of a certain age, so happy to giver her credit for Kula Shaker who wouldn't exist without her, and also her quality actor father John Mills, they were both lovely....

28. Ash – Girl From Mars

Girl_From_Mars.jpg

Release: 1995 Chart Peak: 11

Girl From Mars was h second release from Ash's debut album 1977 and it was actually performed on TOTP just 2 weeks after the end of their A Level exams! Its quite a heavy guitar indie song but its also quite sweet at the core and was inspired by Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Pixie’s Trompe le Monde and David Bowie. The song has been used variably for NASA's hold music (!) and in an episode of The Gilmore Girls.

By far, I think, Ash's best song, though not their biggest hit of the 90s.

Walk Away has a great opening and the rest isn't too bad either. I think it's the only Cast song I can tolerate.
