In a 2019 interview with Apple Music, Harry Styles shared a memory from the early days of One Direction. They were in the studio in Sweden working on “What Makes You Beautiful”. First single, the rollercoaster train just starting to climb the track. Someone comes into the room and says there are a couple of girls outside. Why? the band asks. They’re looking for you guys. For One Direction. “And we’re all just like, ‘But we’re in Sweden!’”

 

Ah, the old, “who…us?” routine. Harry! Incorrigibly charming, dreamboat for starry-eyed youth the world over. And, as it turns out, a legitimate force in pop, the kind of artist who could bridge contemporary appeal with classic values in ways that felt fresh but familiar, universal.

 

Part of what had made One Direction so great was that they never shied away from the pleasures of boy-band pop, but never patronised their audiences or fell back on gimmicks, either: Never mind the no-dancing policy; they were writing songs, exploring music as something beyond the show. In his solo career, Styles (born 1994, in Redditch, England) has done much the same, combining soul (“Watermelon Sugar”), confessional soft rock (“Sign of the Times”) and psychedelia (“Sunflower, Vol. 6”) with a modern touch, summarising where pop has been while also pushing it forward. “I’m just trying to go through life being a little less worried about stuff,” he said. “Definitely with working. Raised on Eminem and 50 Cent, Australian rapper Masked Wolf developed a rap style that paired astute, often personal lyricism with clean production values. He slowly built a listenership with a series of stand-alone tracks, hitting streaming numbers in the multimillions with his 2021 single "Astronaut in the Ocean." Masked Wolf was born Harry Michael and grew up in Sydney. By age 13, he was writing his own rap songs, inspired by favorites like Eminem and Kevin Gates. As he grew up, he discovered other rap influences, and worked some of Drake's cool-headed poise and the sinister atmospheres of American trap production into his songs. Early tracks like 2018's "Speed Racer" and 2019's "Vibin'" gave way to tracks that addressed topics such as mental health and peer pressure on songs like "Numb." On the insanely catchy dance-pop bopper “Dance Monkey,” Toni Watson’s high-flying wails instantly grab you. The chart-dominating track from 2019 was inspired by the Australian singer/songwriter’s experience as a full-time busker. Just a year prior, Watson (born in Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne) quit her retail job, packed up her Casio keyboard and loop pedal, and headed north to the surfer town of Byron Bay, where she found her voice playing the streets several hours a day. Måneskin is a beloved and critically-acclaimed young Italian 4-piece-band aged from 18 to 21: Damiano (vocals), Victoria (bass), Thomas (guitar) and Ethan (drums). Måneskin means “moonlight” in Danish, a tribute to the bassist’s origin. Group members have known each other since middle school, but they started playing together only in 2015. Shane Codd is a 23 year old DJ/Producer from Dublin, Ireland. His passion for music began at a young age, when he would hear mixes of 90's and early 2000's Trance and House music from a set vinyl decks in Clondalkin, South Dublin. It was Shane’s interest in this genre that led him to create a playlist on Spotify called ‘Trance Anthems 90s-00s, which has now amassed 79,000 followers. Shane Codd's newest track "Get Out My Head" has seen huge support on social media, it was aired on Dublin's popular radio station 'SPIN 1038' by DJ's Marty Guilfoyle and Laura Bracken, and also on 'Iradio' by Mark McCabe. great to see IWBYS a fair bit higher than Beggin in the end.

 

GOMH is another of the year's dance songs I wasn't so keen on, so of course it ended up as one of the biggest...

Maneskin EOY position wise very similar to The Darkness back in 03! This and 'Zitti' were great. The latter didn't click right away from watching Eurovision surprisingly enough but quickly did on another watch of it lol
