So the whole EOY synctube (an interesting site I'd not heard of til coming on here) gave me a bit of a wacky idea...

As some of you may know using the OCCs retrospective start of the chart this year will be the 70th anniversary of the chart.

I was wondering if people interested in having a weekly synctube hangout to listen to all the past No 1s in order from when it started either after the Friday chart or before first look.

By my rough calculations with a 3 hour session once a week we could get through them all within the year quite comfortably (although I've not finished putting together playlists yet so maths could be out) and 3 hours is probably the longest you'd want something like this. Due to sheer volume I'd suggest just playing the tracks rather than posting chart stats for every No 1.

I'd be happy to host the sessions, if people would be interested? I get there's probably less interest in the really old shit though....

Thoughts?

I’d actually be most interested in the “really old sh*t”! I’ve listened to a lot of number ones over the last year thanks to Gezza’s decade by decade polls and the 00s forum polls, but not pre 1980. Anyway I’d definitely be up for joining in when I can.

sounds like a very big commitment but could be interesting to go through, although there was already something like this for the number ones of the 2010s around this time two years ago.

I’d probably not start it at 6pm though as I for one will be out for that hour to make and eat dinner having just got home from work.

I or a chart mod could make quickie recap posts along the way with the chart run and youtube clip embed but would be way too much to do full chart histories for every number one ever of course

Omg yes I love geeking out about #1s *.* will definitely be there if I can make the timings

A couple of years ago I did weekly sessions for the 2010s #1s as an end of decade event and it was good fun!

It's a big commitment, but something I've been meaning to do anyway, so throwing up a synctube room while doing it isn't to hard. The original idea was to do it in the run up to the anniversary, but thought breaking it down would make much more sense with 1400 songs (probably at least that by time we've finished)!! Feel free to DM me and discuss it more if you want... or starting at 7pm but Friday's still probably a bad night. The chart histories is exactly the reason for going down the more casual listening thing.

Oh wait, do you mean while the things running? That would be great.

That's why I suggested Sunday afternoons as an alternative or Saturday afternoon, instead of Friday nights - or maybe another week night when people are less likely to be out? (early on a weekday is out for me due to work commitments)

I'd be happy to write up lists of the songs played in spoilers before or after with their chart runs, for you guys to post if you want. That's not too much effort on my end.

A week day in the evening would be better than in the weekend imo

But you could also make a poll about best times

Sunday afternoon between 4 and 7 (when the old chart was running) would be best for me :)

I've put a poll up here with a selection of times - hopefully one of them suits most people.

Glad there's someone else who likes the oldies, although I have to be honest I've come across some utter crap already as well as some gems. (Seasons in the Sun, what were they thinking!!)

Btw you guys should check out the Freaky Trigger website where they are reviewing every single number 1 - it’s really good :)
As someone who only started following the UK Charts since 2015, I would be interested to listen to the UK #1s from the past to the present.

Ooh yes, I love this too, although it's sadly very infrequent now and they are still on 2003, I do hope he finishes x

I'd be really interested in this, I don't follow charts much these days, but I really love looking through their history. I think I'd prefer a weekend afternoon/evening though, though I'll go with the majority pick and try and make it if I can.

It may be worth considering changing the time with the seasons. The time before First Look is good at this time of year when it's dark, but not so good in the summer months.

Yeah that's a fair point,

Looks like the old chart slot of 4pm-7pm is comfortably best for people re the poll so far, so let's go with that. I'll do the first session this Sunday

Compiling the reference playlists for this and run into what should have been an obvious issue? Do we skip the likes of Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter, Michael Jackson and R Kelly? Or just warn people when we get to their songs?
I think we still play them with the relevant warnings. I think you can separate the art from the artist.
I agree with that as if you are drawing some line about artist morality it'd have to be necessarily arbitrary. (e.g. I would consider Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and R. Kelly to be well over any such line but think it's a little questionable to put MJ in the same category...)
