I ranked every song below Body lol

Whereas I think I ranked every song above Body

'Merry Christmas' is definitely 'Christmas song by numbers' but I think it's a pretty well executed one, definitely enjoyed it more than I expected to and I wouldn't mind it sticking around.

We don't speak of the LadBaby version obvz.

Well the first ever drill Number One was certainly a moment but it was never going to be Buzzjack’s highlight of the year. All things considered this is a pretty decent showing for it though.

After a few weeks hanging around the Top 20 it shot to the top of the charts thanks to a TikTok challenge and thanks to a remix involving Bugzy Malone, Fivio Foreign, Darkoo, Buni, ArrDee, E1 and ZT (I didn’t need to look that list up, honest). The remix has endured as the more popular version and I do think it is the more interesting track if you listen to the two side by side.

There’s quite a big gap from this to #9, so what will fall next?

Biography

Russ Millions

South London rapper Russ Millions’ energetic delivery has made him a powerhouse in the UK drill scene. Born Shylo Batchelor Ashby Milwood in 1996, the Lewisham MC began trying his hand at rapping in 2016, peppering street tales into his rhymes early on. In 2018, he released his breakthrough hit, “Gun Lean,” a propulsive song named after a viral dance featured in some of the artist’s initial music videos. By 2019, Russ Millions had transitioned from newcomer to cemented fan favorite with the carnal single “Keisha & Becky,” a joint effort with North London rapper/songwriter Tion Wayne that was remixed to feature the who’s who of UK drill: Aitch, Swarmz, Savo, and JAY1. In 2021, Russ Millions and Tion Wayne would join forces again to release “Body,” a frenetic, swaggering track that was remixed multiple times itself, including a version with a braggadocious take from Kentucky MC Jack Harlow. - Apple Music

Tion Wayne

Tion Wayne first started to make a name for himself in 2010 after dropping a handful of videos for various online streaming channels. The Edmonton, North London-based MC quickly started to rise through the ranks of a predominantly D.I.Y. underground scene, and by 2014 delivered his first proper mixtape, Wayne's World. Continuing to push his sound on social media and online video streaming, Wayne had built a loyal following by 2016 and had supported artists such as U.S. rapper Rick Ross and Ghanaian hip-hop artist Sarkodie. His follow-up mixtape, Wayne's World, Vol. 2, was also released that year and saw him joined by the likes of One Acen, Scorcher, and frequent collaborator Afro B. Wayne released the Transition EP in 2017 while also playing a host of live dates across the U.K., including a sold-out show at London's Electric Ballroom. - Apple Music

I hadn’t heard Body until I did this rate. I was kinda confused it was a number 1. I looked up its chart run - 3 weeks @ #1 !
I forgot how this one went until I did the rate. Proof if proof is needed that Tik Tok is for morons!

"English girl named Fiona..."

So now I remember how it goes... but I kind of switch off after that.

Not sure I would have ever thought it made No.1

I don't think someone liking different music to you makes them a moron.

The sea shanty known as “Wellerman” originates from ships owned by the Weller brothers in 19th century New Zealand. A trend of performing the shanty on TikTok became known as “ShantyTok”. A version of the song by British folk group The Longest Johns entered the Top 40 in January the week before Nathan Evans’ version shot into the Top 3. It hovered between Number 2 and 3 for seven weeks before managing a 2 week stint at the top in March on the back of a TV performance.

The official OCC credit for this one was based on the remix featuring 220 Kid and Billen Ted, which was the more popular version on streaming sites but of course departs from the traditional sea shanty style. Interestingly several people said when voting that they prefer the original. In any event this was never going to finish anywhere other than 9th as it was more than 50 points ahead of 10th but also 50 points behind 8th.

Biography

Nathan Evans

Scottish folk singer/songwriter Nathan Evans made waves when his sea shanties went viral on TikTok in 2020, but his memorable voice helped him find fame outside of social media. - Apple Music

220 KID

220 KID is a producer/writer/DJ and artist from the UK. The 220 KID name was born after running 220 miles in bright pink pants for charity, after his beloved Godfather passed away. And after running that 220 miles he knew anything was possible. He was soon scouted as a model and has worked for the likes of Vogue, GQ, Nike, Reebok and many more, whilst continuing to develop and perfect himself as an established writer/producer. Over the past two years 220 KID has been working with Grammy nominated producer Grades, One Bit, Camden Cox, Billen Ted, Danny Shah, Jackson, and the infamous Scott Storch (Pink, Christina Aquilera, Beyonce, Snoop Dogg, Dre, Sean Paul) to name a few. His broad musical ability has allowed him to write and produce with a wide range of artists also, such as Clean Bandit, Alpines, Frenship, Walking On Cars, Sheppard, and Camelphat, He has most recently been working with Daniel Skye, Jess Boykins III, Amanda CY, Gracey, Maverick Sabre, Bryn Christopher and Ivy Adara. Unquestionably 220 KID has a wide range of production skills, from epic string work to dirty house base lines. Alongside his fresh style of lyrical writing, he has the ability to make any pop song that little bit more ‘cool’. He's certainly one to watch. - Spotify

Billen Ted

Billen Ted are a production / writing duo working out of Ealing Studios, London. The duo, previously from Death Metal bands, have spent the last few years transitioning to dance and pop music and have produced / written records for the likes of 220 Kid (Don't Need Love), Hugel (WTF), MNEK, Sleepwalkrs and Melanie C amongst others. They have just released their first record Satisfied, paying homage to the late Prince by doing a feel good version of 'I Feel For You' - Spotify

Tik tokers are just young, but not morons lol poor kids

Funnily yesterday we had a dinner with an English couple with her teen daughters and I asked the girls about music

and was shocked at their knowledge, or lack of, like they had never ever heard about Madonna!

and they didn't know about Queen, Nirvana, Ed Sheeran... but bizarrely they know all those Tiktok songs

so they knew all the lyrics from Body or Ferrari Horses by heart :D

This Wellerman remix was pretty drab although nice to see it eventually go to #1 after sitting patiently behind drivers license for weeks on end.

Longest John's version should have been the one that blew up.

It’s getting serious now as the official Number 1 of the year exits. It spent 11 weeks at the top over the summer and would have managed 13 if not for ACR, and 15 if not for Ed’s own follow up. :gino:

The upbeat number with a catchy riff reminiscent of “Smalltown Boy” surprised many who weren’t expecting something so upbeat as the first single from his upcoming album, and the overall Buzzjack reception was certainly better than it was for many of his monster hits.

So Ed only has 1 of his 4 songs left – will he make the top half at all?

It was probably a harsh statement for me to say yesterday when I have time to think about it but young people nowadays don’t have a clue about music and don’t seek it out like in my day they just hear shite on social media. But I guess if it opens them up to music then maybe it’s a good thing

Shame at Bad Habits being so low.

It was my fave No.1 of the year - not much competition - but not my fave Ed song.

I know Buzzjackers aren't that keen on Ed, but I think maybe this one stuck around too long and people got fed up with it more than anything?

I really like it and it has been everywhere but guess that was to be expected. Was funny how people downplayed it’s success in the opening days.
young people nowadays don’t have a clue about music and don’t seek it out like in my day they just hear shite on social media

Veering off topic I know, but this argument's been used for decades now and it's kinda exhausting to always hear lol. I'm 20 now, my brother's in his mid-teens, and artists like Fleetwood Mac, Queen, The Cure etc are absolutely huge among people our age. There's loads of older songs (Edge of Seventeen, Love Grows, Break My Stride, etc) which get a resurgence specifically because young people are seeking them out and turning them into hits again!

On topic tho, the results have matched my votes exactly so far

Bad Habits is not a bad song, it just got annoying with being overplayed, tiktok campaigns and how long it spent at #1!
Was a nice change up in sound for him at the time but agreed with the consensus it's been totally overplayed to the point of no return. Mind you I never ever got bored of Shape Of You which still surprises me...

It did manage a good score and was as high as 3rd part way through the voting, but Ed’s highest song bows out in 7th. The second single from “=” proved to be quite a slow burner just like its predecessor, with its streams not peaking until its eighth week when the album dropped.

For more than half the voters, 29 of 54, this was the best of Ed’s 4 Number Ones this year. 17 voters rated “Bad Habits” highest of the 4, 6 “Merry Christmas” and 2 “Sausage Rolls for Everyone”.

I mentioned right at the beginning that 6 of the songs were reshuffle chart #1s, and lo and behold they are indeed our top 6. But who has missed the top 5 by a whisker? Only 6 voters have lost their 12 pointer so far, but the next song to be revealed managed 8 top scores on its own…
