between Everything I do and Please forgive me, he also had Thought I'd die and gone to Heaven which was pretty big

and Do I have to say the words as final single from WUTN

he basically had 2 kind of songs, the ballads like Everything I do, Please forgive me... and the rockier tracks like Can't stop this thing we started

his flops before Everything I Do were also a mix of ballads and uptempo rock songs

Yes, there was that one, I tend to think of Thought I'd Died... as more middling-paced than slow ballad, prob cos I quite liked it  TBH though even his very best record (Run To You) wasn't a big hit, and his anthem Summer of '69 didn't even go top 40, and his US chart-topper Heaven only just top 40. 2 number ones and many other biggies in the 90's though, and he moved to the UK to live, so yay Bry :)

22 - Undercover Baker Street

11th best seller of 1992

Chart Run

7-9-4-3-3-2-3-3-5-10-15-28-33-57

Like Dr Alban before them, this was held in second place by The Shamen's Ebeneezer Goode

Dance ruled the charts in 1992, especially in August, September and October. The top 3 consisted only of dance music tracks for 5 consecutive weeks from 6th September.

21 - Startdust - Music Sounds Better With You

11th best seller of 1998

Chart Run

2-2-4-8-9-12-13-19-23-20-21-23-30-35-38-45-63-68-62-51-51-50-63

Breaking looped house in the mainstream and influencing dance music for many many years afterwards is this number 2 hit that couldn't overtake Boyzone's million selling No Matter What.

I was gutted when Stardust stalled at #2, it was such an influential track and because it was my era for clubbing it felt like a really huge moment in dance music. I remember we would hear it about 10 times on a night out and never tire of it. I still think it's the best example of the genre and I listened to it so often in 1998 that it must be one of my most heard tracks ever.

20 - 2 Unlimited - Get Ready For This

11th best seller of 1991

Chart Run

36-19-6-2-3-3-2-3-5-12-21-34-31-27-51

Into the top 20, and the start of a very successful few years for 2 Unlimited.

Bryan Adams strikes for the third time in this run down holding them at number 2. Once they overcome him, Vic Reeves and the Wonderstuff get in the way with Dizzy.

The dance mix of Unbreak My Heart was far superior than the dreary original.

The official theme for the soccer world cup in 1990, this became the biggest selling single of 1990 that didn't get to number 1. Elton's Sacrifice outsold it at every turn.

I totally disagree.

Another 1994 single with staying power, outlasting Mariah's Without You but not before Doop had replaced her at the top.

That's it for songs that finished outside the end of year top 10s.

How many of the final 17 do you think you can predict?

Use spoiler tags, please.

Off the top of my head, with no idea what order they will finish in:

Torn, Missing, Wonderwall, Crazy For You, I'm Too Sexy, How Do I Live, Insanity, What Is Love, That Don't Impress Me Much, Ghetto Superstar, Children, Mysterious Girl, I Swear... and can't think of any others without cheating!

Very good - I'm sure you'd get the rest with some thought. Predict a top3, perhaps?

the Baker Street cover was like crapping on the Mona Lisa. The original is perfect in every way and there's just no point trying... :teresa:

Stardust is fabulous, I was still hearing it in clubs in the early 2000's. The Sign is also fab. Nessun Dorma is damn fine. 2 Unlimited is OK....

Without looking at any EOY lists, some of them are:

That Don't Impress Me Much, Torn, Truly Madly Deeply, Children, Mysterious Girl, Missing, Wonderwall, Insanity...

and my predicted top 3 is

1 I'm Too Sexy, 2 I Swear, 3 How Do I Live?

Oh and also

All I Want For Christmas Is You

- although like one or two others of these, I'm fairly sure it was given an EOY position outside the top 10 at the time.

17 - Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply

10th best seller of 1998

Chart Run

4-5-8-9-9-8-5-5-5-7-6-11-14-17-20-23-26-28-37-48-51-63-72

First of Dandy*s mysteries solved.

1998 had plenty of loitering singles and while this was yoyoing up and down there were two other songs that were bobbing up and down along side it - Celine's My Heart Will Go On and a song further up this chart.

Along with My Hear Will Go On, Brim Full of Asha and Aqua's Doctor Jones prevented Truly Madly Deepy from hitting the top spot in its first week.

16 - Oasis - Wonderwall

10th best seller of 1995

Chart Run

2-3-4-5-8-11-10-7-6-5-6-9-18-22-25-32-30-43-59-67...etc

10th best seller of 1995 but also 51st of 1996 when it took in 290,000 of its sales.

By the end of 1998, Wonderwall had spent 72 weeks in the top 100 - obviously this was done in an era of 100% physical units sold, which is truly phenomenal.

We have Robson and Gerome to thank for Wonderwall not being a chart topper, with their Up on the Roof.

This needs to be used as a reminder anytime someone suggests the British public's lack of taste is a new thing.

Robson and Jerome also keep Pulp's Common People off number 1 with Unchained Melody.

Much GRRR.
