Biography

Nicki Minaj

Few artists have impacted 21st century rap like Nicki Minaj. Born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad and Tobago in 1982 but raised mostly in Queens, Minaj attended Manhattan’s prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (the inspiration for the movie Fame) before trying to make it as an actor— a past evidenced by the deep performative streak that runs through her music today. Turning to rap in her twenties, Minaj quickly became one of the brightest stars in Lil’ Wayne’s Young Money universe. Her work—shapeshifting, ferocious, cartoonish, and often filled with oddball voices and alter egos—is as capable of breaking hearts (“Super Bass”) as it is detaching heads (her breakout verse on Kanye West’s 2010 “Monster,” in which she arguably outshined both West and fellow guest Jay-Z). Minaj’s electrifying presence has also made her a secret weapon in the pop world, where she's just as likely to share credits with David Guetta and Justin Bieber as Ludacris and Future. On top of her own success, Minaj helped rap—and rap audiences—look past narratives of gritty realism for something fluid and playful, but no less genuine or powerful. Railing against the double standard faced by women in entertainment, the outspoken Minaj once told MTV, “You have to be a beast. That’s the only way they respect you.” - Apple Music

Lil Baby

The story goes that Lil Baby (born Dominique Jones in 1994) didn’t even really want to rap. He’d had encouragement—Pee and Coach K, the Atlanta kingmakers/Quality Control heads who helped launch Migos, had been on him since he was a teenager hustling dice in the street—but Baby wasn’t interested. But two years on a possession charge gave him more time to think than he wanted. Then the work came fast: Within a year of starting to rap, he’d released six mixtapes and a full-length album, 2018’s Harder Than Ever. (Young Thug, an early booster, paid him to spend time in the studio instead of the streets.) Compared to his Atlanta peers (Thug, Gunna, Migos, etc.), Baby’s persona was muted: He shrugged off fashion shows, didn’t have tattoos (he didn’t want potential business partners from the buttoned-up, white world thinking he was something he wasn’t), and kept his boasts mild: “I never call myself a G.O.A.T./I leave that love to the people,” he raps on “Emotionally Scarred.” But the lyricism was there, as were the low-key intensity and no-frills ethic that have become his hallmark. By the end of 2020, he’d been nominated for a Grammy, made the chart-topping album My Turn, and was named Artist of the Year at the Apple Music Awards. “I don’t wanna be comin’ from where I come from all the way right here to be a nothin’,” he told Apple Music around the release of My Turn. “I feel like I’m past that stage.” - Apple Music

Well having just listened to it for the first time, I can safely say that will be no loss to the Top 40.

Not much of interest this week but Point of View and Da Funk in the retro charts

Now the signed CDs will be added there's no excuse if The Joker & The Queen misses #1 now, it has every possible advantage over We Don’t Talk About Bruno lol

Biography

Put a piano in front of Charlie Puth and the soul-pop crooner will come up with a hitmaking hook in a heartbeat. Born in 1991, the New Jersey-raised talent took to the keys early, thanks to his mother, who began teaching him piano at age four. By 10, he was studying jazz; at 12, he discovered the power of his voice: "I would go to church and hear the same hymnals and gospel songs," he told Apple Music. "I totally attribute my absolute pitch to church music." A decade later, Puth earned a degree in music production and engineering from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, but by then, he was already a viral video star and a signee to talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres' label eleveneleven. He eventually signed with Atlantic and co-wrote and co-produced two major collaborations: the swaying doo-wop bop "Marvin Gaye" with Meghan Trainor and the powerful Wiz Khalifa team-up "See You Again", which became one of 2015's defining hits. On his 2016 debut album, Nine Track Mind, Puth showed off more sleek pop prowess with "One Call Away" and the Selena Gomez-featuring "We Don't Talk Anymore". He'd stretch his range—and Rolodex—even further on 2018's Voicenotes, a thrilling set of bass-driven R&B and electro-funk that includes co-writes with Hall & Oates and James Taylor, duets with Boyz II Men and Kehlani, and international smash "Attention". Topping it all off is that soothingly supple falsetto, which allows Puth—the ultimate hopeless romantic—to translate anything into love. - Apple Music

I'm really hating the state of the top end of the charts right now, I can't wait until they're pretty much all flushed away (except for Lost Frequencies)

I'm hoping The Joker and the Queen hasn't snuck back into the top 5 today.

Won't it be top 3 if it's been mentioned by Scott as a contender?

Charlie finally sneaking back in!

this is pretty catchy, could be huge with playlist support

Good to see Charlie back in!

Won't it be top 3 if it's been mentioned by Scott as a contender?

Not necessarily (though with physicals added it has a good chance)
