Hello, good evening and welcome to the 1980s edition of that other thread that I did.

I think this is going to be an education to some of us.

Yes it'll certainly be an education for me! I can think of two songs which should feature high up, but I'm less familiar with the 80s EOYs.
Take On Me should do well, Happy Xmas War Is Over maybe in there, and THAT other xmas record clearly at 1. It's the other 49 spots less certain :D

50 - Kylie Minogue - Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi

20th best seller of 1988

Chart Run

11-2-2-2-3-10-21-27-35-48-48-53-66

Kylie spent 14 weeks at number 2 in 1988 spread over her 5 hits, 2 of which made it to number 1.

Perhaps someone could tell us if that is a record for a calendar year.

Enya's Orinoco Flow gets in the way of Kylie's 4th hit ascending to the top for 3 weeks - it was a close run thing in the 3rd week as Kylie closed the gap to fewer than 500 copies.

Despite Enya's three week triumph, Orinoco Flow ended up only 2 places higher in the End of Year Chart of 1988. Kylie managed to maintain higher sales over Enya after both had dropped from their peaks.

49 - Freeez - I.O.U.

20th best seller of 1983

Chart Run

44-23-7-5-3-2-2-2-3-10-16-25-26-41-61

This is a song that I heard only in the last few years as I investigated early 80s house music. Not until I was researching this entry did I realise it was such a big hit.

Paul Simon's Wherever I Lay My Hat prevented I.O.U from being a chart topper.

I had no idea that was such a big hit either. I wish it didn’t say AEIOU as it makes it feel a bit novelty
Kylie's best early pop single from the 80's and IOU got overplayed in the end, though it sounded good at the time. The jazzfunk Southern Freez hit they started with is better.

48 - Yazoo - Only You

19th best seller of 1982

Chart Run

72-48-31-14-7-2-3-4-8-13-21-37-53-70

Yazoo's debut single was stopped in its tracks by 1982's Eurovision winner, Nicole with A Little Peace.

Of course, they still made a packet because it was a 5 week chart topper and Christmas number 1 of 1983 when covered by the Flying Pickets.

47 - Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now

19th best seller of 1987

Chart Run

25-3-3-2-4-6-13-20-33-45-68

And speaking of Eurovision - this was Ireland's 3rd winner and the first of 5 wins during the decade 1987-1996.

It's the official anthem of my vinyl buddies when we meet up to play 80s tunes, once or twice a year. It's liberating to sing this at 3am into a hair brush or bottle of Carlsberg.

Try it!

Whitney's I Wanna Dance With Somebody deprived Johnny of his second number 1 single in the UK/

46 - Liquid Gold - Dance Yourself Dizzy

19th best seller of 1980

73-47-23-14-5-4-2-2-3-8-17-40-54-71

Possibly more fun in 1980 but not much fun now.

Thank the lord for The Jam's Going Underground and Detroit Spinners' Working My Way Back To You, otherwise this would have been a chart topper.

45 - Phil Collins - Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now)

19th best seller of 1984

26-10-4-2-2-2-3-8-10-22-28-39-51-70

In between his albums Hello, I Must Be Going and No Jacket Required, Phil released this huge hit single from the soundtrack of the film of the same name.

Lionel Richie's Hello and Duran Duran's The Reflex made sure it didn't become his second number 1.

44 - New Order - Blue Monday

18th best seller of 1983

Chart Run

37-24-17-14-14-12-13-17-18-26-32-45-51-57-65-62-62-74-79-82-77-78-74-57-60-53-44-37-20-12-10-9-12-15-18-25-38-50-58-65..etc

Ah Blue Monday, let us count the ways we love thee.

Not including the 1988 remix, Blue Monday spent 68 weeks in the UK top 100 in the 1980s.

It stayed on the UK independent chart for 186 weeks.

That's nothing compared to how well it did in New Zealand.

There, it entered the chart at number 3 in May 1983, peaking at number 2 four weeks later, didn't leave the top 20 until the following January, becoming the best selling single of 1983. It didn't leave the top 40 until July 1984.

43 - Madonna - Like A Virgin

18th best seller of 1984

Chart Run

51-36-27-8-5-4-5-4-3-4-7-9-15-23-31-38-53-68

Still at the start of her bourgeoning superstardom, this was her second top 10 hit and the beginning of an unbroken string of 35 top 10 singles that wouldn't end for a decade.

She yoyo-ed around the top 5 beneath two of the biggest selling singles of all time - Do They Know It's Christmas? and a song further up this chart.

42 - Ashford & Simpson - Solid

18th best seller of 1985

Chart Run

75-54-27-13-6-4-3-3-4-6-12-21-32-45-53

So why did I think this was a Tina Turner song until yesterday?

This pair wrote plenty of megahits for Motown but this was their only UK Top 40 single. Kept from the top spot by Paige/Dickson's I Know Him So Well and a song further up this chart.

Johnny Logan singing, I'll take your word for it

Only You a chart-topper for me, Liquid Gold sounded fun at the time, yes good for a cheesy bop. Phil Collins is OK but its no In The Air Tonight. It's not even a You Can't Hurry Love. Blue Monday, I preferred the remix actually and the first time I could buy it - 12" records were too expensive at full price and as it never stopped selling it never went into the bargain bins, so I never bought it (until I got the CD remix and it was on that). Always felt Madonna's Like A Virgin needed a question mark at the end. "Well, I wouldn't mind". Not written by Madonna but a goodie anyway, and produced by Nile Rodgers as everything was in 1984  Solid is pure class from 2 classy songwriters and artists (married).
