16. Coldplay - Yellow 1246pts

Top scores - coi 50, Jester 47, Brer 47

From 2000, Yellow was the second single released from Coldplay's debut album, 'Parachutes'. With the first one only reaching number 35, this was their first big hit single, helping the album to go straight in at number 1.

Two big losses in a row :( One Day Like This is glorious and it was fantastic to see it become a Top 10 hit after the Olympics - I thought it had an outside chance of winning here. Despite everything they've done since, Yellow is still Coldplay's best song for me.

Love this video - always have done - it has always made the song 10 times better for me :o

At best Paparazzi is a pleasant pop song, but for me, not worthy of being in the top 50, let alone top 20 of the ultimate number 4's.... the video saves it for me.

Argh, that's a lot of great ones in that 16-20 section. Got a lot of love for One Day Like This, I'm pleased the Olympics gave it a second lease of life as its 30s peak never reflected its status correctly.

oh thought Yellow could even go all the way, surprised some ranked it so low :/ but guess haters gonna hate :)

Paparazzi is ok, wouldn't place it so high but it's a decent pop song from Gaga when she still could write a good pop song :) sorrynotsorry

never got into Elbow even though I've trie3d, I actually prefer the other single from Seldom seen kid, Grounds for Divorce, much rockier and raw (and better imho)

14. Cutting Crew - (I Just) Died In Your Arms 1250pts

Cutting Crew are really only known for this one song. The follow-up, 'I've Been In Love Before', did reasonably well, managing to be a top 40 hit in 1986 and again in 1987. The group split up in 1993. Lead singer Nick Van Eede reformed Cutting Crew in 2005 with a new line-up of musicians.

Wow Cutting Crew so high

Love the song but surprised people know it

13. Nelly Furtado - All Good Things (Come To An End) 1258pts

Low scores - vibe 1, Mark223 1, jimwatts 4

Average score - 26.8

This was Nelly Furtado's fifth top 5 single and also Europe's second best selling single of 2007. If you thought we had seen the last of Chris Martin, you'd be wrong. As well as co-writing the song, he contributes some vocal harmonies.

From Katy Perry's second album, 'One of the Boys', this was her second top 5 single.

I’m surprised All Good Things ended up with such a high placing. IMO well deserved of course.

I listened to it so much back then and have been again since this rate. I think it’s my favourite Furtado song.

Definitely less impressed with 15-11 so far than I was with 20-16!

And I thought I was in the minority who rates the absolutely gorgeous All Good Things as one of Nelly's best! :o I did like her other songs and image reinvention for this era, but this one is really beautiful and very underrated these days (blame Chris Martin's influence x)

all 4 singles from Loose were 11/10 songs, might be my least favourite out of the 4 but still a great great song

Hot n Cold is pure pop and catchy shouldn't be so high

What You Waiting For? is a great track, I was obsessed with it at the time

Agreed, a real stomper that channels the anxieties of stepping out into the solo spotlight well.

'Paparazzi' really takes me back to the height of my Gaga stanning days <3 I was so fascinated by her music videos as a kid and the song has held up pretty well.

Much love for 'Yellow', 'All Good Things (Come To An End) ', 'One Day Like This' and '(I Just) Died In Your Arms' too.

I wasn't super familiar with the Garbage song but enjoyed it upon re-listening.

11. Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music 1312pts

From 2007, this was Rihanna's sixth top 5 hit. It uses a line from Michael Jackson's song Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' but that line originates from the 1972 song 'Soul Makossa' by the Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango, leading to him to make claims against both Rihanna and Michael Jackson.

10. Tracy Chapman - Fast Car 1320pts

And so Tracy Chapman has the honour of being the highest placed female singer on our countdown. Fast Car was floundering in the lower part of the singles chart in 1988 until she performed the song at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute at Wembley Stadium. It eventually peaked at number 5. It was then a hit again in 2011 after Michael Collings performed his version on Britain's Got Talent, reaching number 4 this time.
