Only You is ok but is so far away from my radar.

So Manic Monday is the biggest Prince related thing here. I'm not surprised! :teresa:

Only You is brilliant, Vince Clarke's synths and Alison Moyet's vocals carry the emotion perfectly.

Manic Monday I can take or leave and the same goes for one song that's left - the other three I didn't vote for are all songs I like.

'Only You' both versions are splendid imo. 'Manic Monday' is great but is not quite as good as 'Walk Like An Egyptian'. I do like their original of 'Eternal Flame' as well!

So no victory for Madonna this time around in one of my rates. This is her most popular 80s No 2 on the forum and also our favourite No 2 of 1986 as the year becomes the first one to exit the rate.

Kim’s first single remains our preferred No 2 of the 80s from her. It’s also our 3rd Favourite No 2 of 1981.

Borderline is a decent pop record but by 1986 she could sell any old piece of tat. Yes I'm looking at you Gambler. It originally peaked at 40-something as follow-up to modest hit Lucky Star. It deserved a bit better than that, but number 2 is a tad more than, say, the much-better Dress You Up got.

Boo! Kim out! When I see her in 3 months I'll take a huge sign letting her know she was voted 17th in Best Number 2's Of The 80's. Cambodia is her best early single though. Chequered Love is fab too.

Not that these things matter at all, obviously, but I make Popchartfreak me on 246 points left now. Breathing down the necks of leaders Colm and Daan who are just ahead as PCF mutters quietly "come on Bonnie, come on M+TM your time is up! Stop hanging around!" :teresa:

'Kids in America' - I heard it in a shop the other week, it is indeed an tune. Not massive on 'Borderline' though.

Kids in America def deserved to be a no1 debut for Kim! Much better than ole Shakeys effort but he had more of a fanbase and she was for the younger buyer at that point of her career with the new wave image!

Not especially. First top 10 single for both acts. Shaky had a wider appeal though getting parents and grandparents on board whilst Kim, I imagine, had a younger pull. My grandmother loved Shaky good bless her!

Kim was big with teens and 20's, Shaky appealed to little kids and grown-ups of more mature vintage. I helped as a dole-claiming free volunteer in a Mansfield youth club at the time and the Big 3 pre-teen acts with da kids were Shaky, Bucks Fizz and Adam & The Ants. :) It took all my cunning to avoid getting dragged onto the dancefloor to do The Birdie Song dance. I hid in the sweet shop when it came on. Those kids are now pushing 50 or early 50's gulp! :o

oh poor Borderline, my entire top 3 is gone now (Live to Tell - Sign your Name - Borderline)

sad to see Manic Monday gone too, that deserved top 10 imho at least it's the best Prince song of the 80s

not crazy about Kids in America, You Keep Me Hanging On is a million times better, wish they switched in here

Yeh that’s kind of what I meant in my inarticulate way 😆

By some stretch our favourite Durannie No 2 of the decade and indeed our 2nd favourite runner up of 1982.

And here’s Fiesta’s 30 pointer which is also the 3rd favourite of 1983, it revisited the top 10 in 1992 in remixed form.

Had to happen at some point, I've now lost 4 in a row including 3 of my top 7. Great to see Save A Prayer as the top Duran Duran song by some stretch. Temptation I first heard in the form of the 1992 remix on that first Now album I bought (Duran Duran's Ordinary World was on that too - I must seek out or make a Spotify playlist of it sometime), the original is obviously best though and it's stuck with me ever since.
