I’ve been listening to Lover a lot again over the last couple of weeks and it has got me thinking about what my ideal single release schedule would have looked like. I mean, when you listen to the album as a whole, it has such depth and those single choices don’t make sense to me at all. My ideal would definitely have been different.

Below are the single releases - with peaks -for each era since the Red era. Apologies if I’ve got the order for Reputation wrong - it’s a bit confusing

Were you happy with the single choices?

Would you have released them in this order?

What would your ideal era have looked like i.e.

Single 1 =

Single 2 =

Single 3 =

Single 4 =

Red:

Single 1 = We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - 4

Single 2 = Begin Again - 30

Single 3 = I Knew You Were Trouble - 2

Single 4 = 22 - 9

Single 5 = Everything Has Changed - 7

Single 6 = Red - 26

Single 7 = The Last Time - 25

1989:

Single 1 = Shake It Off - 2

Single 2 = Blank Space - 4

Single 3 = Style - 21

Single 4 = Bad Blood - 4

Single 5 = Wildest Dreams - 40

Single 6 = Out of The Woods - 136

Single 7 = New Romantics - 132

Reputation:

Single 1 = Look What You Made Me Do - 1

Single 2 = …Ready For It - 7

Single 3 = End Game - 49

Single 4 = Gorgeous - 15

Single 5 = Delicate - 45

Lover:

Single 1 = Me - 3

Single 2 = You Need To Calm Down - 5

Single 3 = Lover - 14

Single 4 = The Man - 21

Folklore:

Single 1 = Cardigan - 6

Evermore:

Single 1 = Willow - 3

The only ones I would change were 'Reputation' & 'Lover', so here goes =

Reputation:
Single 1: Look What You Made Me Do
Single 2: I Did Something Bad
Single 3: Getaway Car
Single 4: Call It What You Want
Single 5: Delicate

Lover:
Single 1: Cruel Summer
Single 2: You Need to Calm Down
Single 3: The Man
Single 4: Lover
Single 5: Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince

the last 4 eras have been so so poorly handled...

Reputation

1 Look what you made me do

2 Delicate

and that's it :D

Lover

1 Cruel summer

2 Lover

3 The man

and that's it :D

for Folklore/Evermore it's crazy they stopped after single 1... Exile and Champagne Problems are Amon Taylor's best ever

Folklore

1 Cardigan

2 Exile

Evermore

1 Willow

2 Champagne problems

Would further singles from Folklore and Evermore have even done anything or outperformed how they did as album tracks anyway? Especially with how difficult it is these days for post-album singles to make any traction.

For Lover I definitely would have had 'Cruel Summer' as the lead single, with 'You Need To Calm Down' as a promo track/video (as it has an important message) and then 'The Man' as the second proper single to launch the album. And 'Lover' at Christmas.

For Reputation 'Getaway Car' not being a single really felt like a waste, but that campaign seemed pretty much dead in the water by the end of the year. For 1989 I would have released the magnificent 'Out Of The Woods' earlier in the campaign as it never really got its moment to shine. :(

I think Champagne Problems could have been huge, in the US it only peaked at #21 on album release week, so sure it could have improved in there

agree on Out of the Woods, could have been single 4 instead of Bad Blood

I think Red was handled fine, I know some people say All Too Well should've been a single but the whole "fan fave album track to #1 across the world years later" narrative is far more interesting imo. Tbh I think the awful single choices in Rep/Lover eras worked out in the long run since it made folklore/evermore feel way more impactful, but there's definitely some things I would've changed.

1989:

Single 1: Shake It Off

Single 2: Blank Space

Single 3: Style

Single 4: Out Of The Woods - honestly I don't think Bad Blood was great for Taylor's public perception, it definitely contributed towards the whole 'snake' thing. OOTW deserved!

Single 5: Wildest Dreams

Single 6: Wonderland - this sounds kinda dated now but I feel it would've worked at the time, and something has to replace OOTW since I moved it up.

Single 7: New Romantics - maybe too similar now to Wonderland, so Single 6 could've also been You Are In Love

Reputation:

Single 1: LWYMMD - works as a big moment, but I would've moved on quickly once it started to die off on the charts.

Single 2: Don't Blame Me - the whole album was seen as being about the media/reputation/celebrity culture, which people weren't here for. A more 'dark side of romance' angle like in this song would've been more effective without actually changing anything about the album

Single 3: I Did Something Bad - thematically quite similar to the previous 2 singles but still sounds pretty big to me

Single 4: Getaway Car - obviously a fan favourite, something different from the rest of the era for the 1989 stans

Single 5: Delicate - worked well enough as a final single and bridges nicely into Lover era

Lover:

I would've moved the whole campaign on by about a month so that Old Town Road wouldn't have been such a threat (then the era could've had 2 US #1s)

Single 1: Cruel Summer - I don't think I have to convince anyone on this x

(YNTCD as a promo single sometime around here since it has an important message)

Single 2: Lover - released late summer, giving it time to build through autumn. Obviously as the title track it works well alongside an album announcement

Single 3: Paper Rings - given how well it's done thanks to TikTok, I think it's fair to say this could've been a hit. It's fun and represents the era pretty well, released alongside the album.

Single 4: Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince - this would've been the promo single for the Miss Americana docu instead of Only The Young. It's got the same optimistic political message, but imo with more hit potential.

There's other songs that could've been singles (Cornelia Street especially) but I would've stopped there to make way for folklore.

folklore:

Single 1: cardigan - my favourite from the album, feels like a good representation of the overall sound

Single 2: exile - it's already turning into the bigger hit so makes sense to get a single push

august could've been pushed too, but I actually wouldn't do that unless it was as a very low-key single. I feel like it works better as a fan favourite and is probably doing better thanks to TikTok than it would've as a post-album single. Plus both folklore and evermore definitely benefit from feeling 'underrated', in the long term they'll be seen more as hidden gems for people to discover.

evermore:

Single 1: willow - the most commercial track for sure

Single 2: champagne problems - not my fave but seems popular so why not!

Single 2: no body, no crime - this wouldn't have been a hit but like irl I would've released it as a country single, at the same time as champagne problems

Again other songs could've been pushed - long story short def could've worked but the era had to end quickly to move onto Fearless TV.

Single 1 = Teardrops on My Guitar

Single 2 = Our Song

Single 3 = Picture to Burn

Single 4 = Should've Said No

Fearless:
