May 10, 20223 yr ECSTATIC Portugal and Lithuania made it. what a pleasant surprise! Let's all cheer for Latvia crashing and burning so that we don't have to hear that ABOMINATION ever again. One of the worst songs in the history of Eurovision :') 9 out of my Top 10 songs made it through with Switzerland being the only exception so all in all pretty fantastic result. Albania making it would've been perfect and I suspect she finished 11th.

May 11, 20223 yr Gutted for Ronela :cry: Ideally Albania and Austria would replace Switzerland and Moldova but overall it’s not a total loss of a result. Semi 2 is going to be a bloodbath however.

May 11, 20223 yr Author Thoughts on the non-qualifiers. Albania To say a couple of weeks ago this was a universally regarded locked qualifier, I'm pretty shocked Ronela has missed out. I wasn't a huge fan of the staging and styling of the performance, it was much better at FiK and suited the song more. It's a cliche for Albania, but reds and blacks would've fit a lot better than the neon pink and blue she went with (like Croatia last year, doesn't bode well for Brooke tomorrow!). The sound of the smoke jets I felt were really loud and off-putting as well, and the recap clip didn't seem to do it any favours. However, she's comfortably second in terms of YouTube views on the official channel (only behind Ukraine) so I think she made it on the televote, the juries must have placed her in the bottom 3. Latvia I thought they had a great performance that felt far more like the start of the show. I think this would've been close, probably Moldova took their place, I was really surprised at how well that looked on screen compared to what most press had been saying. If Latvia and Moldova had been switched in the running order, I think it could've been a different outcome for them. Slovenia Not a shock at all, they did the absolute best they could've done with it. It would've been a DNQ in any spot, but to go before Ukraine was the worst place they could've had. Bulgaria Visually, I think this was one of the best of the night, but good staging will never drag through a terrible song, and this was a terrible song. Croatia Again no shock, it was fine but easily the most forgettable performance of the night for me. Denmark Perhaps the long ballad intro really killed this, going after Portugal and Croatia people took the opportunity to go get a drink/go to the toilet/whatever. I wasn't fussed on having this through, felt a bit too 'BBC playing it safe' and we all know where that gets you. Austria Well we had Gromee, then Darude and now LUM!X, safe to say we won't be seeing any DJs coming through the internal selections for a while now. The vocal was not it, I feel really bad for Pia because she is not a terrible singer, but she had the weight of the world on her ever since that Israel Calling performance. I felt like it really needed dancers as well. Perhaps these DJs need to take a leaf out of Donatan's book and just do the song and leave the stage show up to someone else.

May 11, 20223 yr The problem for me with Switzerland is not the song, but the artist. I don't believe in him, he dosn't come across as genuine. The song is okay I guess. It didn't help him how he acted after he qualified too, during the press conference he gave me bad vibes... like he was acting happy, but was really annoyed and couldn't keep it in.

If we watched the same press conference, I did not get that impression at all. He acknowledged that his song wasn’t popular so they had to elevate it. That seems quite self-aware to me
May 11, 20223 yr I enjoyed Switzerland a lot more than I thought I would, I felt he performed it with emotion and he seemed genuinely shocked, over the moon and emotional when he qualified.
May 11, 20223 yr An interesting trend that seems to have emerged out of the semi is that "De Diepte" is the song appearing in the most download charts on ESCTracker and actually has a higher YT viewcount than Norway. Maybe this suggests that the Dutch did better on the televote than many of us expected?
