When Austin Post uploaded “White Iverson” to social media in early 2015, he was 19, scrounging for ramen and sleeping in a friend’s closet. Plenty has changed, but Post’s appeal is more or less the same. No matter how Platinum the records go, he still has the air of an ordinary guy, a Crocs-and-Bud Light kid from the suburbs who stumbled backward into fame just by strumming what was in his heart. Post didn’t just look beyond genre, he broke it down, mixing the dark grandeur of trap with the anthemic release of classic rock and country. His signature tracks—“rockstar”, “Sunflower”, “Congratulations”—were both bleak and beautiful, spaced-out and mainstream, hip-hop but not quite. The bass boomed, the melodies soared, and there was Post in the middle, rap-singing his woes like a lonely prince self-exiled in the castle. At live shows, there were no dancers, no pyrotechnics, just Post, in a baggy football jersey with a cigarette in his hand, bringing 60,000 people into his bedroom: The pop star as moody teen.

 

Born in 1995 in Syracuse, New York, and raised in the suburbs of Dallas, Post grew up on a mix of country, classic rock and rap: In one well-circulated anecdote, young Post would get called into the living room to entertain Dad and friends with the dance to Terror Squad’s “Lean Back”. Goodbyes is my favourite Posty song, that one's soooo underrated!

 

Cooped Up is decent, I don't have particularly strong feelings on it. One Right Now is marginally better and I definitely preferred the other two we've heard today (plus the other song I've heard from the album, the Laroi collab unsurprisingly)

There’s a good anecdote that Future recounted in an interview—about getting into an argument with a guy who was worried about one of the Atlanta rapper’s engineers. The engineer hadn’t left the studio in a week. Had he even eaten? Don’t worry, Future said—he himself hadn’t left in a week, either, and someone was bringing in Wendy’s from up the block. Barely a season goes by without new music from the rapper born Nayvadius Wilburn (in 1983)—whether it’s a mixtape, solo album, or collaborative project (with Drake, with Gucci Mane, with the producer Zaytoven). When Duke Dumont topped the UK charts with his single “I Got U” in 2014, many listeners may have assumed that featured artist Jax Jones was the singer. In fact, Jones (born Timucin Aluo in 1987) was a co-writer and producer on the song, and its No. 1 position marked his auspicious debut. Raised in London by a Turkish father, a Malaysian mother and a Nigerian stepfather, the Apple Music Up Next alum grew up on a mix of American hip-hop, UK dance and African music, which might help to explain the mix of styles that swirls through his own tracks: His youthful fondness for Prince shows through in funk-infused cuts like 2015’s “Ocean Drive”, while Afro-Caribbean accents bubble up in 2018’s “Ring Ring”, a lilting tropical-house collaboration with Mabel and Rich the Kid.
